If you haven't heard, the em dash has been getting a lot of attention lately…

Because it was trained on pirated work—including freely accessible online writing (like fanfic, academic texts)—ChatGPT picked up patterns and quirks native to human writing.

Including (sigh) the em dash.

There are other victims here (RIP tapestry and delve 🫠), but the appropriation of the em dash—a punctuation mark beloved by writers everywhere—feels especially personal.

A kind of low-grade panic is ensuing. Writers who once memed their own em dash overuse—the greatest punctuation mark ever to grace the control-freak’s lexicon, frankly—are suddenly backing away to avoid accusations.

No. More. We have centuries of dash-abusing writers behind us. We will not sit quietly while AI repurposes our beloved stilted aside—or the just-one-more clarification the sentence demands—or the dramatic pause your comma could never—etc.

You don’t write like AI—AI writes like you.

Defend the em dash.

i have no idea what will happen to me. more than likely i will leave the company i work for bc the pay fucking sucks and i was only staying bc i love the guy i scribe for. idk if they'll replace him but tbh i don't want to have to re-train under a new doctor.

i cant really talk abt it too much bc it'll make me cry again and i've already cried enough today. i just wasn't really expecting to find out i have to start looking for jobs again. i wish i knew what the guy's plans are beyond him opening his own practice.

anyways, uh. I actually still work for the same guy, I ended up leaving my old job after he offered me a position (with better pay and hours!). It's been almost 1 year since I started working for him, I think I'm at... roughly 10 months now.

I do miss everyone from the old place, and I felt really bad leaving the doctor I was training under on such short notice, but I think it was the best choice for me long-term.

i know, i didn't do the starters like i said i would. and i'm sorry. believe me, i feel like a failure. but things have changed since then.

tldr: migraines. and the whole Situation. the whole thing's left a bad taste in my mouth. i'm willing to answer asks still but i don't think i can handle actual threads right now.

for one, migraines. i've already bitched enough about them on here and i'm sure y'all are sick of it so i'm not gonna get into it. it's been really bad again because of the weird weather.

for two, the uh... Situation. i'm not going to make any rash decisions until we get an official statement, but it's really soured my attitude towards barnaby and, by extension, to baron. the fandom as a whole, tbh. don't bother trying to convince me otherwise right now, i'm not in the mood. i'm going to turn off reblogs on this post because i don't want people spreading it around and trying to put words in my mouth. i didn't even really want to make a post about it but considering it's part of the reason for my absence i felt like i had to mention it.

it's been almost a year now since i've really had a consistent muse for baron. i'm sorry. i was feeling a lot better when i made that starter call, and i feel terrible.

i don't plan on deleting. at least, i don't think i do. maybe the bad taste will go away with time. worst comes to worst, i'll either archive this blog or maybe convert it to a different character. but for now, consider this a semi-hiatus. i'll answer asks but i don't think i want any actual threads right now. i hope you can understand.
