“Carving this piece was an experience that really stood out in my mind because it’s one of the few times that the inspiration seemed ‘unearthly.’ This particular tooth had a twist that already gave it a sense of liveliness and so the form quite literally showed itself to me – all I had to do was look at it long enough and it became clear that the carving was going to become a raven. I roughed out a raven form and then took a time-break. The area around the raven’s feet was left very rough and undefined. When I came back, I could then see room for a fish poking through the raven’s feet. The whole experience was as magical as it gets and the rest of the carving process went just as smoothly as the beginning!

I think the carving relates to the story of how Raven tricked Beaver and freed the salmon, but since the whole carving process seemed to be already pre-determined by something else other than myself, I can’t help but notice its mischievous look and wonder if that’s actually the case.”
