i havent posted in months but i will be getting on my soap box cause ive been watching eps for no reason and #thinking about #them and i find bunny so appealing because they exist to me as some kind of intense thought experiment where their relationship is mostly crowd sourced from fanon but its like interesting to try and make them work considering what little content they have in canon and i get to toe the line between those two while also adding my own headcanons of making Kenny a mostly normal guy and Butters a little sick and twisted in the head and it all comes together in this really satisfying way where i feel like i am solving the worlds craziest puzzle which is what i love about making fanwork. and i like it cause its, like i said, crowd-sourced mainly but also inconsistent sitcom logic in canon so you can get loosey goosey as fuck as long as you keep your hands and feet inside the vehicle. matt and trey i am putting two of your characters in yaoi situations you could never imagine. i am manipulating their sordid dynamic in Going Native like a brain surgeon handles the delicate process of repairing gray matter. i am writing fic that is completely committed both to your source material and the hearts and minds of the fujoshi population on tumblr dot com. because they are equally important when facing this pairing head on.

I could talk for hours about how early SP fandom days basically curated a cultural canon that, when engaging with fanwork, can often feel more "canon" than basing off of actual source material just due to how entrenched it is, but I find it really extra interesting how open-ended bunny is when taking into account exclusively source material.

It's like: they basically aren't friends. Kenny takes time to invite Butters to hangouts. He thinks he's a pain. They're business partners and the only two from the main group who kept in contact post-Covid. Kenny shot out his eye and didn't care. "Kenny's the only kid in school I actually like" "I'm not his best friend". They play super heroes together. They're besties. They may as well have never interacted. Everything that makes a sitcom work-- how it all resets and characters are malleable just enough to keep the plot moving, is the same thing that makes them work. Especially as two characters who function almost exclusively as plot devices. It makes them both versatile and extremely difficult to see getting together compared to almost every other pairing. That's why I like them. Because they are a challenging pairing to write and portray, but with a really rewarding goal-post if you get it right.

To put it simply, there are almost no avenues in which I could see them get together. Which is why finding the very few where they do is so compelling. Also they are WEIRD. Which is like candy for me.
