Scout made a wish for herself before looking at Mason with a grin as she watched him think about his wish. When he nodded, she looked back at the sky, her grin turning into a small smile. “What did you wish for?”

Biting his lip, Mason sighed and leaned back a little more. He laughed at her words, glancing back at her, “If I tell you, it won’t come true...” He told her, playfully rolling his eyes at her and lifting his eyes back to the stars. He had wished for them all to have better lives this year.

Scout shuffled over a bit, getting a little closer to Mason as the two of them settled down. She stayed quiet for a little while, just watching the stars as more of them started to come out. “Oh, there’s a shooting star,” she said suddenly, pointing to a spot in the sky where one had been just a moment earlier. “Gotta make a wish.”

Smiling as she shuffled closer, he put his arms behind him and leaned back onto his hands. His eyes stayed focused on the stars, a small smile permanent on his lips for a while. Her sudden speech made him jump a little, before his eyes followed where her finger pointed, “A wish? I don’t know what to wish for. What should I wish for? Oh-” He bit his lip, thinking his wish for a moment, before nodding to himself in satisfaction.

“I sure hope so,” Scout replied, spreading out her blankets and setting her pillows down where she wanted them. “Imagine if it started raining,” she laughed, laying down and wrapping one of the blankets around her. “You can see way more stars here than you can in the city,” she said after a moment, her eyes now fixed on the sky above them.

Plopping down onto his blanket arrangement, He crossed his legs and laid a blanket over them, glancing at her. An amused smile warmed his expression at her words, “That would suck. I hate rain at the best of times.” He couldn’t help the soft chuckle that slipped his lips, before he turned his eyes to the sky too. There was already a few stars twinkling.

When they came up to the spot, Scout couldn’t help but smile. It was exactly how she had remembered it being the last time she was there. “We’re here,” she repeated with a nod, undoing her seatbelt and getting out of the car. She then went into the back seat and pulled out the blankets and pillows she had brought with her, setting them down on the ground near the car.

With her confirmation, Mason turned off the engine and pulled the handbrake up. It seemed like a nice place. Spacious, free. He smiled and unclipped his own seatbelt, popping the trunk before he got out. He grabbed the few blankets he had picked up and the small bag of snacks he had also snatched up enroute out of the house. He joined her. “Apparenlty it’s supposed to be a clear night,” he mentioned as he rolled out his own blankets.

“If your car gets dirty, I promise I’ll wash it for you,” Scout replied with a laugh. She kept a close eye out for the last turn they needed to make in order to get to the spot she wanted. “Oh, right there,” she said suddenly, pointing ahead. “See that? Just turn right there and we should be at the spot.”

Mason laughed, “I’ll hold you to that.” He told her, amused at the idea. The others rarely offered to clean his car when they got it dirty, but it was a nice thought. He kind of liked cleaning his car. It was relaxing and it gave him chance to get out of his hectic household. ”Alright,” he murmured in response, spinning the wheel where she told him to turn and driving up the rad a little further until he came to a stop. “We’re here?”

“Thanks for doing this with me,” Scout said after a long silence, glancing over at Mason. She was glad there was someone in the group who was able to appreciate some of the things she liked, and liked to do. Scout knew she was different from the other, but it was nice to know that there was at least one person She could do things she wanted to do with. “It’s just right up here.” she pointed to a dirt road, which was beginning of the path they needed to take to get to their spot. “Don’t worry, the road isn’t as bad as it looks.”

A soft shrug followed Scout’s words, “I don’t mind,” he told her honestly. It was nice to spend time with her. She was as much part of their group as anyone else.They were a lot more alike that he was sure she thought she was. He liked her though. She was so normal in comparison to their counterparts. A breath of fresh air that they needed. He nodded at her directions when she told him where he needed to go, turning up onto the dirt track and silently hoping that not too much mud would get on his paintwork. He was a little bit of a car freak like that. “I hope you’re right. “ He chuckled, flashing her another smile before  slowing down over a particularly bumpy section of the track.

“I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic, or not,” Scout chuckled, nodding her head. “But yes, I’d have to agree.” Reading one of the signs as they drove, the blonde saw that their exit was coming up. “Okay, so you’re gonna wanna take the next exit and then make a left at the intersection, and then just go straight until we get to the park.”

“I’m not being sarcastic,” Mason assured her, glancing at her with a small smile. He knew he could sound a little disinterested sometimes, but that was just the tone of his vice. He was interested and excited in seeing the stars, he just didn’t express it with the same enthusiasm as Hailey or Dec usually would. He was much more calm. Listening to her directions, he nodded, “Alright,” before swinging the steering wheel to take the next exit, following the instructions she laid out for him as they continued their journey.

Scout nodded her head and reached her hand down to grab some of the CDs and look through them to see if she could find anything she’d want to listen to. There was a lot of music, but nothing she particularly cared for at the moment. Setting the CD’s back down, she reached for the radio and flipped through the stations, eventually settling on one of the okay top 40 stations. “Are you excited?” She asked after a moment, looking over at Mason with a small smile. “Because I’m excited.”

Mason was happy for her to rummage through the CDs in his door pockets or to flick through the radio to her heart’s content. He had always been accepting of most music and so he didn’t mind what played through his speakers, so long as it didn’t give him a headache. He glanced at her when she spoke and he shrugged, “It is a little exciting. Seeing the stars.” He agreed, returning her smile and turning his eyes back to the road. “They’re all kinds of beautiful and they’re so different. They’re really interesting, don’t you think?”

Haze groaned at this, surely it could’ve been more creative… But hey, Scout got to drink and so she went with it. Taking a much larger swig of her drink, wanting to feel the blurry happy feeling hit her, she smirked a little. “I have no regrets. Sometimes it feels uncomfortable but you look damn fine, that’s all I’m saying.” Hailey laughed at Mason’s suggestive eyebrow-wiggling. Adjusting her body so she could lean down and look him dead in the eye, she said. “Who says I’m not right now?” She then moved back so she was facing Scout once more. “And Dec, you can’t say you’ve surely not EVER enjoyed wearing female undergarments.”

“To you,” he pointed to Scout and grinned, wiggling his eyebrows playfully, “Of course I’ve worn girl’s undies, but as I have to say to THIS ONE over here,” He  twisted to throw an accusatory glare at Hailey, “Girl’s underwear is the most uncomfortable thing i’ve ever worn in my life. It’s all constricting and I can never get it to stop riding up my ass honestly. I don’t know why anyone would want to wear undies like that - Personally, I’d rather take Mace’s suggestion and go commando. I mean really, where are the complaints? The boys get to swing free, and one less layer to remove when I want to get busy.”

Scout laughed a little, rolling her eyes at Declan’s comment. “I personally have never had any problems with wearing girl’s underwear, so I’m sorry you find it so unpleasant,” she teased.”Uhh… okay, is it my turn now?” She asked, though she was already thinking of what to say. “Hmm… Never have I ever… had sex in a public place.”

“Maybe if you didn’t have such a big ass,” Mason teased back, the alcohol slightly warming his humour as he flashed a wink at the other boy. His nose crinkled at Dec’s analogy however, making him regret suggesting going commando. He nodded at Scout’s question, smiling at her. A sound of amusement followed from his lips, “Does the bathroom in a supermarket count...?” He questioned, playing with his bottle in his hands.

Watching as he pulled up in front of her house, Scout smiled when he called to her and she stood up, quickly making her way to Mason’s car. She went over to the passenger’s side and hopped in. “Hey,” she greeted him, tossing the blankets in the back seat. “Okay so basically, you just want to get onto the highway and just head north out of town. I’ll tell you what exit to take when we get there.”

When Scout hopped in, Mason simply smiled in response and waited for her to buckle up before he began to drive in the direction she mentioned. “Okay, great.” He mumbled, nodding and checking the signs as they drove. “Um- You can fiddle with the radio if you want. And there are some CDs down the side of the door if you wanted to listen to some of those.” He told her, not wanting to force her into sitting into silence the whole journey. Mainly because he wasn’t very good at talking and driving at the same time. “I- There’s some of Dec’s and Hailey’s music down there too. But if you want me to pick you up some discs in the future-” He murmured, shrugging. He listened to pretty much all kinds of music, so he didn’t mind having his music taste overtaken by his friends.

After leaving Mason, Scout went back home and spent a miserable evening with her parents. She found herself looking at the clock more often than not, waiting patiently for 9 o’clock to roll around. When the time finally came, the blonde wasted no time in bundling up, and grabbing a couple blankets to take with them. Stepping outside, Scout sat on her front steps looking down the street to see if she could spot Mason.

Mason had walked home, changed out of his jeans into some sweatpants. He wasn’t going to wear jeans, not if he was just going to be lying about watching stars. Mainly because he liked wearing tight jeans. His parents had stopped yelling when he got home,so he told them when he was leaving this time around, picking up his car keys when it came to 9 o’clock and throwing some snacks and a jacket into his cr, before he slipped into this seat. Driving to Scout’s house, struggling to remember where it was for a moent, he pulled up outside it, giving her a half-smile when he saw her at thefront steps. “Hey,” he called to her, winding down the window, “Wanna jump in?”

Brushing his lips with his tongue, Mason too turned his gaze to the sky once their conversation had bubbled down to a casual silence. His eyes shifted back to her at the question and he smiled, “Sure.” He agreed, “I’m not busy. I wouldn’t be here if I was. and it’ll give me some more time from home.” He agreed, nodding. “I’ll probably need to go home to tpick up some stuff, but I’d be down for star gazing if you wanted to.”

Scout smiled and nodded her head. “It’s better to go when it’s later, anyway. Wanna pick me up around nine-ish?” She asked as she stood up, brushing off her jeans.

"Okay, sure." Mason agreed with a smile. Watching her stand up, he pulled himself up too and nodded, "I'll see you at nine then." He promised her, playfully flash in her a wink as he dusted off his own jeans.

Scout laughed with Mason, her gaze once again drifting to the sky. She noticed the colours starting to change ever so slightly, telling her the sun was starting to set. “Hey, do you wanna go star-gazing tonight?” She asked after a moment, looking over at him. “I mean, we don’t have to, but if you’re not busy…”

Brushing his lips with his tongue, Mason too turned his gaze to the sky once their conversation had bubbled down to a casual silence. Scout smiled at Mason’s words, nodding her head. “Okay, but if I show you those pictures, you have to promise not to tell anyone. Especially Dec. He’d probably bug me about it forever if he found out I was in a marching band.”

Mason laughed, “I promise I won’t tell anyone, especially Dec. He has plenty of dirt on me for you to get pay back if you wanted. So I won’t tell him.” He confessed, amused, “He probably would. He’s a little shite.”

The crease between her brows only deepened as he said this. Why was he being nice to her? It was so odd to have guys be nice to her, properly nice. Why was Mason? She knew he was a nice person, but she’d come to the natural conclusion that people were meant to be mean to her. “That’s a shame. I’m meant to be good at looking sexy.” She would have added it was the only thing she was good at had she not then been distracted by a very bright postbox they drove past. “You should tell me. No one nice deserves to be lonely.” She liked it when he smiled. Haze always thought it suited him far more than when his face didn’t know what to do, how to work, how to react. She kept tugging him till they came to a stop, and she pushed the button of her seat belt as if she was about to climb out, but instead she leaned forward to cradle his face in her hands. Her touch was so light that it was barely the tips of her fingers holding him, but she didn’t want to break him. The concern he had for her only made him look more… Fragile. And they were both so easily hurt, spun into a spiral of self loathing till the other pulled them out again. And then she pressed her lips to his and it was like she was saying sorry for it. Sorry for you having to drag me from the party. Sorry for being a wreck. Sorry for being an addict. Sorry for existing because that in itself fucked your life up, didn’t it? And she just held him as she apologized in the only way she knew how - her body.

Eye rolling was the only thing he was able to do. He daren’t make a comment, in fear of insulting her or making the situation all the more complicated. What he didn’t understand was why she was so worried about what he thought. His opinions didn’t matter. And he didn’t understand why she was so fantasies with being sexy and attractive. Sure, he could’ve blamed her drunken state for that - but he knew that wouldn’t be the truth. She had always been like this since he had known her. Yet, he still felt like he couldn’t abandon her. He would never dare imagine doing such a thing. He wanted to protect her. “I promise I’ll tell you,” he told her, offering her a half-smile that crinkled his eye into a slight wink. When he stopped the car, he was surprised to see her unbelting herself - before assuming that she needed to throw up or something. Even drunk she had always been good enough not to ruin the interior of his car. A spark of surprise lit up his whole face when he felt her feathery touch on his face. He blinked slowly. So delicate and gentle. She was so precious and treated him so preciously. His eyes seeked an answer from hers for a moment, curiousity and slight nerves aglow in his blue hues. No surprise followed when her lips pressed to his except his own internal surprise of him reciprocating the gentle kiss, his hand slipping up gently to cup her cheek, fingers delicately weaving into her hair. His lip movements whispered the promise that he didn’t care what she did, that he’d always forgive her no matter what. He’d always forgive her.

Scout nodded her head. “Yeah, I guess so. It just sucks because sometimes I feel like I disappointed my parents, you know? They really wanted me to join the military, but I was just never into it… I mean, I guess it’s an alright fall back, if nothing else,” she chuckled. “I can show you pictures one day. I have plenty of those.”

Mason gave her another nod of understanding, “You’re talking to the king of disappointments, soI get that. But, I doubt they’re disappinted. As long as you tried your best that’s all they can ask of you, right?” He shrugged, “I know that’s easy to say, but as long as you’re proud of yourself- who cares?” He laughed, “You have to. I wanna see this.”

“Partly, yeah. I also just really hated military school,” Scout laughed lightly. “I suffered through it, but it just wasn’t for me.” She shrugged. She only went to military school at all because it was expected of her, but it was just never something she found herself enjoying. With a chuckle, she nudged Mason, rolling her eyes. “Oh yeah, I was adorable.”

Another nod followed, this time of understanding. It sucked to not be able to do the things you wanted to do, “Hey, at least you got out though?” He responded, with a small smile. It was good to look at the positives from time to time,even if he never followed that perspective on his own life. That was something he kept to himself, however. He laughed at her comment, a grin on his lips, “I bet ou were. Did you have one of those tall hats too? I bet you were the bee’s knees.”
