LPS / SPS Interceptor Treatment - Red, Black, Invisible Bugs
I recently encountered a possible attack by black/invisible bugs at that are known to hitchhike via Aussie LPS (mostly chalices & acans) & quickly destroy LPS! It starts with one coral melting and very soon you’ll see many others joining the race to death!
I had a similar issue last year and pretty much tried every possible fix but failed and lost almost all LPS in my tank.
Ok to the treatment now… this is exactly the same procedure to treat Red Bugs on SPS if you have them.
I found a local reefer who was very generous to give me a few tabs of the Interceptor Spectrum (Tasty Chews) for Small Dogs. The most common ones are the large ones which are white & for large dogs.
The big ones have 23mg of Milbemycin oxime + 228mg of Praziquantel & is good to great 380gals of water. The green one I got came with 5.75mg of Milbemycin oxime good for 95gal.
I split the tablet in half which will make it good for 47gals (my entire water volume). Made it to a nice power by just jamming it with a spoon.
Next I heated 200ml of RODI water in the microwave for 90sec and added the powder to the water & stirred well. Powdering & hot water are important for the chewy tab to dissolve well.
Keep stirring and let the water cool and you’ll have something like this. Try to get this back to your tank temp.
Now to the most important part…
Inverts: Removing crabs is a must. Snails are optional (some have had luck with snails, some have lost them but I removed the big ones. Also left my long spine urchin in the DT
Skimmer: Turn off your skimmer for the 6hr period
Filter Media: Remove all GAC, GFO, Phosguard, Purigen, etc. for the 6hr period.
Finally poured the interceptor solution (11:30pm) over the powerhead so it stirs well & let it do its job for the next 6-7hrs. Make sure you have fresh saltwater mixed and ready to go (30-50% of your water volume).
Woke up next morning (after 6hrs), everything looked good… fishes, coral (no RTNs), my long spine urchin, small snails, etc. were all alive and happy. Went ahead and did the first 35% water change, got the skimmer & GFO reactor running again, added 2x new GAC.
Later that day I did a second 35% PWC and added the snails & crabs back to the DT. Its been a week now and every coral looks healthy... no more melting! I’m so happy I did this and going to advise this treatment to anyone as a last resort if they can’t get their LPS to stop dying.
The Apex Controller
After reef keeping for 1.5yrs I finally decided to pull the trigger on getting the Apex Controller. Last week I ordered from BRS the Apex Controller with Lab-grade pH probe, the Mag Probe Holder & the IO Breakout Box.
I purchased new Madison float switches from Jon and being inspired by his Apex setup, I decided to replicate the float sensors... I looked around a lot to get the right bracket to hold these switches but there was none to hold 4 switches.
I took measurements and I ended up 3D printing the bracket. This one below was my first prototype... I didn’t get the levels right, also wire placement was not great.
I redesigned the model with the adjusted levels and also make sure I had holes for the wires so its more organized. Also used XT-CLEAR material this time with higher quality print.
I also got a 7 Positons Ground Wire Row from Jon to connect all the grounding wires from the switches then into the grounding port in the IO box, that way if any switch fails I can individually disconnect & replace them (instead of taking down all switches). The ATO in the back will be gone soon!
For a whole week I kept messaging Jon day/night asking all sorts of questions around configs and programming... messaging was not enough so we ended up using Google Hangouts!! I really want to thank Jon for all the advise :)
My Apex config is not very sophisticated but I got most of my automation needs covered.
The probes are sitting very close to the dosing tubes which is why you’ll see some spikes in pH. They’re sitting in the skimmer chamber that has variable water levels but I’ve placed them such that the pH probe is never completely submersed.
Need something hotter than this?! Cornbred Flaming Bugatti Rainbow Chalice... got it from Reef-A-Palooza :)

LPS Melting Again!!
Just got back from Reef-A-Palooza and noticed my acan echinata receded 80% and 2 other chalices are starting to recede... This feels exactly what I went though the last time I lost almost every LPS (randomly melting). I did more reading and several threads say there could be either black bugs or bacterial infection from wild caught coral (I got 2 wild caught chalices in the last few weeks) and the only thing that helped bring the coral back to life was an interceptor dip.
Yesterday when I went back home things were kinda the same, nothing receded further so I did a 5gal PWC (10%), dipped the 2 chalices and the echinata in Bayer for 10min & Iodine for 4min and placed them back in the tank hoping things would get better, everything else in the system looked good. I also did some tests... Ph 8.2 Sal 1.026 Alk 8.8 Cal 450 Mag 1480 Nitr 0 Phos 0.06 My GFO reactor pump stopped working so I thought it could be a Phos spike but its not! Today morning (2 hrs ago) I checked the chalices & echinata and they looked the same... but then I noticed this favia frag which was happy & puffed up just yesterday night now started receding, this one is not from the base tho! In just in 8hrs!!
Now I decided to just go with the interceptor dose and not loose any more! Thanks to @RavenSF, he gave me a few interceptor tabs yesterday & we had a good chat
After reading around a lot, here's what I'm planning to do...
Large tab has 23mg of Milbemycin oxime & is good for 380gal... The one I got is Green which has 5.75mg of Milbemycin oxime good for 95gal.
I'm planning to cut the tab in half (good for 47gal which is my total water volume), powder it, mix well in 100ml of hot RODI and let it cool
Remove GAC, turn off skimmer and dose into the powerhead at 12am tonight
Meanwhile I'm mixing 15gal of salt water
Wake up at 6am, do the 15gal (30% PWC), turn on skimmer and add a double dose of GAC
I'll mix 15gal again in the morning and in the evening around 8pm do another 30% PWC
This is another 2 headed wormy hitchhiker thing I found is a Spionid/Chaetopterid worm. Safe!
Found this guy in my fuge thinking he’s a hitchhiker but looks like he’s a Stomatella Snail and a good algae grazer :)
True beauty! The Rainbow Chalice I won at the frag swap :)
After lights went off, found this one (about 5mm) on the glass moving slowly. Immediately sucked it out with a syringe and put it on a black surface with a few drops of water... it started moving around like crazy & fast...
