Inschrijven op de 82% nieuwsbrief kan hier. Ze komen niet elke keer online dus als je wilt dat je ze ziet is inschrijven best een goed idee.

You Are Not So Smart is een podcast over 'self-delusions'. We houden onszelf constant voor de gek en dat levert interessante onderwerpen op. Een van mijn favoriete afleveringen is 32. Seeing willpower as powered by a battery that must be recharged. Naast dat het een heel goed geproduceerde en interessante podcast is maakt de host, echt heel gek maar waar, een koekje naar een recept van een luisteraar en eet die op om vervolgens direct te vertellen hoe het koekje smaakt. Smaakt altijd fantastisch, dat wel. Alle recepten zijn op Pinterest te vinden.

In december komt de nieuwe Star Wars film uit dus je hebt genoeg tijd om deze Wookie Hoodie te bestellen. Waar wacht je nog op?

Om tot een uniforme 'brand identity' te komen moet een hoop werk worden verzet. Dat wordt wel duidelijk uit het portfolio-item Facebook Visual Identity waarin Ben Barry beschrijft hoe hij de visuele Facebook identiteit helemaal heeft opgeschoond en rechtgetrokken tussen 2012 en 2013. Zo is er onder andere een intern Brand Resource Center gekomen en is er het publieke facebookbrand.com.

Mocht je nog een hacker zoeken voor het een of het ander dan kun je bij Hackers List terecht. Wil je het e-mailadres van je overbuurman hacken dan is dat volgens de FAQ echter een no-go: "Hackers List is intended for legal and ethical use". Bummer.

Als je van plan bent een kaartspelletje te programmeren (ik zou graag een keer 51'en willen programmeren) dan scheelt deze API je een hoop werk: Deck of Cards. De API geeft je een geschud kaartspel waar je vervolgens kaarten uit kan trekken. De logica voor de kaarten moet je vervolgens wel zelf programmeren maar als je het project forked kun je het direct in de API bouwen.

Blijkbaar is het Microsoft toch weer gelukt om 6(!) verschillende versies van Windows 10 te maken. Wie had dat gedacht?

A few years ago, the CEO of Vertu was showing me the company’s newest $8,000 phone, bragging that the gadget was far more substantial and well-made that any $500 iPhone could hope to be. I stopped him short, pointing out that the iPhone isn’t a $500 gadget. It’s a $1 billion gadget. After all, how many billions has it cost in R&D, to develop all the gobsmacking manufacturing techniques, all the software tricks, the App Store, and all the battery tech inside? The reason it costs so much less than a Vertu isn’t because it’s less well made. It’s because 700 million people have helped amortize Apple’s investment in it.

Apple now seems hell bent on finding new ways to flex that muscle.

This is exactly right. Luxury brands look at Apple and see a low sticker price. What they miss is the billions in R&D spending behind the sticker — and the hundreds of millions of units shipped that feed this machine and allow for the sticker price to remain so low. 

They don’t think Apple is a competitor because people pay more for luxury. For some people, that’s sort of true — though it’s more paying for a brand or lifestyle. But most people are content to pay for quality. And Apple often tops the luxury brands in this regard. Which is problematic for them, to say the least.

My favorite story of Jonny Ive happened in the summer of 2008. At the time I was in the student internship program at Apple, and as part of the program each of the executives at Apple would sit down in Town Hall for a chat with that year's group of interns. Some of the executives would come with a slide deck briefly explaining what they did, something about the company, etc. Johnny just came in, sat on a stool in the middle of the stage, said "What would you like to know?", and started taking questions. About 20 minutes in to the conversation, one student asked him: "Why are so many of Apple's products white?" I think all of us expected some long explication of the clean and unassuming quality of white as a color. Instead, Johnny closed his eyes, took a breath, and said (as best as I can recall), "Imagine something that doesn't exist. Imagine something completely new. A new shape. A new device..." After a beat he continued, "Can you imagine something like that?" At this point he was obviously doing the very thing he was suggesting we all try. Then he opened his eyes and plainly said, "Well...when I do they're always white!" Then he laughed like a little kid and said, "I guess that sounds pretty ridiculous, huh?" and moved on to the next question...
