ACTIVITY ON RAISING AWARENESS

Objective: To raise awareness on refugees and gain knowledge on the ongoing crisis in their country.

Materials: - Paper - Pencil Crayons - Ipad (Provided)

Procedure: Step 1- Students must be placed in 4 different groups. Each group will be given a country.

Step 2- On the ipad provided, they are to search the flag of the country and draw it on the paper.

Step 3- Students are to research the crisis that are happening in the country and discuss them in the group. They will present!

Step 4- They are to prepare a 2-min presentation that discusses the current events within their given country and also explain: (1) Why you think they left the country, (2) How hard you think adjusting to a new country is, (3) How their lives differ from yours, (4) What you take for advantage.

The Obama administration rang in the New Year with a wave of terror against undocumented workers, particularly Central Americans. In an unprecedented act, the raids particularly targeted children, the first in this country to target minors.

President Obama has carried out more deportations than any other U.S. president. Since his election, over 2 million workers have been deported.

The targeting of migrants from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala in the New Year’s raids is especially unconscionable, as well as racist and criminal, because of the conditions the youth, children and families are being deported back to.

Decades of imperialist intervention in Central America have created unstable social conditions. The so-called U.S. war on drugs served not to stop illegal drugs but to build and expand the drug industry, including the cartels.

This lucrative industry for the banks and the entire drug business means that drugs won’t be stopped until the movement for justice stops them. In the meantime, drug violence soars in Central America and Mexico so the business can carry on.

Central American youth in particular are being returned to their deaths. Many of the migrant families report that they fled Honduras or El Salvador only after family members had already been targeted and often killed by drug lords. Families are fleeing for their lives. One migrant mother told a member of Congress that she could live in poverty but she could not live under conditions of war.

In 2014, more than 100,000 working-class people came across the border fleeing these conditions. Thousands were unaccompanied minors. Young people recounted how they were pressured to “join or die” the so-called gangs.

“My dad brought me to a refugee shelter to drop off the clothes I collected for them. Because my mum is from Syria and my dad is from Iraq I could talk to the children in the shelter. In the beginning they didn’t trust me. When I asked them why they said it’s because they have been lied to too many times. For Pope Francis, our priests, religious and missionaries, that they may continue to lead, guide and support the concern of the Church towards immigrants and vulnerable populations. We pray to the Lord.

For unaccompanied migrant children, that they may be protected from harm and reunited with loving families. We pray to the Lord.

For an end to human trafficking, that the dignity of all of God’s children will be protected. We pray to the Lord.

For all of us gathered here today to pray for our sisters and brothers on the move that we may learn to recognize Jesus in the migrants who come to our land and welcome them in His name. We pray to the Lord.

For migrants, refugees and those in immigration centres, for seafarers and all people on the move, especially the poorest and most rejected ones; may they find compassion and help in our community. We pray to the Lord.

Joshua 20:1-6
