Cambuskenneth Abbey Bell Tower.

Cambuskenneth Abbey was founded in about 1140 by King David I to serve Stirling Castle, which stands a short distance to the west.

As I pointed out yesterday, this is sucha historic gem of a site to visit, as well as the links to Sir William Wallace and King James III, King Robert the Bruce held parliaments here twice, in 1314, and 1326. The Bell Tower is unique in Scotland. It’s an excellent example of 1200s architecture, with good lancet windows and ornamental arcades.

It's an easy walk from Srirling train station and well worth a visit.

Pics from July 17th 2018. This is a really interesting site with some fantastic history.

The Abbey, of which only the Bell Tower remains in full. dates back to at least the 12th century. I will post more of the Abbey later, but the real history, and legend is in the grounds.

The tomb you see in the foreground of the first pic is that of King James III and his wife Queen Margaret of Denmark. Following the excavation of their remains in the 1860s, Queen Victoria paid for the ornate tomb and monument that marks their grave.

The legend I spoke about is that monks from Cambuskenneth Abbey secretly spirited away an arm of Sir William Wallace’s after his judicial murder in130f. They are said to have buried it in the grounds here. A stone marker bearing the initials 'WW' is said to pint directly at the nearby site of his greatest victory, the National Wallace Monument. Again I hope I also have photo(s) of the marker to share later.

With Princes Street being closed between Frederick and Castle Street I ended up on a bus that took mw to Lothian Road, meaning I had to walk through West Princes Street Gardens to catch my second bus.

I had a dream that I was on Corstorphine Hill with a bunch of photographers trying to catch the sunrise from the Rest and Be Thankful looking back over Edinburgh, them with their fabcy cameras, me cutting about with my phone!

I woke up before seeing it and looked t my phone, 4.35 AM. So I asked google what time sunrise was, 4.41 it told me, I might be lucky I thought and quickly got dressed, feeding Chris before I left as he was being vocal! Well it wasn't a classic sunrise, but I wandered for a wee bit listening to the dawn chorus of birds as I went along.

My friends Bernadette and Adam and Adam on Castle Hill today Bern was down from Perth for a wee tour, the first I have done this year. I managed it without any falls, but a few stumbles, she was a bit shocked at the number people who got in my way, but top half of The Royal Mile can test the patience of anyone! Ie was an enjoyable, but tiring day, I went to school with her, her husband died a few years ago, hopefull she will come to visit again, I have promised not to walk so far with her next time and spend the day hopping on and off buses! Oh and the streets were too busy to really take pics. :(

A wee bit Haar in Stockbridge's most instagrammed street at 9.20 last night on my way home.

Edinburgh Haar.

he Edinburgh haar was 4olling in as I headed home aout 9pm last nghit.

The Haar is a dense, cold sea fog that rolls in from the North Sea to blanket the city and coastline. Most common between April and September, it occurs when warm air passes over the chilly ocean, causing moisture to condense and drift inland, dramatically reducing visibility.

Blackrock Cottage

It serves as an off-grid mountain refuge and basecamp for members and their guests
