“You are the best at letting people know they’re stupid. It’s a talent really” Madison joked, reading over his shoulder as he texted their mutual friend. The redhead nodded along as he typed, impressed with his no bullshit attitude “Nope, I think it’s perfect- if she still wants to ignore you then fuck her” she laughed pulling the bottle from his hands for her turn to drink. Him asking if he had a chance with Ash made her snort slightly, causing her to drop the bottle into her lap and rest her hand sympathetically on his shoulder “Hunny, I don’t think Chris Hemsworth stood a chance with that girl” she said before bringing the bottle to her lips “But fuck it. NYU here we come- wouldn’t it be hilarious if you got stuck in a room with Tate again?” finally she let the whiskey pour into her mouth, her mind starting to grow fuzzy from it’s effects

Picking up the almost empty bottle of Maker’s he tipped the rest of its contents into his mouth. “You know what? I think you should text Felix,” he suggested, loudly. Getting up and almost falling onto Madison, he picked up her phone and handed it to her. “Come on, today is the day we say what we mean,” he declared, again loudly. “But no lying,” he added.

Making his way across the room he rummaged through Madison’s purse for the other bottle they’d purchased. Walking back over and sitting down next to his friend he popped open the bottle of vodka. It had taken forever to find any store that sold anything but wine and champagne and it looked like they were going to need to visit again. Throwing his head back, he took a huge swig of the Grey Goose and peered over the girl’s shoulders. 

“Tell him, his abs are amazing but he needs to learn to appreciate a girl with the whole package. And then tell him how much you really love him because he’s the best friend a guy could have. And then tell him how much you actually hate soccer because he makes it more intense than it has to be. And tell him he sucks for being a year younger and not living in NYC with you. And then tell him he sucks a lot for sleeping with the girl you were in love with for forever.”

Madison let out a loud laugh as Ren tried to cover his reaction. They didn’t spend a lot of time talking about boys, mostly just his royal fuck ups with whatever girl he had been perusing “Yeah, he’s great- just kinda, well Felix” she laughed as she grabbed the bottle out of his hand and took a long swig. At his last comment, Madi scrunched her nose up thinking about all the sentimental bullshit that some people tended to feel “When have you even known me to be sappy like that?” she asked, handing the bottle back to him so she could clap her hands together “Alight- so mission friends with Ash again. Let’s do this. Honestly I’d just tell her she’s being stupid. Not sure if that’ll work for you though”

Laughing, Ren nodded. “Yeah, you’re right. It’s probably why you’re the only woman on earth who will talk to me for more than 2 minutes,” he replied. Raising an eyebrow at her suggestion, he laughed. “Now, that is something I can do,” he said pointing at no one in particular. “If there’s one thing I know how to do, it’s telling people they’re stupid.” 

Picking up his phone he quickly typed up a message for Ash.

txt (to Ash): all kidding aside, i think it’s time we be friends again.

txt (to Ash): all this ignoring me is kind of stupid. 

txt (to Ash): also, you should probably let me take you out to lunch the next time you’re in nyc, just saying.

Having hit ‘send’ he looked back at Madi. “Too much?” he asked before laughing. Tossing his phone over his shoulder, he shrugged. It had gotten to a point where all this Henderson bullshit really didn’t matter anymore. “She probably won’t ever talk to me again but whatever. We’re college bound right?” he asked. 

Taking another swig of Maker’s he turned back around to take a peak at his phone. Sighing he looked back at Madi, and asked, “did I ever even have a chance with Ash?”

“True, the free shots were nice. He’s a sweetie. A dumb, desperate, sweetheart” Madi laughed before letting her face scrunch up into a look of mild disgust. She knew Felix had a habit and sleeping around, but it wasn’t something she really wanted to hear about after finally hooking up with him after months of foreplay. “Don’t worry about it, I knew what I was getting into” she sighed with a light roll of her eyes “Honestly, I just didn’t want to go to college a virgin”

Ren had been sipping on the Maker’s when the realization that Madi had been a  virgin nearly the entirety of their time at Henderson dawned on him. Nearly choking on the whiskey, he tried his best to clear his throat without drawing much attention to himself. “Oh. Um, I mean, it was a great choice?” he tried, completely at a loss for words. “I mean Felix is a great guy. He’s my best friend,” he tried once more. 

Wiping the residual whiskey from his chin with the end of his sleeve, his thoughts broke loose once again, “but don’t women want their first to be all... special and shit?” he asked. Thinking back to his first though. gave him minor nightmares. The whole fiasco was a mess and the girl never spoke to him again...

With a lighthearted grin Madison bumped her shoulder into Ren’s arm playfully, letting out her signature sigh she always did when he was beating himself up. Which was something that happened way to often. “The thing with her is, her best friend claims she was into you. I don’t know how much you’re going to be able to do until she get’s over it” she didn’t know how he of all people managed to get himself into these messes with girls, but he did. All the time “You aren’t a desperate idiot- Liam is a desperate idiot. You’re just a guy who got hurt” gave him a warm smile, letting her head rest lightly on his shoulder “College is going to be so much better than this shit hole- somewhat related I um, slept with Felix?”

“But the free shots,” he joked. Despite their many personality differences, Ren quite liked Liam. And when Liam and Felix were together, there was always a good time to be had. But speaking of Felix, Ren paused. “Damn. You too?” he asked surprised. The words had just slipped out unintentionally.

“Fuck, sorry,” he tried to correct himself. He honestly had no problem with his two best friends screwing one another. It was more that Daph had used it against him last night in their text battle. “Fuck,” he uttered again as he ran a hand through his hair. “I mean that’s great. I’m sure he was a great lay. He’s got a hot bod. Even Daphne likes the washboard abs. Who wouldn’t?” he continued, his thoughts free-flowing without a filter of any sort.

Laughing at Ren’s attempt to convince her, Madison simply shook her head disapprovingly “I don’t think so Renny. No way in hell are you getting that phone tonight” she informed the boy as she pointed her finger at him. She watched him for a moment as he did his weird pondering thing he tended to do, she wasn’t even aware if he knew he did it. As his attention turned back to her she beamed at him “That my dear, is the best idea you’ve had for a while. What even happened with you and Ash?” she asked

Tapping his lower lip with his index finger, he hummed before finally answering, “Well... I can’t tell you why but she was feeling pretty sad? So we started kissing? And then drunken and also sad me, thought I had a chance?” Laughing as he recalled the situation, he continued, “And well, I was literally standing in front of her naked when she rejected me? Probably twice? Then the last time I got naked, Felix walked in. You know, because I’m a desperate idiot who didn’t learn the first two times that no was a no.” 

Wiping at his lower lip with the end of his sleeve, he finally sighed. Thinking about it now, it really did seem sad. “But you know, when a beautiful girl starts kissing you, you don’t say no - you know?” he added, mostly to bandage what was left of his self-confidence. “My dad said the ladies are easier in college, whatever that means. Something about less drama and they don’t mind that I have... actual emotions? God. Am I a chick in dude’s clothing?” he asked, wincing at the realization. “Actually, please don’t answer that one.”

Taking the bottle from her best friend, Madi took down a long swig. How Ren managed to get himself in consistent girl trouble was beyond her but she would always be there to help him out. As she was now. As the bottle left her lips she sighed “Why would she say it if she didn’t mean it. I know she’s a bitch but do you think she’d that much of a bitch?” she asked. She only really knew about Daphne from what Ren had told her, so her opinion was completely biased 

Scratching behind his ear, he laughed. “You know, I think I need to look at my phone again to see if she was serious or not. You know, to reexamine the evidence,” he tried between laughs. Sliding against the wall, he reached over into Madi’s lap to grab the bottle of Maker’s. Taking another swig, he considered her words. Daphne had never been a ‘bitch’ in his mind - or even unfair. She was just, Daphne. Shaking his head he put the bottle on the floor and decidedly declared, “You know what? That’s it for this Daphne talk. How about we repair my friendship with Ash and then call it a day with another riveting documentary?”

Running a hand through his hair, Ren took a sip of his bottle of whiskey before handing it back to Madison. Without his phone to fiddle with, he rummaged through his pockets. He couldn’t believe Madison banned him from texting for the night after he 1) yelled at Daph and 2) texted Ash - who made it very clear, making out with him was a mistake. Actually, put that way, he could maybe see why she took his phone away. He sighed. People were so complicated. Sometimes he believed his life would make a great novel. And then he’d remember how shitty of a main character it’d be. Looking back at Madison, he finally broke the silence, “so you really think she likes me?” He was referring to Daphne and he was still very confused no matter how many times Madison tried to explain it to him.
