My honest take on the Wind Ancient design as a east asian (korean-am) user, removed from the insane discourse about the familiar, is largely positive still.
The biggest hope I have is that that they seem to have learned and taken the appropriate steps with this ancient release- so that in the future they can do better with more designs from non-white cultures.
In particular, I do hope they're willing to branch out from only using European and East Asian cultures as inspiration for their designs in the future.
I get that they likely don't want to spark the insane discourse with their mostly white userbase but I do think there's ample room for apparel and dragons based off of lots of different cultures if they stick to their guns.
I sympathize with the effort & budget it takes with sensitivity consultants and increased moderation but I do still hold out some hope for them to keep trying to expand outside of their white Western worldview in the future.
New wind ancient horse is a sign from the horse gods that I should get into Uma Musume finally
Jenuinely why may every other game studio and media in the world [Blizzards’s World of Warcraft, My Little Pony, Monster Hunter, MtG] allows to put a Kirin/qilin/girin in their videogame but Flight Rising must drag themselves over the coals ? For daring to do what everyone else may do? Would any Asian people have been jeuinely annoyed had they made Cirrus without all this apologies? I honestly want to know! It’s is confusing
.
Putting everything else aside these are some pretty hilarious examples to use.
WoW - The white male early 2000s playerbase doesn't care. It's also just very obviously racist in other ways that a including a qilin would not matter!
MLP - From a quick google search it seems like they're pretty minor characters. Also the main target audience is children and their parents.
Monster Hunter- Japanese game studio LOL
MtG - The first cards with them were printed in 2004. WoTC is also a much larger company and probably consult some kind of sensitivity expert + employ actual east Asian illustrators cause they have money. Also also there's thousands of MtG cards.
And also MtG has still has had racism "controversies"- they're just different ones!
Maybe I'm simply out of touch but the familar fundraising thing doesn't bother me at all really??
I understand that people do not like the idea of being subject to FOMO but this is insanely tame in the grand scheme of it all.
It seems like people are mostly mad about the limited timeframe and the fact that it costs IRL money but there'a a logic to it that makes sense?
The timeframe is long enough that it's not a predatory impulse purchase exclusive thing, 90 days is hilariously long in terms of predatory games. They probably don't want to send individual $2.50 donations and set a timeframe to donate it all at once.
Also! I think a critical thing is that they make NO PROFIT off the familiar sales. It's not a exactly a "megacorp rainbow capitalism moment" if they don't make money from it.
Some people have floated around them taking a portion of gem sales for a certain time- but I'd argue that introduces way more negative incentives as then that WOULD actually mean they would profit from diversity intiatives.
I sincrely doubt that these new familars will end up being heavily scalped due to larger and older userbase of Flight Rising in contrast to Kickstarter familars when the userbase way MUCH lower.
There's legitimate concerns about the nature of corporate charity donations and the actual usefulness of NGOs but that's NOT the scope of a petsite staff lol.
Please just chill the fuck out y'all
adding to the main post since I've been shadowbanned by tumblr and can't reply lol:
@here-there-were-dragons
This is such a massive reach to infer from a single charity familiar in over 10 years of the site existing.
I hate corporations deeply but this is just not a reasonable assumption to make from one data point lol. Just making up stuff to be mad at??
YAYYYYY :33

wait.... DVD logo bounce Effect.
I failed to consider the fact that I actually have windows 11 animation effects off for performance + personal aesthetic reasons which means I have to manually turn that shit on to see the new feature. So now I'm fighting for my life trying to find a way to make firefox ignore the prefers-reduced-motion flag because apparently it's tied to windows' ugly ass animations 👍 boy I wish I could see the shiny dragons!!!!!!!!!
update is very cool for sparkle dragons but i think they have an untapped niche of targetting them towards the dirt swamp desert enthusiasts.
and also a water one that doesn't distort the colors. fr devs come on milk the g1 enthusiasts more
asking FR devs to release seasonal effects in the style of the summer swelter/spring breeze/etc but less busy.
also do a windy dust one ala cowboy films thanks.
