Fun and fresh reminder that Timekeeper does not speak using contractions almost ever! The only one I’ve ever seen them use in canon is “I’m” and it’s used a total of two times, once during the Stay Here ending of Mission! Save The Future and once during A Rift In Time. Any time there’s a contraction, they will use the long form of the contraction or find an alternative if it doesn’t make a lot of sense to use the long form.
On the contrary, Ruler of the Ephemeral Flow almost always uses contractions. It’s a neat little detail in comparison, implying Ruler is no longer upholding their old formal way of speaking in favor of just talking like most people do, because they’re depressed.
Of course! I can actually show you multiple examples!!
Now, I tend not to count anything that occurs outside of main story events (unless they have a connection to a main story event, like A Rift In Time, where you get Continuum Cog), because those usually ignore Timekeepers usual dialogue quirks altogether for some weird reason. A recent example of this would be Cookie Of The Year 2022, as for whatever reason, Timekeepers dialogue is incredibly casual for some reason and makes use of contractions constantly, which is pretty out of character for her. Since it’s not canon story, I don’t count it as an example of her using contractions, and neither should anybody else!!
Timekeeper talks almost exclusively like this, opting to not use contractions when one could be used. (Below are 4 screenshots—2 from Operation Timeguard, 2 from Mission! Save The Future!—all of which depicting instances where Timekeeper dodges using contractions.) In the 4 shown, you can see her opt not to use “didn’t” “it’s” “I’m” and “I’ve.” There’s a couple more examples, but due to Tumblr image limits, I couldn’t put them here. You can look up the cutscenes for these events and watch them to see other examples if you need more.
There’s only two instances I know of where she doesn’t do this that are part of canon story or an event that coincides with it, and both happen to be used with the word “I’m.” One is during the Stay Here ending of MSTF, and the other is in A Rift In Time. (Shown below: MSTF Stay Here ending on the left, A Rift In Time on the right) It’s unclear why she does this, because it’s literally the only 2 canon examples I can find of this.
Ruler, on the other hand, almost always uses contractions. Since they never speak in event story, the best we can get is their tapped dialogue. (Shown below, 3 screenshots of their tap dialogue) There’s barely an instance where she isn’t using contractions, which doesn’t go explained, but it’s something only Ruler does. A mirror opposite way of speaking compared to Timekeeper.
It’s a very stark contrast, amplified by the fact that Timekeeper (for the most part) talks pretty formally while Ruler talks very casually. It’s something I don’t see people make use of very often (and I get it, not everyone spends days studying lore like I do dhdjbejdbejd) but it’s an interesting little detail I love.
