Hi! My name's Rex, and this is where I'll be posting stuff about my models! My main acc is PredawnRex04

Hi! I'm Rex, and as you could guess, this is where I'll be posting stuff about my model trains! I mainly use HO/OO scale, but i do have a couple On30 locos, and an F scale loco!

I have created a fictional nation for my railway to take place in, which is Galant Island. Named after a type of car that is closely related to my 1976 Lancer.

I do have some lore relevant to it, which I may post in future, but for now I'll keep this blog mainly focused on my models.

The main railway of this nation is the GSR; Galant State Rail. (Its also another car referance) I've only recently settled on this name, so I've yet to put it on any if my locos. I'll probably go over each of my models as I add GSR onto them, excluding locos that I'm not modifying, like my NSWGR C30T by Wombat Models or my VR D3 by Pheonix Reproductions.

I haven't got any track set up at the moment, as I'm still finishing off my hobby room, which is a mezzanine in our shed. (Just the roof paneling, trims and benches before i move my stuff in, as of 13/10/23) I'll be running DCC instead of analogue/DC.

As for my latest locomotive purchase, the Big boy, number 4005.

Ive yet to decide on a name for her, but i have started on some lining!

Now, a current project!

My own rendition of the thomas character Molly, but in this case shes an LMS compound, because I have one and my Edward is already a D16.

I started off using some Tamiya primer, then a couple coats of Matisse Yellow Oxide, and a custom mix to try and fit her gold-yellow secondary colour. Followed by some red lining

But,

I wasnt happy with it. So i washed & scrubbed off the (water based) paint

With the somewhat fresh start, i mixed up some primary yellow, with a bit of the yellow oxide. As for the secondary, i mixed the yellow oxide with some iridescent bright gold.

Then some red lining and gold accents, using a Bright Gold paint pen by SMS that i bought at the Canberra Railway Exhibition today

Now i gotta do some touch ups around the lining. And thats where I'm upto at the moment!

So, onto the models,

I'll just be going off the pictures in my phones camera roll, because a lot can change in 4 months.

So theres a lot to go over!

Firstly, theres Samson, a USRA 2-10-2 that i bought off a friend. (I named him after a character in an animated short that came out around the same time i got him)

Then theres Kelly! I believe i may have already posted about this one, but the photos are there so 🤷‍♂️. Bought this guy off the same friend as Samson, but I got this one first, and named it after him.

Theres also Bittern, which i know ive posted about before, but i dont think he had his nameplates then. I decided on the name ages ago, by asking the cast of @askyoungiron who would like a pannier tank named after them.

And lastly, (for the moment), theres Kaan. A J50 named after a dear friend of mine that I met through Ttte fan fiction, that helps me bring my fictional railway and its nation to life :)

Some more stuff!

Firstly, and primarily, a new 3d printing project! A freelance design 4-6-2+2-6-4 garrat using 2 tri-ang jinty chassis. The project is much further along now, but I'm currently having issues with my 3d printer.

And secondly, the mail van that i bought from hattons (see the latest post before today), all nice and painted

Firstly, i forgot to mention the n7, which i re-lettered to have the name of Galant Island's primary rail museum; the Margot Anne Railway Museum

Anyways, some more stuff!

Some in-progress photos of my ARM D55, which, detail-wise, left a bit to be desired (namely the super glossy, toy-like finish). I used this as the basis for my Standard Goods livery. (And also a photo where i was trialing a gwr safety bonnet)

Then theres some pics of a 66XX i got, after i fitted some replacement buffers.

And some running photos of the D55.

And finally, the C36 class i bought

Then we have The Crocodile. A loco from my grandpa's old On30 layout. Ive been dcc fiting it for the past, like, 2 or 3 years during which i have rewired it a few times and gotten frustrated with it many more. I'll give it its own post in a bit

Hoo boy, i forgot i had this blog for a good while there. But! There have been some big changes! Mainly that my models are no longer relegated to shelf-sitting! Theyre now either sitting in a drawer, or on display under a bench, which sounds worse.....

But! The bench is my layout!

I finally finished the room (mezzanine) i was building in the shed, and ive moved my computer and whatnot up there!

Im currently working on the route for the mainline;

Starting at Port Blues, leaving the terminus station heading onto the up line, immediately after exiting the yard there is a 3% grade for about 4.5 meters of track (scale length is about 392 meters, unless ive buggered up my math) where it will then plateau as it reaches The Mountain (i still havent built the bench part for this section yet). Then, leaving this station, the mainline begins its descent as it rounds the mountain. The down line runs parallel, albeit not level, with the up line.

Package from Hattons arrived!

1st up:

Airfix Autocoach

Ive already taken the roof off, since i noticed that it had a switch on the bottom that turns internal lights on! So i wanted to see how it worked and I found that whoever built the kit didnt use heatshrink, didnt secure the battery, and didn't have very strong joins to the battery & light on the earth side, so I'll have to resolder that & cover his joins.

2nd project:

Imma make a garret >:)

These two old 3f's that are mechanically sound will make up the chassis of my new Garret Project!

3rd project:

Mail van!

This one will be a simple repaint, but also a strange repair; it has two levers beneath it, one that opens a 'drop off' side for mail, and one that opens the catching side. The catching side isnt connected to its lever.

4th:

A buncha pullmans

These are to match a pullman i already have, which i named after my sister! These three will by named by my sister. I just gotta work on the couplers and some other bits.

Another GSR!

This one wasn't built in-house, but was significantly rebuilt in-house

GSR Guardian Class 2547, Doncaster. The former LNER A1 was purchased by the GSR in 1929 after being involved in an accident that resulted in severe damage to his tender, cab, rear pony truck and frame. He was given a tender that was something of a foundation for the NSWGR's C38 tenders. He is rarely seen without his Pullman coach, Lillyan L.

So the first Engines to bear the GSR lettering have had it added!

Firstly, the Sentinel Class (of my own design)

This is Willan Hill, the class leader of the Sentinel Class. Built by FAFO Engineering works on Galant Island in 1936. After some trials on his home island, he was sent to Scotland and (in my RWS AU) Sodor for 4 years both to trial his design on different terrain and also to basically 'get a read on' the UK railway network's infrastructure & culture.

Upon his return, 29 more of his class were built, the first 10 of which were sent to a friend's railway, the KSSR as a gift. These 10 were named after the local deities, bar the first, who had II added to the end, seeing as there already was a locomotive bearing that name on the island.

Of the 19 remaining, every even number were built with larger bogie tenders, while the uneven were built with the same tender as Willan.

I do actually plan to build a 7 1/4" gauge model of the Sentinel Class, but that will probably be a different member of the class.

Im in the process of priming/sanding the tender atm, and ive also added james' cab windows and whistle.

His. Whistle.

I didn't want to go with the Model Series' version of his whistle, itd be a pain to print that small and itd be really fragile, so i thought "oh I'll check the railway series". As @weirdowithaquill knows, i couldn't find a SINGLE frame where you could clearly see his whistle in the first 25 books. And even in some of the later ones its hard to see it! But I managed to work out that its behind his safetys, against his cab.

Some progress on James;

Goddamn it

I got the front pony truck perfect! But the footplate extension looks wrong, and the tender is WAY too big.

So ive cut part of his running board off so that i can change the extension, which will (hopefully) be hidden by a step.

The extension is printing at the moment, and ill be setting the tender off to print tomorrow morning
