Police fire tear gas, rubber bullets at Beirut rally; 75 wounded

Peaceful protests organized today in Beirut, Lebanon were violently repressed by riot police who used tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannons to disperse the protesters.

Roughly 3,000-4,000 people poured into Nejmeh Square from different Lebanese regions carrying Lebanese flags and banners condemning the country’s politicians. The clashes started around 7 p.m., about one hour after the demonstration began at Riad al-Solh Square, when riot police attacked protesters with batons and water cannons to try to prevent them from reaching the nearby Nejmeh Square.

“The people want the downfall of the government,” and “revolution, revolution!” were among the slogans chanted by the demonstrators. Lebanon has been in a state of political paralysis since 2009, as the country’s Parliament extended its own term twice, in 2013 and 2014, which also sparked protests by civil society activists. The country has now been without a president for over a year, and the recent garbage crisis & electricity failure all prove the government’s incapacity to look after the country. The people have had enough.

why the Dismaland backlash is annoying me

listen i get it. i get why everyone is annoyed with Banksy and is sort of disowning him. i understand why people are over him. I GET IT.

but come ON.

it’s not just Banksy that’s involved with Dismaland. i’m thinking it was essentially his idea, but he’s using it to host OTHER ARTISTS. from AROUND THE WORLD. he only has about three or four pieces throughout the show.

there are Palestinian, Saudi Arabian, and TALENTED FEMALE artists showing their pieces in the Dismaland gallery and throughout the park that you’re tearing down because ‘Banksy is SO pretentious’ or whatever trendy thing you think you’re submitting to. Banksy himself said that he’s trying to do something different BECAUSE he realizes that his artwork is the view point of a middle class white dude.

please give Dismaland a chance. please realize it’s not a soapbox for Banksy. it’s an art festival(that is actually reasonably priced seeing as how Damien Hirst is showing there) for artists who are making strong statements.

I suppose I can’t necessarily judge the individual pieces without attending, and I’m glad that it includes a multitude of artists; however, to my knowledge, banksy is essentially the curator of the show–and curation/curators may be criticized separately from individual pieces. so far, it seems that the premise and execution of the show’s curation is the main issue, not necessarily the pieces themselves. I’m sort of intrigued by both the migrant worker and the Ariel pieces, but when placed in the larger context of a pretentious “fuck-the-normies” setting, potentially thought-provoking works are overshadowed by uninspired tropes. on a personal/artist level, I’m much more interested in installations and pieces that work within a certain context to criticize it, a la sondheim’s “into the woods”, which utilizes fairy tale tropes to examine the harsh realities of dreams and wishes, or revolutionary girl utena, which deconstructs the entire shoujo genre of anime to create powerful new statements. So far, dismaland functions in a more separatist manner–the art piece equivalent of “I’m not like other girls”

what people don’t seem to understand is that even if there is work by a diverse selection of artists, they were still curated by a privileged white embodiment of gentrification. i’m so done with just hearing ‘woc were in this’ and then tumblr loses all ability for critical thinking. these were poc+women handpicked by white men to suit their purposes and intentionality, to further their message. we know that banksy is a piece of shit and that he makes shit work for a fact, so why should we expect the work he curates to be good.
