About 3 weeks ago, I started watching Jujutsu Kaisen. I was vaguely aware of it when it aired in 2020, as I was still teaching then and my students were into it, but I was taking a break from the shounen genre after the gorram disaster ending that was Naruto (and also elbow deep in kylux).
I’m… FOUR YEARS late to the party, but Christ on a cracker this is an amazing show! Yeah, it’s not doing anything new in terms of shounen tropes but uses and deconstructs them wonderfully in a way that makes the show feel like a comfy blanket (even with all the horror, death, gore, mindfuckery, existential dread and heartbreak). I truly enjoyed the seemingly endless mood whiplash, though not gonna lie, I went into S2 all 🤩 expecting fun and wacky high school era Gojo and friends shenanigans and finished it 🫠😵💫😱😭🤯
My faves:
1) Suguru (my emotional support genocidal maniac)
2) Nanami (relatable as a former corporate slave)
3) Sukuna (99% of this is because he’s voiced by Suwabe Junichi)
There are no characters I outright hate, which is refreshing. Yuji is kinda dense at times but he’s not an idiot nor is he a bland nice guy or absolute jerkass. Female characters have actual personalities that aren’t merely “I like a boy!”, color me surprised.
I will never emotionally recover from the Hidden Inventory Arc but I’m ok with that because I have a new disaster ship, hi satosugu fans, I’m going to hyperfixate/consume every piece of fan content relevant to my interests and possibly never speak of it again because aforementioned FOUR YEARS after the hype train has run lol
