In the latest edition of US News & World Report’s rankings of US higher ed institutions, Rice University’s overview highlighted the contributions of Student Run Business to Rice’s unique campus culture. Willy’s Pub and Rice Coffeehouse were named in the second paragraph of the summary, prior to mentions of the residential college system and Rice’s Division I athletics program.
1912 will be on sale for the first time at Willy’s Pub on Wednesday, October 10th. CEO, Rassul Zarinfar, (Baker ’04) presents this beer in honor of Rice University’s Centennial Celebration. Please join us for this historic event!
94% of SRB staff agree or agree strongly that they prefer working for managers who are also fellow students.
Thanks again to the Student Center for the new aprons!

Question: What is Student Run Business?
Answer: For students, by students, Student Run Business provides both educational opportunities as well as crucial services that benefit all members of the Rice community. We are entirely managed and staffed by students, with guidance from our two wonderful advisors out of the Rice Student Center, support from the Rice administration as well as in collaboration with Housing & Dining.
Student managers work together to ensure rent is paid, quality products are served, health code is followed, and that customers and staff alike stay happy. It's a one-of-a-kind chance for students to engage in hands-on management practices; so it's quite possible that the student making your order could have also ordered the ingredients or first decided to carry that menu item in the first place.

Excerpt from page 4 of the 1979 Willy's Pub Barstaff Manual.
My job is not only a source of income, but also a connection to colleges other than my own, and the opportunity to contribute to the actual workings of a real business (as opposed to simply being employed by one).

Question: Does SRB hire students with no official prior job experience?
Answer: Yes! In fact, one out of every three of our student employees started their first job with us! Our student management staff works hard to provide orientations and trainings to teach basic skills as well as fully-equip their peers with all the knowledge they need on the job. From working a cash register to handling customers, we're here to help those willing to learn.
