How the Sun Damages the Skin
Dr. Richard Rust, an MD graduate of the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, has been working as an anesthesiologist for nearly 20 years. During that time, Dr. Richard Rust noticed that patients who were tanned had skin that was noticeably damaged next to skin that had been protected by swimsuits. This observation inspired the Indianapolis doctor to learn more about skincare and skin damage caused by the sun. Although sunlight benefits the body by helping the skin produce vitamin D, the sun also causes damage that results in premature aging, excess pigmentation, and other skin-related issues. Damage from the sun is caused by exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Ultraviolet rays are divided into three categories: UVC, UVB, and UVA radiation. UVC radiation is completely absorbed by the ozone layer before it can reach people. However, UVB and UVA radiation do reach the skin and cause damage at varying levels. The primary cause of sunburn is UVB radiation. Typically, these rays affect the epidermis, or the outermost layer of the skin, and are most intense between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. UVA radiation affects deeper skin layers. Over time, exposure to UVA radiation reduces the skin’s ability to retain its normal elasticity. This creates the appearance of wrinkles or leathery skin. Skin cells can repair some of this damage along with the damage caused by UVB rays, but the ability of the body to repair itself decreases as we age.
