Study Published by ASA Suggests Regional Anesthesia Better for Infants

A board-certified anesthesiologist in Indianapolis, Richard Rust, MD, currently works at a local hospital through Northside Anesthesia Services, LLC. Providing all forms of anesthesia through his work with the Indianapolis-based physician anesthesia group, Richard Rust, MD, belongs to the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). ASA has maintained a commitment to advancing the practice of anesthesiology and improving patient care since its founding in 1905. To this end, the society provides a wide range of educational resources and supports field research. Recently, ASA published the results of a new study that looked at anesthesia options for infants. The study was published in the Online First edition of Anesthesiology, the society’s official medical journal, and examined differences between how infants and toddlers were affected by various anesthesia following a hernia surgery. Researchers studied the rates of apnea in 722 infants after undergoing a hernia surgery, the most common infant procedure that requires anesthesia. The current study is the largest to date and is part of an ongoing study that analyzes long-term anesthesia effects on neurodevelopment. Results showed that within the first 30 minutes of surgery, apnea was significantly less likely in patients who had undergone regional anesthesia, specifically spinal anesthesia. This indicates that regional anesthesia is safer for use on infants and toddlers than is general anesthesia. However, some patients did require additional anesthesia depending on a variety of factors.
