"Racism is a poison. Hate is a poison," German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Thursday, as evidence pointed to the gunman being motivated by extreme views.
At least 10 people were killed by a gunman in western Germany late Wednesday at several locations, including two hookah lounges frequented by ethnic Kurdish customers. The suspected shooter, who was later found dead, left a letter and video claiming responsibility, according to multiple German news agencies.
The suspect had reportedly posted materials online that were vehemently anti-immigrant, prompting federal prosecutors to take over the case.
“Racism is a poison. Hate is a poison,” German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in a video statement Thursday as evidence began to point to the gunman being motivated by extreme right-wing views.

Former President Jimmy Carter, 95, was admitted to Emory University Hospital Monday evening for the procedure, accompanied by his wife, Rosalynn.
Godspeed, Jimmy!
In a Tuesday morning tweet, the president lashed out at the process underway in the House that may lead to an impeachment vote.

Four freshman lawmakers, all minorities, targeted in a series of tweets by the president on Sunday denounced his remarks as racist and responsible for "stoking white nationalism."
The celebration of the Women’s World Cup soccer championship shifts this week from France to New York City. On Wednesday, the U.S. Women’s National Team will be honored with a ticker tape parade and keys to the city, following its 2-0 win over the Netherlands in Sunday’s final in France.
But amid the celebration, the women now turn their focus back to a more serious matter. A gender discrimination lawsuit, filed before the tournament, demands pay equal to that of their male counterparts. And legions of U.S. Women’s National Team supporters say a fourth Women’s World Cup title makes the case even stronger.
Equal pay
In the stadium near Lyon, France, on Sunday, it didn’t take long for the pivot.
From joy to indignation.
As U.S. players hugged and celebrated their hard-earned victory over a tough Dutch team, chants of “equal pay” bubbled up from the stands. There was booing too — for members of FIFA, soccer’s international governing body, which reportedly will pay the U.S. women a $4 million bonus, compared with the $38 million paid to last year’s World Cup winner.
From fans to players, the message was clear.
“To have our ladies represent and show that our soccer program is superior, it should inspire the United States to pay these women what they deserve to be paid,” said Kenneth Lloyd, from Austin, Texas. He watched the game in France with his son and daughter.
Megan Rapinoe, the outspoken U.S. winger, won the Golden Ball award, given to the tournament’s MVP. But after the match, she assumed her other role as outspoken plaintiff in the class action suit filed in March against U.S. Soccer, the sport’s governing body in the United States. The suit was brought by U.S. players, but Rapinoe says everyone at this Women’s World Cup helped push the fight forward.

...and why T.F. not? They WON the cup!
The Department of Homeland Security targeted individuals for "failing to depart the U.S. as previously agreed," among other factors. It's the latest effort to clamp down on interior enforcement.
Guess he's gotta pay off his inauguration bill.
There’s a certain kind of song you just want to crank up after a bad breakup or a rough day at work. In 1963, a young singer renowned for a hit about getting ditched at a party unleashed just such an anthem.
Lesley Gore’s coolly mutinous “You Don’t Own Me” is richly scored, building from a minor-key dirge in the verses to a spirited chorus. The 1963 hit reframed the 17-year-old Gore as a confident chanteuse, rather than the pert pop princess then best-known for such bubblegum hits as “It’s My Party” and “Judy’s Turn To Cry.” Her earlier songs had mostly concerned boys — getting dumped by boys, getting approval from boys, bragging about the boys who liked her.
In an interview on WHYY’s Fresh Air in 1991, Gore recalled when “You Don’t Own Me” first came to her attention. “At the time, I know I chose it because I know I liked the strength in the lyric,” she told host Terry Gross. “But, for me, it was not a song about being a woman. It was about being a person, and what was involved with that. Of course, it got picked up as an anthem for women, which makes me very proud.”

Ranking Roger, English Beat Singer/General Public Co-founder, Dead at 56
Ranking Roger, frontman for the English Beat and later a co-founder of General Public, has died at 56, the band known simply as the Beat in its native U.K. said on Facebook.
“Words cannot express our sadness at the loss of our friend and brother,” the Beat wrote of the man born Roger Charlery.
“A loss to the world and to music certainly, but most keenly felt by those who loved him best. Deepest condolences to his family and to our Beat family worldwide.”
Roger announced his diagnosis of lung cancer in January but no cause of death had been announced.
“So sad to hear about Ranking Roger,” R.E.M.’s Mike Mills tweeted. “We loved the (English) Beat, and opened for them on multiple tours just so we could watch, listen and learn. He and his mates brought a lot of joy into the world.”
On Facebook, UB40 said it was a privilege to know and perform with Roger.
“So, so sad to hear that Ranking Roger has finally lost his battle with cancer,” they wrote. “He was a lovely man, a friend and fan of UB40 who joined us on stage as our first toaster/mc in the very early days.”
The English Beat released three ska albums between 1980 and ’82, reformed in 2016 and put out Public Confidential earlier this year. Between stints with the Beat, Roger formed General Public with members of the Clash, Dexys Midnight Runners and the Specials, who tweeted, “Goodnight to a legend.
“RIP Ranking Roger.”
“Very sorry to hear that Ranking Roger has passed away,” Billy Bragg tweeted. “Rest easy, Rude Boy.”

Via @CNN “The 11 most dangerous things Donald Trump said in his Montana speech”
Trump is traveling the backwaters of middle America. He is equating his base with Russians, and they agree.
White nationalists in America identify with our biggest enemy, Russia.
Trump could NEVER have his rally in a big, diverse US city. Advanced populations despise Trump.
Trump could never rally in NYC, LA, SF, Chicago, SeattlePhilly, Boston, DC, Houston, Miami.
Trump needs monochromatic crowds. He needs to tell resentful white people how Trump is the victim.
I get why Trump likes Russia. They own him. Trump is a Russian agent who benefitted from laundering dirty Russian money for decades. Trump is real estate corruption personified. But…
What does a lifelong Cold War Republican in their 70s get from venerating Putin?
Trump is #RussiaFirst. It’s predictable and obvious. Republicans must be removed from office this November so we can get Trump out of office.
Yet another example of Democrats saving the conservative working class from their own party.
