Continuing on my occasional TNG rewatch theme, I'm struck by how emotionally mature Riker and Troi's relationship is.

They're exes, but they still love each other. They're not jealous of each other. They're happy when the other one has a new partner, while being comforting and protective if the relationship goes wrong. They are probably each other's closest friends, but they still maintain appropriate professional behaviour when they're working together. Whether or not they're together, they'll always be there for each other.

And looking at a lot of the other ways that relationships are depicted on TNG and 90s Star Trek in general (e.g. the O'Briens, who barely seem to tolerate each other half the time), I'm fascinated that they managed to get Riker and Troi so right.
