Title: DreamScene - Harris Family Morning
Characters: Riley Pierce {Nick Harris}
Status: Complete - October 18, 2023
Riley reached an arm out from under the covers and not so gently silenced her alarm clock. She hated mornings, especially during the week. Monday to Friday she awoke to an empty and quiet loft, her dad off to work already, and had to fend for herself for breakfast. She grumbled as she climbed out of bed and moved towards her bathroom and the shower within.
As she finished changing into her school uniform twenty minutes later, sounds from beyond her door finally began to register. Riley froze and strained to listen. As she recognized her dad’s voice, the aroma of cinnamon and french toast penetrated her senses. With a confused shake of her head Riley pulled open her bedroom door, something else that was off from her norm. Every morning her dad would open her bedroom door so Ascher, their German Shepherd could enter at will. The sight that greeted her across the open space made her smile. Her dad had his back to her, focusing on the food on the stove as well as the phone he held to his ear. A yelp and the sound of claws clicking on the floor told her Ascher had noticed her. “Morning Ash…looks like we both got our wish this morning huh.” Riley gave the dog a couple of good ear scratches and a kiss on the head before she moved to sit at the breakfast counter.
She was startled a moment later when a full plate of food appeared on the counter in front of her. A deep chuckle reached her ears followed by a light kiss to her temple. “Morning sweetheart. Grandma says hello too.”
“What - Why are you still home?” Riley asked as she finally looked up and took in her dad as he loaded up another plate of french toast. “Not that I’m not happy to have a real breakfast and all. Just…this is rare.”
“I rearranged my day. Only a couple client meetings on the schedule so I can get a later start and I’ll be finished early. We have a dinner date at Simone’s tonight after your game. You don’t think I’d miss watching you start in your first varsity game of your high school years did you? The only freshman to make the team. I’m proud of you kid.”
