4/20/2016 Fun Fact
Love avocados?
If so, this is your week! This week I’ll tell you about the history of the avocado/aguacate!
Upon looking up the avocado, I found that this fatty fruit has gone by many different names throughout history, thanks to language barriers and the ancient inability of people to properly remember foreign words~
Since age of cultivation in the Americas: Aztec- aoacatl(old word) /ahuacatl (modern translation) This word came from the Aztec word for testicle, given the outer appearance of the fruit. Avocados were said to have aphrodisiac qualities as well.
Between 1450-1475: Inca- palta “Tupac Inca Yupanqui marched to the province of Canari, and on the road he conquered another called Palta, whence they brought to the warm valley near Cuzco the wholesome and delicious fruit called Palta."
Between 1532-1550: Conquistador Pedro do Cieza de Leon- aguacate The Spaniards apparently could not pronounce the Aztec “ahuacatl” and rewrote the name, which has remained the same in the Spanish language today.
1589: First English mentioning of this food by an English merchant named Hawkes - alvacata
1696: Sir Hans Sloane, distinguished naturalist, referred to it as "The Avocado or Alligator Pear-Tree. It grows in gardens and fields throughout Jamaica."
1751: George Washington referred to them as agovago pears
Early 1900′s: The U.S. Department of Agriculture sent out a nation-wide survey to settle on one name for this fruit, and the general acceptance was avocado.

According to Latina magazine, Mexico could be hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2026!
Their news article posted today noted that while we won’t know until May, there have been reports that Mexico’s renovated stadiums in Monterrey, Guadalajara, Torreón, Puebla and Toluca are all potential candidates for what would be one of the biggest events for the international sports community. Mexico hasn’t hosted a World Cup since 1986.

Fun Facts 4/6/2016
This week’s fun facts center on Puerto Rico!
Puerto Rico, a beautiful island about 1000 miles away from the coast of Florida, has been a United States territory since 1899.
As of the 1950′s, Puerto Rico has been recognized as a commonwealth, but that doesn’t affect its status as a territory. Puerto Rican citizens are also considered United States citizens, despite the confusion of many mainland American citizens.
There have been multiple debates on whether to grant PR statehood, but as of today that has yet to occur. The territory is currently facing a debt crisis, which has become more widely discussed by some presidential candidates and news outlets within the past year.
Puerto Rico is the birthplace of many genres of music like bomba, plena, reggaeton, and has had huge influences on salsa and bolero.

Fun Fact - 3/30/2016
This week, we look at some fun facts about the Dominican Rupublic (República Dominicana).
It is documented as the first country in the Americas, which is dated to when Christopher Columbus first visited the island in 1492 (even though we know that there were pre-existing nations in the Americas prior to the European explorers’ journeys to these continents)
The population is 95% Roman Catholic, and the country has the first cathedral built in the Americas (La Catedral de Santa Maria La Menor)
The Dominican Republic has the only national flag with a bible on it
Both bachata and merengue originate from the Dominican Republic.

Fun Fact - 3/23/2016
This week focuses on Cancun, a popular spring break location located on the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico.
According to a recent article posted by Fusion, the people of Cancun expect approximately $75 million in revenue this year from tourists spending on hotels, food, drinks, and other activities. [1]
Major efforts to make Cancun a tourist destination began in 1974 [2]. The Mexican government reportedly funded the first hotels to be built.
As for the name, the Mayan pronunciation “kaan-kun” means “throne of the snakes” [3]
