An open-ended, mysterious, and luscious illustration for your enjoyment. :)
“Fort Night” inspired by: “Making forts, inside and out!” - Memory from the jar, Scandinavian Festival art show, 2014
The story of the “memory jar”
At my last art show, I wanted to reach out and somehow connect with the people viewing my work. With a little courage and apprehension fighting each other in my head, I put a slit in the top of a jar, filled a cup with papers, and made a sign that said “Share a story with me! Write down your favorite childhood memory and put it in the jar. Thank you!” and put it with my work…
The response was incredible.
By the time the four days of the show were over, the jar was packed!! I was blessed beyond blessed, and I couldn’t wait to bring the jar home and open it to read all of the treasures inside. When I did, I was overwhelmed with the power behind this collection of little papers…
There were so many beautiful memories, inspiring stories, and words of encouragement about my art. I learned that the simple act of sharing memories is a powerful way of connecting to one another. I also learned that having courage, being curious, and taking initiative is also amazingly powerful. I now have a huge collection of stories to daydream about, sketch, and hopefully illustrate. That is what I’m going to do – a series of paintings inspired by the fond memories of these willing-to-share strangers. “Fort Night” is the first painting in the “Memory Jar Series”. More to come!! :D
Braids
This one was filled with experimentation with lighting and figuring out how to make a detailed and dynamic painting with a very limited palette. It brought plenty of crazy challenges along the way, but I’m happy with it. :)
Have a fantastic day everyone!
Brisk air and fluffy leaves!
I just love sunny days in Fall... It made me smile to paint this one. :)
The Fafnir hunt...
Happy Fall, everyone! :)
Touch...
This picture was requested by a couple for their baby girl's nursery. I had fun experimenting with different colors in this one. :)
The Junction City Scandinavian Festival is in full swing this weekend and I'm showing my work in the art show! :D
This is the first time I've had these canvas wrap prints made, and I'm so very happy with how they turned out! I will be offering them for sale in one of the local coffee shops as well as my Etsy shop soon, so stay tuned!!
Note: THANK YOU to everyone who came and supported me with your encouraging words, your fun stories, and of course, your purchases! :)
I had cards of my artwork printed! Moo.com did such an awesome job! They look and feel amazing!
I will be putting these in my Etsy shop soon. I'll keep you posted! :)
** Note: For those of you who were at the Junction City Scandinavian Festival and weren't able to get the cards you wanted, please send me an email at [email protected] and let me know. I will be getting another order in soon, and I will let you know when they will be available! Thank you! :)
The morning climb.
I originally painted this image with watercolors, but I didn't quite like how it turned out. I decided to see if I could make a better version with Sketchbook Pro. I like the digital version better. :)
The carefree days of summer...
I had a lot of fun making this one. :)
Taking in the day...
Cross the bridge... Adventure awaits!
Playing with more textures in Sketchbook Pro. :) I discovered that some wonderful and generous artists like to make custom texture brushes for SBP and share them with other artists to download and use. So cool! This just keeps getting more and more fun. ^_^
I am going to be leading a chalk doodling workshop for the Creative Worship Conference in May. I’m getting really excited!! :D
Here’s a little video interview I did for the conference. We had a lot of fun shooting it. All these kids showed up and started drawing with me and getting excited to make big designs. :)
Fireflies...
This was a sketch I originally did in good ol' facebook graffiti. I liked it so much I decided to see if I could make it into a finished piece in Sketchbook Pro. I'm really happy with how it turned out. :)
The new sketchbook.
Sometimes a picture has awkward parts, and you try to fix them only to have more problems. This picture represents days of changing, fixing, messing things up and starting over, and then ultimately saying, "good enough, let's do something else now." I've decided to share this picture because I like parts of it, and because for me, a picture isn't truly "finished" until I share it with the world. To all you fellow artists out there: remember, it's OK to make imperfect art, stuff you're not all that happy with, and it's ok to leave it alone and move on to better things. It's all a big learning process, and there will be plenty of stuff ahead that you will be proud of if you keep working at it.
