The mirrorless conundrum
This whole mirrorless thing is a really exciting development in photography. As someone who travels, hikes and does street photography DSLRs are extremely bulky and heavy. Even my Canon Rebel feels like an enormous weight. Having a camera in my bag all the time is a goal but it means that my bag is often unmanageable.
I was really excited to learn about the mirrorless trend. Lighter potentially cheaper cameras with the same quality. Sadly it’s not that simple.
I have a Sony Cybershot. My first ever digital camera in junior high was a Sony Cybershot. Other than a tragic incident involving my sister and her hand ramming into it to get me to stop taking pictures of her both cameras have worked wonderfully.
When I did the Trans Sib I opted for my Cybershot because I couldn’t imagine carrying around a DSLR and everything that went with it. When I travel I have my bag down to as little as possible often leaving out a change of clothes on short trips. I travel as light as humanly possible.
I am very tempted by the Sony mirrorless cameras, which are basically a DSLR substitute replacement. The downside is that depending on the lens they aren’t actually that much lighter than a DSLR. Their 24–70mm f.2.8 is actually heavier than the Canon one. So you end up paying way more for lenses without a significant weight savings. I’m already tied in to Canon so if I switch it has to be something a lot lighter and preferably cheaper.
Today I was at the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival for a few events and stopped by the Camera Store table. It’s always fun to ogle things. One of the cameras they had is the Panasonic GM5, which is 211g. That is basically a Sony Cybershot with a 16megapixel sensor and micro 4/3 lenses. It is a very attractive camera in that I could gladly venture anywhere with it and not notice a thing. My wrists would thank me.
I thought the Panasonic GM5 was the answer and I was ready to jump on that ship. Sadly it seems that the camera is being discontinued with no replacement plan. There are some other relatively light micro 4/3 bodies out there (around 350–400g) but nowhere near the small design of the GM5. I don’t want to jump on a sinking ship and invest in useless gear but I also don’t think there’s a good answer to this question. The upside of micro 4/3 is that I can use lots of lenses and I can switch to Olympus later if I want to. It’s a lot more flexible than the unique mounts other brands use.
Have any of you had a Panasonic GM5? What does the future of micro 4/3 cameras look like? Do you know anything about what Panasonic has planned next?

United Way Rouge party
A few years ago I participated in the Urban Exposure Project (UEP) with the United Way. It is a part of their GenNext campaign that seeks to get young people involved with charity and giving back. The program used photography to explore social issues and poverty in Calgary. It was really interesting and is still running if you are a young photographer who is thinking to yourself sign me up. (I did it because I knew someone who had done it the year before me and was filled with jealously that they had the opportunity to go take cool photos and I didn’t.)
I’ve been looking for volunteer photography opportunities because they’re interesting, a way to give back and a good way to improve my photography. I reached out to the United Way as a followup to UEP and asked if they needed any volunteer photographers. They asked if I wanted to do their GenNext Rouge party.
It was a lot of fun and a nice contrast to where I was six months ago when I showed up at my first event photography gig. I have come a long way and can now confidently say I know how to do flash photography at events. I have figured out the shutter speed to use and that I need a lens hood to prevent glare. I had someone explain autofocus setting to me — it’s hard to have things properly in focus when shooting flash with a low aperture. Now I feel like I know what I’m doing. Another person let me crash an event they were doing and explained their approach to composition and the shots they try to get at events.
I am pleased as punch to have this really valuable skill. If it wasn’t for PhotoSoc I wouldn’t be where I am. PhotoSoc gave me the chance to go to events and totally mess up and not have a clue. I was working for free and a student so it was okay. Now that I have a few under my belt I can confidently walk into an event and say I’ve got this. It’s hard breaking into this world because what you need is chances to learn and chances to fail. What young people need more than anything is to be given opportunities. Most of the time it feels like I’m kicking at a wall begging to be given any chance. Sometimes I get them and I’m grateful for that. If you think millennials or young creatives are lazy think again. We’re working our tails off trying to find any opening we can get.
A wise woman
I am sorry for the lack of action recently. I got my wisdom teeth out so I haven’t been out taking photos. I plan to go out today and wander around Centre Street, the section between 20th and the Centre Street Church. This street is in the process of being transformed by the Green Line and has lots of interesting buildings.

CIFF (otherwise known as the Calgary International Film Festival) is now over. I signed up to volunteer as a photographer and was fortunate to be accepted. It’s a nice thumbs up to my photography skills and how I’ve grown through all the events I had the opportunity to shoot through PhotoSoc. I had a blast photographing a couple of events as well as a lineup and some preshow performers. I’m a bit exhausted from trying to squeeze in lots of films but had a blast.
