Inform of spatial information and environment through non-verbal audio
The primary of the research is focus at an ability of communication of sound to human perception. The aim is enhance sound as an element to communicate the user of spatial information in a non verbal form. The research is looking at sound theory and exploring different sound techniques that can portray and symbolise spatial dimension and environment.
This is, firstly, research on a sound techniques theory in range of case study and literature. It will research on a different techniques of sound, those that used by various industry, in particular to one that propose for informing spatial information. The research will also involve a case study on sound navigation aid for the visual impair to get an idea on how sound could be simulated to inform and lead persons, who has sound as their primary sense of perceiving the space, through space. In order to understand and develop, the is involve an experiment of sound along with researching.
“Speaking Space” is a research and development project on sound communication in relation with spatial information. The project is researched on sound ability of communicating to interact with human spatial perception. The aim is to explore a possibility to portray spatial information to the user through the use of different sound techniques in a form of non verbal auditory. Sound has an incredible potential particularly in term of communication, though in a non verbal form, because of it flexible and adjustable of the techniques. The research therefore seek to explore different sound techniques that has a potential of portraying and symbolising space and environment.
This research explore an idea of communicate through sound in the concept of primary sense of spatial perception is not seeing but hearing. It attempts to investigate a way to propose that sound is a great communicator for spatial information that one could perceived through, no less than seeing. In doing so, the research is also required self-experiment along with the study. Therefore it will include an experiment work, of playing with different sound techniques and how people interact with it, of the researcher in the content.
Sound is a significant communication system that requires an ability of hearing, which is a secondary sense of perception of human through ears. Ears is compared as a human third eyes, it is a satellite that receives the information and send them to brain, which is a computer, that calculate result to human perception. This is a function of hearing perception.

Sound is create from the vibration that needs a molecule in space to survive, due in a vacuum space we will not be able to hear any sound generated. Sound can be generated through natural or artifactual. Natural sound is a generate of an object when sound thing action to its surface. Artifactual sound is a process when an affect or additional techniques is added to an original sound.
The tone of sound is depended on the frequency of the vibration and the vibration create a sound wave. The high frequency of vibration creates a higher sound pitch, when the vibration is in low range, it will generate low frequency sound wave. Thinking about playing a guitar, the heaviest string will generate a lower tone of sound in opposite to the thinnest string that creates a higher sound pitch. This is due to the flexibility of the sound generator or object. Therefore, for artifactual sound volume and tone are depend on the setting of the vibration, for a natural sound it is depends on the flexibility of an object’s surface.
Human can take 20 hz to 20,000 hz which the frequency above or below it will be over human listening ability.
The volumn of the sound portray the information of the distance. The louder we hear to closer we know we are to thing. The travel of sound is sound wave, and sound wave can travel up to a certain distance and fade and disappear. The distance of sound is depended on the frequency of vibration (loudness).
“ Like we use our eyes to see in 3 dimension (Binocular), in this way, we use our ear to hear in 3 dimension, which is call Binaural. The science of binaural techniques involve arrival, loudness and frequency range or times of sound.
The binaural is a techniques of through the perceiving of sound from either side of ear, we can define the direction of the sound. It is because the arrival of the sound from it’s direction will get into the closer ear and pass through the other. The distance of sound travel from one side of ear to the other will lower the noise down, thus the different volumes of sound that we hear tells the direction of the sound.
Therefore, the science of binaural techniques required the sound to travel in horizontal, so the sound travel of one side of ear to the other. If the sound is arrived in vertical, top or facing toward, the sound will arrive into both ear at the same time.

An idea of using a natural recorded soundscape
: Recording a surrounding soundscape such as rain, wind, door etc and collage them to a space form.
An idea of creating an artifactual sound that simulated a natural soundscape.
: Artifactual creating a sound simulated of natural soundscape and collage them to a story/space form.
Another theme of sound create perception of space by using human perception of sound to create a perception/image of their immediate space and environment in their brain map/perception/imagination.
