The skull of a two headed calf.
I went back and visited an old friend
Two carcasses on the way home and you’re still shaking from the thrill of it. These days you feel alive— maybe in contrast, maybe not— and pulling over never felt so exhilarating as when you’ve got remains of something bloody filling your vision.
It’s on the road ahead of you, far enough that you’ve got room to slow down, to pull over, stop your car. Hazards on, heart beating like a panicked animal. You’re not scared though, not by this. You’re just alive.
The first one is a possum. Middle of the road, mouth a mess of teeth and blood. You don’t touch it because you never do, but you look for longer than maybe you should.
Second one’s a deer, pulled off into the grass, stomach ripped open. Guts lying round it like decoration. You think it’s beautiful.
There’s sweat in your eyes, walking back to your car, and a shudder of frisson shakes through you. You’re not scared by this. You’re just alive.
