holden did plenty for his sister-in-law and her kids. his relationship with his brother had never been great, even before the bastard went to prison... but he felt some kind of responsibility to step up when his brother failed. nobody else should pay the price for his brother's stupidity. his parents had agreed. there wasn't much money to go around, so holden became the free handyman, babysitter, you name it. he had given up the better part of his twenties to make sure there was a strong male role model for january and her siblings to look up to. and he didn't ask for much in return... just for use of the house when he wanted to have a get together with his buddies because his apartment was too small for it. it was a shame that january had turned into a real brat. all girls went through some sort of rebellious phase but that was usually a teenage thing. january was a grown woman. she should know better than to complain when she was still living at home for free. holden didn't blame his sister-in-law for how his niece was turning out... not completely... but he was starting to think that she still hadn't done a damn thing about it. example a was sitting right in front of him. the light buzz he had going on wasn't enough to keep him from feeling irritated. it was one thing to act up in front of him... but to do it in front of guests? no fucking way. ❝so this is how it's gonna be? huh?❞ holden just stared at her. his jaw ticked. no answer. that wasn't going to work for him. he grabbed her jaw and tilted her head up so she had to look at him. ❝you wanna apologize to me and our guests? i think we can move on and have ourselves a nice evening if that happens.❞

IT FELT LIKE EVERYTHING WENT TO SHIT at the same time. first, his girlfriend of three years weaned him out of her life while by ignoring his calls until she let him down ' easy, ' then he was laid off and couldn't afford rent... so back home it was.
