Silicone prosthetics - Dorset Orthopaedic 2007 - 2010

Here are some examples of legs and feet sculpted whilst working for Dorset Orthopaedics.  The colours for each prosthesis are mixed by hand to match the patients skin tones and sculpted in a silicone clay.  The foot is made as a mirror image of their remaining appendage, or chosen from a library of foot casts in bi-lateral cases.

Wrist orthoses - Sophies Minde 2010 - 2014

Wrist supports reinforced with pre-preg carbon fibre blades to restrict movement.  Velcro fastenings built into the silicone or leather straps with poppers for easy cleaning. Silicone devices can be sterilised in boiling water.

I inadvertently created quite a stir in the Norwegian media in February 2012.  One of the severed fingers that I made in my last week at Dorset Orthopaedics was borrowed for a youth club halloween party and went missing… only to turn up in the snow on a busy Oslo street. The police closed off two streets incase there was a body accompanying the finger and collected it in a ice box.  It took the police forensics three hours to find out that it was a fake. I´ll take that as a compliment.  They would’t let me keep the evidence bag.

Wedding figures - 2010-2014

Wing instillation - The University of Northampton 2003

Based on the anatomy of a bats wing and the mechanism of an umbrella arm.  Made of salvaged metal, bicycle parts and tights.  Donated it to the university by request.  I very much doubt that it is still there.

Silicone boxing glove - Sophies Minde 2013

Training prosthesis for boxing and assault courses.  A thick gel pad cushions the sensitive arm stump from impacts and a thick skin of harder silicone  keeps the gel from tearing.
