Im Very Pleased to share this website my partner directed me to. You’re interested in retro techand/or robotics, The Old Robots is a unique and surprisingly thorough archive of all sorts of real robots from as early as the 1940’s to as late as the 2000’s. I especially love the dated nature of its aesthetics. But, seriously- there’s pages and pages worth of these robots. Many robots also include videos embedded in the site to show them in action.

An excellent resource for those interested in robotics, the history of robots, robotic toys, or just goofs like me that love to see little funny hard metal and plastic fellas.

stop telling robots they 'pass' as a compliment, passing the turing test is not required from robots for them to be valid, also stop assuming robots even want to pass, it's not the only thing that being a robot is about and is based on anthropocentric standards that you really should be dismantling in the first place

Modular SEA Snake by the Biorobotics laboratory, Carnegie Mellon University (2016). Not a sea-snake as such, but a robot snake using Series Elastic Actuators. Received wisdom is to make actuators, typically a motor and gearbox, as stiff as possible. While this increases precision, it prevents the robot from compliantly adapting to its environment. The Series Elastic Actuator (SEA) trades precision for compliance, incorporating an elastic component with a bit of give - the black rubber rings visible in the photo - in series with the motor. This allows the robotic snake to adjust the stiffness of its body to maintain a constrictor-like grip, and to push against objects in its environment to gain additional traction.

Creepy or adorable? Researchers at Harvard University have demonstrated the first autonomous, untethered, entirely soft robot: the octobot.

Instead of being controlled by electronics, the robot’s logic board is powered by chemical reactions and fluid passing along tiny channels. Scientist have struggled to create completely soft robots because rigid components like circuit boards, power sources and electronic controls are difficult to replace.
