The playbook on how to correct college football & the high rates of sexual assault (Jessica Luther’s “Unsportsmanlike Conduct: College Football & the Politics of Rape”):

How It Could Be:

Play #1: Consent is Cool; Get Some (p. 155)

Luther talks about how important understanding what consent is & how college-aged males & females need to understand what consent means/how it looks.

Play #2: Understand Trauma (p. 164)

Getting over the people’s fascination with rape victims changing their stories & having hidden agendas to try & falsely report to ruin the reputation of others.

Play #3: Go Federal (p. 174)

Each college campus in America has a Title IX Coordinator - all sexual assault claims & cases need to be reported to these individuals.

Play #4: Intervene, Maybe (p. 175)

Talks about the important roles bystanders have in preventing sexual assault, especially when alcohol may be involved.

Play #5: Follow the Players (p. 184)

Details Tyler Perkins, a Canadian college football player who outwardly speaks out against sexual assault in hopes others will follow his lead.

Play #6: Be Specific (p. 187)

Universities need to have detailed plans in place to prevent sexual assault by college students - talking in general terms is not good enough Luther states.

Play #7: Teach Coaches to Teach Boys to Be Men (p. 189)

Coaches need to take their role as leaders serious & mold young players into men both on & off the field. Luther talks about coaches responsibilities to shape & mentor student-athletes to care about them more as people than as players.

Play #8: Clean It Up (p. 196)

Cleaning up the atmosphere of “locker room talk” into one where everybody is respected.

Play #9: Fire People (p. 198)

Fire supervisors who are responsible for young men who commit sexual assault - plain & simple.

Play #10: Do Anything (p. 200)

Putting more responsibility on the NCAA to promote atmosphere where sexual assault is not something that happens.

Play #11: Do Better (p. 204)

The topic of sexual assault needs to stay in the media & be placed above wins/losses. 

Play #12: Calm Down (p. 211)

Fans of college football need to be more concerned about the well-being of students as opposed to on-field performance.

Play #13: Hire Women (p. 214)

More women need to be hired in college football in leadership positions.

Rape is on the most terrible crimes on earth and it happens every few minutes. The problem with groups who deal with rape is that they try to educate women about how to defend themselves. What really needs to be done is teaching men not to rape

WSU student leaders want policy to keep sexual predators out of athletics

Student leaders at Washington State University are demanding a policy that would bar the school’s athletics department from recruiting any athlete who has been convicted of a sex crime.

I wanted to find some information about Washington State University & sexual assault. I found an article written by Chad Sokol of The Spokesman Review where student leaders at WSU proposed a policy that where “a conviction or guilty plea for rape, stalking, domestic violence, sexual assault or sexual harassment would disqualify a person from joining a WSU sports team.”

This is one of the many steps that can be done to help prohibit the spread of sexual assault on campuses nationwide. Author Jessica Luther, spends the 2nd half of her book, “Unsportsmanlike Conduct: College Football & the Politics of Rape,” talking about “How It Could Be” in terms of steps that could be taken to help prevent future sexual assaults from happening involving college football programs and athletes.

Baylor rape scandal involves recruiting ‘hostess’ program. These things still exist?

The NCAA passed a rule to move such groups out of athletic departments in 2004, but recent scandals illustrate their persistence -- and perils.

This article was written by Wilson Hobson & published in The Washington Post. It details how the NCAA put rules in place to ban female recruitment groups but this was obviously not occurring nationwide resulting in the rape of a female host by two Baylor football players. 

In Jessica Luther’s book, “Unsportsmanlike Conduct: College Football & the Politics of Rape,” she mentions schools like Tennessee, Oklahoma State, & Vanderbilt (p. 120-126).

If schools were supposed to give up their all-female recruitment groups or to stop using women in a particular way in recruitment following the revelations at Colorado, some of them apparently did not get the NCAA's memo

Interview with author Jessica Luther by Ric Bratton of TWIA

In this interview, Jessica Luther, author of “Unsportsmanlike Conduct: College Football & the Politics of Rape,” talks with host Ric Bratton about her book and the state of sexual assault in major college football. 

Luther talks about sexual assault incidents at many major college football programs including Florida State (multiple occasions), Navy, Vanderbilt, & Baylor. She discusses the culture of sexual assault on college campuses as well as sexual assault in mainstream America because the interview took place during the controversial 2016 U.S. presidential election. Luther talks about how systemic the problem is on the whole, not just in major college football.
