There might be some (albeit weak, in my opinion) arguments for why Will shouldn’t end up with Mike. If the writers simply always wanted Mike and El and never really intended to explore anything else vis à vis Mike’s and Will’s feeling and they didn’t know how to write a queer storyline then, fine, whatever. I can take the L and move on. But I truly find it baffling and very interesting that the Duffers are solely saying it’s not realistic for Will to end up with his childhood bestfriend/crush after teasing his feelings toward Mike for so long.
For one I think the word ‘crush’ diminishes Will’s feelings but I also really dislike when showrunners/writers/directors adhere to this amorphous term realism when the project their pursuing is so blatantly out-of-this-world. This is a show about twelve year-olds with superpowers and inter-dimensional wormholes, where the power of Kate Bush literally saves people’s lives. I understand that there must be something inherently empathetic about a character’s journey and to this extent a skew toward the realistic will always need to exist in some form. Your characters have to be relatable (at least the ones you’re supposed to root for)!
But it’s not just that. It’s what makes musicals, high fantasy and Harry Potter and sci-fi so enthralling for so many people—it’s the humanity behind their themes. Will not having his feelings reciprocated by Mike is at once realistic, sure, I can admit that; but it’s also just a mean-spirited story. A story devoid of hope. A story where Will’s arc of self-love and acceptance will not ring as true or be as meaningful because it’s such a sore thumb: Will is blatantly being treated differently because he’s queer; his love storyline is not realistic insofar as it’s queer and only queer. And that’s it. That’s the meat and potatoes of it all.
And the proof of this? Gender swap Will and you have a completely different story. Something ‘realistic’ according to Stranger Things, apparently.
The thing about the boyfriend it is that it was a bunch of people panicking based on house keys and mil*ven shippers trying to sway us.
Narrative wise, it makes no sense. Volume 1 was the set up. The Duffers have shown to be capable of closing down arcs regardless of people's thoughts on how well they were closed but all of them have fit the theme and have made sense.
The boyfriend doesn't, even if is a thinking exercise. Will can't stop the Mindflayer with the power of friendship and rejection, if Henry and Patty's love wasn't enough something has to be.
Henry is the story that went wrong and Will is paralleled to him countless times, is almost like Henry targeted someone like him all along. TFS deals with love overcoming fear. Fear = the Mindflayer = fear of rejection and of the world.
How is he supposed to do that with rejection? It doesn't fit with the theme of the show. Self love won't be enough, and it also makes me wonder how he went from asking Robin about how she got to be with Vickie and then suddenly he switched up because that had to have been about Mike.
So is not adding up so far.
I have no comment here. Just total agreement.
It seems as though they’re setting it up so that Will’s self-love/self-acceptance might be how he overcomes Vecna. I don’t like it but I can see them doing that. It’s the easiest route to take. I suppose, alternatively, it could that Mike and his true love for him and each other could be what lifts Will (and Henry even) to overcome Mindflayer since Will has already had his queerness accepted by the group now. So the only piece of the puzzle remaining is Mike. Now Mike is the difference maker. That’s what the big Bylers want.
Ugh. Idk.

the fact that most (young) internet users’ politics boils down to “whatever is popular online” for over a decade at this point is not lost on me, and also not on the people who exploit it.
people need to be angrier that a terror organization is appropriating and profiteering off of their social causes and the "kindness of their heart". like why aren't you mad? they're literally using you

Oppressed people do not have carte blanche to commit atrocities. It’s not that hard.
This is the exact Zionist language Noah used in his post that is so reprehensible for its binary logic that ends in total destruction for the people in Gaza. This is why people are criticizing him, using IDF terrorist language as a guise to build support for military action against people being trapt in a large prison camp with only two exits. One is shut down and the other was recently bombed and only lets in 400 people a day at most into Egypt through their immigration process. His ignorance should not have to be explained to people for them to stop defending him. People are being pressured with death threats to leave Gaza for a reason, it’s so Israeli forces can take control and gain sovereignty over the area. It’s textbook ethnic cleansing.
Palestine was never a state. It’s not their land.
