Story time

So I have a story I want to tell: when I was in 2nd or 3rd grade I was so incredibly shy. I can remember having one best friend and not really talking to anyone else. I clung to that friend. (Probably to the point of annoyance for her) This made me a very easy target for teasing, which didn't help my shyness. I wouldn't raise my hand in class, even if I had to go to the bathroom, I avoided anything that would bring attention to me. So one day during music class I followed my best friend to where she sang in the soprano section. And let me tell you, soprano I am not. My music teacher noticed my struggling and asked me to stand up, in front of the whole class! He told me I would do better as an alto and asked me to move clear across the room, away from the one person I felt comfortable with. I made my way carefully through the kids sitting cross legged on the floor (because we didn't have any chairs) and in my head freaking out about where to sit, already planning on going far to the back as possible. When suddenly one little girl caught my attention, smiling and waving me over to a spot beside her! I was saved! We became friends and stayed that way all through school. We don't talk now but I am friends with her on Facebook. She probably doesn't remember that small gesture she did but for me it was so grand that I still remember it almost 20 years later. It just goes to show you that even the smallest gestures can make you a hero.
