I’ve always been rather drawn to the idea of a traditional, old-timey wedding. The kind where they live happily ever after and such. I am neither a religious person nor particularly fond of crowds, yet everything else about them holds such an inescapable appeal.

The ceremony of it all. The devotion. The sanctity. A sort of raw emotion that does not often exist elsewhere. The idea is intoxicating to me.

The hopeless romantic in me dreams that one day I might see the love of my life walking down the aisle, adorned in one of those beautiful white dresses. Even if the whole church is empty and it is just us two. Especially if it is just us two.

Yet, the dark romantic in me dreams of something different.

Despite my general irreverence towards religion, I have begun to appreciate those who romanticize it. Most of all, however, I have been enchanted by those who make their partner their religion. Worship, mutual worship especially, is something I find incredibly hot. It is about as intense as love and romance can be. The peak of devotion.

But what of the depths of devotion?

Is sacrifice not a central part of religion? What else is love made up of if not small acts of sacrifice? What then, is a grand act of sacrifice?

There’s this fantasy I keep replaying in my head.

Of her, walking down the aisle in the same beautiful dress she wore so many years ago. Through the empty pews of the same decrepit church where we once swore our vows. The sun shines through stained glass onto her face, perfectly framing her beauty. The sparkle in her eye is still there.

Silently, I watch as she joins me at the altar and I take her hand in mine. I help her as she wordlessly gets down onto her knees, taking great care not to trample the dress. Neither of us says anything. What else is there left to say?

I brush a strand of hair from her face and step behind her. She tilts her head up to look at me and smiles. I can’t help but smile too. Caressing her face with my hand, I take the knife I’ve been holding in the other and run it across her throat. Watching the blood spray out across the altar.

I kneel down, taking hold of her, and gently lower her into my lap as her body loses strength. Wiping the tears from her eyes while she struggles through the pain. Her agonized gurgles turning quiet. I watch the blood spurt from the gash in her throat slower and slower as her heartbeat grows weaker. The blood spreads over her pure white dress, staining it forever crimson.

I stay with her until she begins to grow cold. I would die with her there, lest someone find us like that. Not yet. I will take care of her in death, as I did in life. Death is not one to do us part. My vows are not so easily broken.

That is what an act of love is to me.

That is the depth of devotion to me.

It’s a shame the dominant masochist / submissive sadist dynamic isn’t more popular. I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately.
