Caramel Coffee Cup Cake
thetruthissixfeetunder:
with: @romanmcnulty location: red velvet bakery
ever since she’d stopped by the red velvet baker for the first time, she’d been craving that freshly baked bread with a fierceness she hadn’t felt since the last time she’d stopped back at her mama’s place for thanksgiving. so, after yet another failed job application, hathor found herself walking the admittedly long walk to that blessed bakery. of course, this time she actually checked to make sure it was open before she opened the door.
once inside, hathor sighed in happiness at that sweet sweet freshly baked goods smell hit her nose. with a salivating mouth and grumbling stomach, she approached the counter with hopefully more poise than she currently felt. couldn’t hurt to see if Anna needed another taste testing.
“Hello!”
Roman was a naturally early riser -- that, or he hadn’t slept well at all -- thanks to his time in the military, so he was usually one of the first people in the bakery in the morning, getting a head start on getting all of the goodies they needed for the day started, particularly some of the breads and bagels that they served to those who stopped in in the morning on their way in to work. He heard the bell ding over the door and made his way up from the kitchen to the front, warm smile on his face as he greeted the woman on the other side of the counter. “Morning! What can I get for you today? You’re one of the first people to stop by, so lucky for you, we’ve still got a little bit of everything.”

The bakery had always meant far more to Anna than a simple income. It was her bread and butter, but it was also so much more, so she made sure to fill it with people who loved it as much as she did. People like Roman and Andy. Hearing them speak made her feel like she had left it with the right people who wouldn’t let it down. “Of course it’s our bakery, I mean— you give blood, sweat and sometimes embarrassing tears for this place, you should one thousand percent consider as yours, too,” she looked between the two of them and listened attentively as they laid out what they had for the next few weeks. She agreed with Andy, it was a good thing their team was complete before Valentine’s day, because that was always a busy time for them. “Wow— looks like we’re gonna be pullin’ our weight around here and takin’ more hours than we’re supposed to for the next few weeks, won’t we? I hope it’s okay with both of you?” Anna grinned, her distraction was welcomed, but she wasn’t sure they wanted to be cooped up inside the bakery until odd hours every day. “And Roman, we are definitely goin’ to do that, it’s a great idea, giant,” she teased, “we can figure out some daily trips to the farmer’s market for fresh strawberries, so we don’t run out of them. It’s really good to be back, you guys, I feel like my limbs are all complete now and I’ve been ready to work for so long. How’s the last few weeks been?” @andy-asal
“Fine with me, nowhere else I’d rather be honestly,” they replied with a shrug. They had come to Edens not necessarily for a new start but just for a new place and to work. As far as they were concerned they could spend all their time in the bakery and not really ever see it as work. “Strawberries though, we need some like..cold packaging to keep the chocolate hard around them when we deliver them. That’s what uh Sherrie’s Berrie’s does and I mean they’re like the king of chocolate covered strawberries. Delivering melted strawberries is so not a good look.” Andy leaned over and kissed Anna’s cheek one more time before going over to wash their hands and start on some of the orders. “Honestly not bad, a little busy, lot of people sending their best wishes. A little nosey too but Roman took good care of that with a little bit of muscle flex and sweetness. Though Ella did curse some guy out last week, good to see she’s taking a break though,” they added with a soft laugh, always a little intimidated, in awe and slightly turned on whenever the middle Cooper sister was around. Oh and Devon Reynolds came by here like daily and bought a bunch of cinnamon rolls, I think that guy has a bit of a problem but speaking of problems, I may or may not have been feeding the stray cat out back and now..there are three stray cats…” @romanmcnulty
"I’m sure we can come up with something like that. Maybe some insulated bags at least for transport, but as for the packaging itself, we may need to see if we can find something online. Ideally something sustainable, but whatever’s available,” Roman mused allowed, making his way back behind the counter so he could find a pad and pencil to scratch out some notes off of what they both said. This was why they all worked so well together, being able to bounce ideas off one another and building something wonderful together. “There were a ton of cinnamon rolls,” Roman laughed, though he turned his gaze to Andy at their confession. “See, that explains why there’s been so much meowing out back anytime Jax and I are loading up the truck.” He shook his head and looked over at Anna. “Sounds like we’ve got ourselves some Red Velvet mascots, though Rufio’s going to be upset we replaced him.”
wbronson:
Roman’s recap of his holidays made Bull’s holiday season seem to be filled to the brim with vanity and petty bullshit… which, well, it had been filled with both of those things; however, it was merely enhanced with Roman’s pure holiday season. It had been quite some time since Bull had been hands-on with any type of volunteer work that was outside of doing extra things around the rink. The most recent significant thing he had been involved with outside of hockey was a donation but that wasn’t volunteering. That was just writing a check to feel better about one’s self. Bull took a drink from his water bottle and wiped his mouth as Roman offered for him to join in on doing some beach clean-up. It seemed like a good excuse to finally do something good with the added bonus of it being on the beach, cold or not. “Hey, that sounds amazing, man.” He said with a sure nod, “Let me know the next time you’re out there and I’ll definitely join you.” A wide smile graced his face then as he peeked at his watch for a moment, a text coming through with the schedule for little-kid hockey. “Yeah, the sixteen-year-olds are… wow, a lot. I guess I was probably like that too but, damn, they’re way more advanced than I ever was with the amount of bullshit they try to pull.” Bull laughed, “The little ones are way better, like… the innocence is at least there. They aren’t talking about “getting ass” in the locker room.”
"I’ll be sure to let you know. I’m thinking this upcoming weekend since I hear the weather’s supposed to warm up to the sixties -- but climate change isn’t real, right?” Roman snorted some, shaking his head before taking another swig from his water bottle to set it aside. “Yeah, I think having access to the internet’s definitely made teenagers progress further at a younger age than we ever did. I see girls who are barely teenagers all done up with contouring trying to look like those models you see on Instagram and it’s sad that sort of beauty standard pressure’s starting so young, y’know? Not to mention the guys thinking that’s an invitation to start being... well, gross, for lack of a better word. You ever have to knock some sense into the older ones when they start mouthing off about that stuff?”
adshea:
Adrien laughed before nodding in agreement with Roman’s statement about the loudness of Chopped. The show was definitely entertaining but it also did seem like everyone was out there making the same obnoxious mistake. “Well, if you ever do go on Chopped… just don’t use the ice cream machine,” Adrien joked before leaning down to urge Rufio to come over so she could give him some attention before breakfast. “Probably tea today,” she said after a moment of thinking. “Coffee gets me too cranked and I have nothing else to do today,” Adrien said with a laugh before standing back up and rubbing Rufio’s head. “Yes I see you,” she said as Rufio leaned in, “I know, Roman doesn’t give you enough love, huh? He doesn’t pay attention to you. You’re basically abused, right?” She asked as she watched the dog and scratched behind his ears. “I see you’ve been starving him of love, obviously,” she joked. “Look at that… the only dog that doesn’t give me a headache.”
Roman’s laughter filled the kitchen at Adrien’s comments towards Rufio as he set about making some tea for the both of them, then going through each of the items he’d made to put a plate together for her. “We did a lot of training classes to make that happen. Not that he was ever a bad dog, but he has a tendency of getting a little... energetic and overly excited around new people.” He’d originally gotten Rufio with the intention of having him trained into a service animal at his therapist’s insistence, but just having the companionship had proven to be as big a help as anything. “Here you are. Sit wherever you’d like and I’ll come join you once this tea’s ready.” He motioned towards the kettle simmering. “Don’t have any work to do today? I remember you mentioning you were going to start looking into getting back into it again. You ever make the leap?”
jennaxcooper:
“I know… she is already so loved. I just… once we’re home then maybe I will believe it can be a happy ending” but whilst here, she was still so scared it would all go wrong, even if this time it was her health that was the problem. “I think a lot of them are angry with me to be fair. But now that is a sight I have to see. Although… are you doing it to get the girls?” she teased, even if she did really want to see that now. “Nate? I don’t think he’s left the hospital. I sent him home to take a shower because… well he needed one”.
"Well, you’ve still got a little time before then, but I’m sure it’ll happen sooner than you think,” Roman reassured her, patting the back of her hand gently as the smile stayed on his face. He could understand why Jenna’s sisters would be upset, given the circumstances. He also knew that Ella especially tended to have a temper, but one thing about the Cooper sisters that he’d come to realize over his time in Edens was that they stuck together, no matter what. They’d come around, he was sure of it. “Well, good. I understand the desire to be here for you both and to take care of you, but there’s only so much we can do and he needs to look out for himself just as much. Especially since when you get this little one home, I’m gonna bet there won’t be a whole lot of sleep or frequent personal hygiene happening.”
levi-mccoy:
“Eh you may be on your way but we’ll see about that, you might just have the jaw for it. Yeah I mean no rush, I can’t even imagine what that place is like on Valentine’s Day. Do you guys have any horror stories? Uh well I’m always trying to find new stuff to do for the kids, either at the school or the rec center. I don’t know man, I spent a lot of time at the center and here growing up. If I wasn’t with Chase I was by myself and I guess I’m just thinking of all the things we had to learn on our own that someone could have taught us. Lot of my kids are either in the system or got single parents or just shitty parents so I want to make sure they have things to prepare them for the world, you know?” He hit the puck and got it in, smiling soon after before laughing as Roman scored on him. “Nice one. You really learned on Youtube and shit? That’s impressive dude.”
"It’s like a tornado hit around most holidays, but this year was especially tough since Anna wasn’t around as much to help out.” He understood why and he absolutely did not fault her for the choice of protecting herself; Roman would have encouraged her to do the same, especially since he was confident in both his,Andy’s, and Jax’s ability to keep the wheels greased. He nodded as he listened, continuing to hit the puck -- perhaps a bit too aggressively, but that was Roman’s natural competitive nature coming through -- and turning his attention to him. “It’s good these kids have someone like you in their lives as a constant, something stable they can count on to always be there. You know if you ever need any help, even outside of baking, let me know. I’m pretty athletic myself.” He chuckled. “Yeah, most of it. I took a few baking classes at first, but found a ton of tutorials for things on YouTube and figured I’d be less embarrassed of failing abysmally in my own kitchen instead of in front of a bunch of seasoned baking vets,” he laughed. “Had my sister do all the taste tests with me and she helped me narrow things down to what I was best at. Turns out cakes are my forte.”
magdalenasanticgo:
She needed to tell him… right? The man had a daughter and against all odds of the universe, they met one another again. Mia was a lot like him… sand blonde hair and the same blue eyes. She had her mother’s nose and her pissed off face, but there was about no denying that the rest was all Roman. Roman… finally she had a name. If she had one before, she would have sought him out, she would have shared the news and maybe he wouldn’t have missed so much, but it was funny how the world worked, he said small world, Magdalena thought it was too big. They should have crossed paths sooner. Way sooner. “Magdalena, but you can call me Mag, or Maggie.” Now that his name had saturated in her mind, the woman came to another realization that further proved how fate worked in wicked ways. “You’re not Andy Asal’s co-worker Roman by any chance… are you?”
At the mention of his co-worker and friend, Roman had to say he was even more surprised. How likely was it that these two souls would have met hundreds of miles away from this small town and yet they somehow managed to find each other again right here, let alone the fact that they seemed to have mutual friends? How had they not met sooner? “I am, yeah... I assume you know them?” He couldn’t help the chuckle that fell from him as he tried to process all of this. “If you don’t mind me asking, Maggie, how long have you lived here in Edens? Are you relatively new to town?”

THE INTERVIEW:
I. What are your favourite and least favourite things about your hometown? How do they compare to how you feel about Edens Town?
“My favorite part about my hometown was having such easy access to the water. Growing up in Florida, you’re never really that far from one kind of body of water, but thankfully my family lived right near Cocoa Beach. Super touristy because of how close it is to Orlando, but it meant we never really ran out of things to do between the beaches, the amusement parks, and getting to go to the Kennedy Space Center. That’s why I liked it here, because we were still right on the water and the influx of people here in Edens over the last few years hasn’t bothered me much. Could always be worse!” Roman grins, taking a sip of his water as he ponders the next part of the question. “The least favorite thing would probably be the overwhelming number of tourists who would go there. I don’t mind tourists, of course, but most of the locals know that you want to take care of the place you live, so when you find litter and things like that all over the beach, it’s usually from the people visiting who aren’t cleaning up after themselves. I’d spend at least one day every weekend going around picking up litter with my dad because he was big on that sort of thing. Earth Day, we weren’t even allowed to look at a light switch let alone turn one on,” Roman laughs, shaking his head with a smile on his face. “I’m grateful for it, though. Helped instill a sense of duty in me from a young age.”
II. How do you feel about your life? For example, your family, your job?
“Overall, I can’t really complain much about my life,” Roman began with a shrug, “because my upbringing was really good. I was lucky to have been able to be raised in a two parent home, which I know is far less common these days. I love my parents and younger sister, Parker. She was adopted when I was going into high school. She’s about ten years younger than me, so we were never super close when I lived at home, but after I was deployed overseas, we’d talk for hours whenever I’d call home so she could update me on her life and send me music she thought I’d like. It was a good way of getting to know her; I’m a firm believer in that people’s favorite things are a good way of getting to know them.” At the thought of his job, his face lit up. “I fucking love my job, pardon my French.” He laughs. “I never thought I’d be baking for a living, but I took a few classes with Parker when I retired from the military and fell in love with it. And the crew at Red Velvet, we’re all a little family. I’ve never dreaded having to go to work because regardless of how ornery some customers can be, the people I work with can always help make the day go to the point where I don’t wanna leave at the end of the day. It’s a nice feeling.”
III. What are your biggest achievements and your biggest regrets?
“Thus far, my biggest achievements would be my military service and being mostly self-taught when it comes to baking. I enlisted once I was 18 because I felt I had a duty to serve and protect the country that had provided me with so many opportunities, so once I graduated from high school, I was deployed for the better part of 10 years. I met and fought alongside of a lot of good people and I still keep in contact with a lot of them now. One of the main reasons I chose Edens was because a friend of mine I’d met there talked about his hometown constantly and it seemed like idyllic small town living. As for the baking, once I’d taken a couple classes, I turned to YouTube for the majority of the techniques I learned. I felt better about learning and failing in miserable ways in the comfort of my own home.” He chuckles, though it falls silent after a few moments, his smile turning melancholic. “As for biggest regrets, I regret not fighting harder for my relationship during that time. I felt like I did what I could, but maybe I could have done more. Either way, she was unhappy and I can’t blame her for calling off our engagement. I wish the best for her.”
IV. What is your biggest fear?
“Probably similar to everyone else’s: loss.” Loss of what, he didn’t have any intention of elaborating on, leaving her free to interpret his answer however she sees fit. He had already lost his relationship, having only found out through his family and not from the woman he had intended to spend the rest of his life with. Losing her and having to come to terms with the fact that love wasn’t enough to maintain a bond that had gone so strong for all the years they’d been in high school was difficult. Some could argue he hadn’t come to terms with it at all, considering he hasn’t been in a relationship since then. Better a broken heart than a hardened one.
V. What are your plans for the future?
“I don’t think I have any grand plans for my future, honestly,” he explains, shrugging once more. “I’m happy with my job, with where I live, especially having my sister here with me and my parents only a couple hours away by plane. Maybe someday I’d like to have a family, but this late in the game, it may not be in the cards for me.” He offers up a smile. “We’ll see what happens.”
VI. Can you describe yourself in one sentence?
“Regardless of what anyone may say, I’m the true Red Velvet Cake Wars champion.”

levi-mccoy:
Levi let out a loud laugh as they walked to the air hockey table, “You can’t talk shit and then take it back, dude. If you’re gonna talk shit then stand by it. McCoy rules,” he added with a smirk as he put the quarters in for the game. “It’s not rigged though, bunch of us pooled some money last year to get them a new table, it’s the newest thing in here aside from the owners hair piece and his young girlfriend.” He grabbed the puck once it loaded on his side and set it down, hitting it with his best shot only to have it bounce back and he hit it again, just almost getting it in but not quite. “Hey I was wondering actually, I mean to ask Anna but I was thinking of maybe doing like a little baking or cooking lesson for the kids, especially the ones who are yanno, kids of single parents and are gonna have to learn to cook young. You think that’s something you could do?”
“Am I an honorary McCoy now then, huh?” Roman laughed as he got himself ready, poised and ready to hit the puck as it shot his way and glancing across the table at the other man as he explained his thoughts. “Cooking lesson? I could definitely do that; that’s how I learned to do everything I know how to do -- and YouTube, but at least this way they could learn in a safer environment. I don’t have a lot happening outside the bakery, though it’d probably have to be after Valentines Day since we’re already looking at a really busy couple of weeks until then. I can talk to Anna and see if she’d mind us using the bakery’s kitchen after hours. What gave you the idea?”
magdalenasanticgo:
It was like she knew exactly what he was going to say before he even said it, but this was her place of work and there was absolutely no way in hell she could start freaking out about things, she also needed to keep herself in check, it was not like she could just come up and tell him he had a one-year-old daughter just like that, it wasn’t the kind of news you just broke. “Doesn’t sound ridiculous at all,” Magdalena shook her head, biting on her bottom lip as she debated what she would tell him next. Their lives had intertwined for one night and one night alone— she woke up before he did, collected her things and went on her way without really saying anything else because there was nothing to be said. He was heartbroken at the time, and she had fun. They did. There was no regretting because Mia had been born and she was the best thing that had ever happened to her. “New York, about two years-ish ago? We didn’t trade names and just had fun, for the sake of it? We were both pretty wasted, but I took one good look at your face before I left your home— so no. You don’t sound ridiculous at all, life’s just funny.”
Roman took a few more moments to look over her face and her words jogged his memory. He could remember that night -- well, not all of it, but enough to recognize her. He was in the area for his younger sister’s graduation, visiting extended family and exploring the city when they’d met. He hadn’t been the one night stand type before that, but he was getting over the fact that his ex had moved on to someone new, throwing the years they’d had together away without giving him a chance to fight for it. “Small world...” Roman’s voice trailed, but a slow smile came to his face. “Nice to see you again. Since we never exchanged names before, I’m Roman.”
kxtebronson:
“Yeah. It’s my law. I have decided I am president of this town, and it is the only way I can get my way around here.” shrugging, before waiving for the bartender to head to their table. “Listen, it’s not my fault. The Kappa Delta Phi’s were no rookies. It was either learn how to handle my liquor, or end up with a penis on my face - and I am not hot enough to pull off a black sharpie penis.” Kate turned to the bar tender and ordered the two of them two Irish trashcans, before she turned back to Roman. “Can we sing Gwen Stefani this time? Oh, when am I going to meet your sister? She seems cool.”
"I’m sure you could pull off all kinds of looks other people couldn’t,” Roman replied with a laugh, thinking back to how he was when he was in high school. He’d never gotten the college experience, but hearing Kate’s stories always made him wonder if he would have ever enjoyed it at all anyway. Definitely didn’t seem like his crowd. “We can sing Gwen. Are you thinking Hollaback Boy or Sweet Escape? I could do Akon’s part justice.” He laughed again, looking over the drink as it was brought over to their table. “This looks... Interesting. We shoot these, then head up?” he raised a brow, then smiled at the mention of Parker. “You can meet her whenever you want. You two would probably get along. She’s a big music person.”
