He Got Game
She never knew she was feeding a legend.
She just knew a hungry young man needed to eat first.
In 1991, a 26-year-old Dr. Dre was broke and between record deals in Compton when corner store owner Inez Bramwell, 49, started sliding him a paper bag of pan dulce and a folded note every Tuesday.
She told him, "Eat first. Play after." She never let him pay.
She charged everyone else 85 cents for a soda. She charged him nothing.
Dre lost touch with the block after he made it big. In 2024, he found her again - Inez, now 82, living in a Lynwood duplex, diabetic, and $128,000 behind on insulin bills and back rent.
Dre knocked on her door holding a folded paper bag. He said, "Inez. I ate first." She asked, "And the playing?" He said, "Came after. Just like you said." She covered her mouth.
He cleared every dollar of debt that evening. Then he bought the corner store back and reopened it under her name.
Every Tuesday, pan dulce is free for any kid who walks in hungry.
