Almost as if he knew exactly what they were saying, Brock’s head lifted up with the saddest of eyes, the look very obviously begging for something. “Oh, does he ever,” Leila laughed, turning back towards her dog to nudge at his side with her hip. “Stop looking at her like I never feed you, jerk.” Leila hummed her agreement as Rosalia talked, knowing that her decision probably wouldn’t be made until the very last second when they got there. Indecision wasn’t uncommon when she was picking things out. “Sometimes I end up with like…a mix of flavors because I can’t pick. Sometimes it’s good. Sometimes…not so much.”
“Oh man, your dog’s gonna have me whipped in no time at all.” She laughed as the dog pleaded with her and got nudged. “Don’t worry, buddy, if I knew food was on the table, I’d probably be begging too.” Rosa talked to Brock jokingly. “Yeah, a friend of mine was saying he once saw someone do bacon and avocado flavoured ice cream and we came to the conclusion we did not want to try it ever. You gotta tell me what the worst flavours you put together were, though!”

“What can I say? I’m great at giving advice.” Little did the other woman know, he wasn’t great at that service at all. In fact, what he usually said was probably best not to do. “It’s the best stuff, but you can’t get the squeeze bottle stuff. You have to go big and get the glass jar butterscotch. It melts right in with the hot chocolate if you mix it up.” Smile widened only slightly as she asked about his children. He was still getting used to being the fathering type, but he took pride in knowing that he’d done two things right in life. “Only two. My five year old is smarter than I am and my youngest, she’ll be one soon, and she’s already giving me a run for my money.” Maggie was a handful, but he welcomed every challenge she offered. “Custom sounds fancy and expensive.” If he were paying a ton for something like that, he probably would have been a bit more picky too. “I’m sorry to hear about your mom.” It seemed as though she were no stranger to loss and he hated that for her. “You could just have a walking disclaimer ready for when you meet new people,” he joked, hoping it wasn’t too insensitive. “Do you think you’ll go back to Cali or is Providence Peak where you wanna be?”
Rosa raised an eyebrow while she contemplated his suggestion. “I’ll have a take a look in the market and see if I can find some good quality stuff when I next go so I can try that.” She decided, saying it out loud rather than to him so she’d remember to do that. It may have only been a small change to his face but the little added smile made her smile a little more and even more so when he spoke about his kids. “Congratulations! I’m sure you’re an amazing dad who definitely gives them way too much candy.” She very lightly nudged his leg with her foot so he knew she was entirely messing with him. “Depends what they want to be honest. Most people go very custom if they want something very intricate and time consuming which is expensive but sometimes they just want a minimalistic dress but with a different cut to the others. It can really just depend.” She explained. “It’s fine. It was a long time ago.” She replied and although she wasn’t so hurt by her mum’s passing when she was younger, it didn’t mean that she didn’t miss her. Maybe even more so now that she was expecting herself. “Next time I’ll wear a sign around my neck, I promise!” She joked back, trying to retain the lightness. “I think I want to stay. Don’t get me wrong, being here without him sometimes feels like I’m being an imposter here but if it keeps me close to him, I don’t mind so much. Plus, Cali just feels like it would be a step backwards and make me unhappy.”

“Jittery mess, imploding world. I think you can handle it. If you can’t, then at least you tried.” It often felt like his world was imploding, but there was no one to blame but himself. His poor decisions and lack of an impulse control had given him two of the best daughters that he could have ever asked for. “Hot chocolate’s alright. Not my favorite, but add a little butterscotch syrup to it or something? Then I can get behind it. My oldest loves hot chocolate though. Not sure where she got that sweet tooth from.” Knowing Maggie, she’d love it too. “Seems like a lot of stress to me. Aren’t brides like, the worst during wedding time?” He had no real experience on that front, but he’d watched an episode or two of bridezillas. “No? That much of a dog person, huh?” He wasn’t sure what a cat person would entail, but it was nice to know that he was so easily read. “Not a vegan and doesn’t like yoga. Got it. Sounds like you have some good stories you could tell. Did you move around a lot as a kid or were you lucky enough to stay in one place?” He’d always envied what military kids rolled through Bighorn Hills high school, but moving around couldn’t have been easy. “Damn,” he exhaled, eyes falling to the table space between them. “I’m.. so sorry. I wasn’t thinking. I didn’t mean to,” he trailed off, cheeks flushing red. “I shouldn’t have pushed. Bad habit of mine.”
“Now that’s a good way to think of it.” Rosa considered. Honestly, it was good advice too. “I don’t think I’ve ever tried it with butterscotch before. I might have to give it a go.” She made a mental note to get some butterscotch syrup on her next shopping trip. “How many kids have you got?” The woman asked curiously. Now that she was expecting, she liked talking to people about their kids and watching how parents spoke about them. “Don’t get me wrong, you get plenty of bridezillas working through their stress but most just appreciate the work you put in to it - especially if it’s a custom gown made just for them.” Rosa answered. “Actually, not too much when I was a kid. My mum was around so we stayed on camp while my dad went overseas but when she passed, I did travel to a few different states when he had to but he mostly stayed based in Cali.” Rosalia explained. She knew a lot of families who were constantly in and out of the camp when she was growing up and she’d count her lucky stars that she had her mum when she was young so she could stay grounded. “Really, it’s fine. You didn’t know, I’m still getting used to explaining it to people. I should have probably just said something but I also didn’t want to bring the mood down, you know?”

“Or, here’s a thought, you just get two shots. I promise, if you get more than one, nothing bad happens.” Whatever her reason was, he could respect it. “I don’t think I could function on anything decaf at this point. Seems like I’ve always got some crazy shit going on.” Whether he was playing father to his five year old or stepping up for his almost one year old daughter, he was always doing something. “What’s your favorite wedding season? Summer? Spring? Fall? I don’t think people do winter weddings, right? Seems too cold.” Her assumption caused a quiet sound of laughter to roll off his tongue and into the air between them. “Safe to say, yeah. I’ve never been a big cat person.” Dogs, however big or small, had won his heart. “Cali girl following her hubby to Colorado. Must be true love if he got you to move,” he teased as fingers tapped against the side of his coffee cup. “How long have you two been together? Can’t imagine someone would leave the golden state for the hell of it.”
“You don’t know nothing bad would happen. The world could implode! Or I’d just be a jittery mess, whichever comes first.” Rosa joked. “I get that. It’s more for if I need a hot drink before bed - though that is usually hot chocolate or something like that. Hang on, if you’re not a fan of chocolate so much, does that mean you don’t like hot chocolate either?” She went off on a tangent. Rosalia hummed in thought for a second while she considered what her favourite was. “I’d say Spring. I get to do more floral designs which was way more fun from a creating point of view but that does leak a little in to the summer season when people want to do more outdoorsy weddings.” The brunette answered. “Totally understandable. I couldn’t see you being a cat person either way.” She replied. “Yeah... though, not the worst thing. I wasn’t really the usual Cali girl who does way too much yoga and preaches about the vegan lifestyle. I was actually raised on an army base so I was more used to that kind of lifestyle so the move wasn’t so hard really.” She liked to think she held a lot of her mum’s Latina side but she also couldn’t deny the side of her that was raised by a sergeant and around the other military families. She hesitated for slightly longer this time and felt like she should probably come clean a little more. “We were together for four years, married for two, but, erm, he passed away in March.” God, she made it sound so peaceful despite the reality and even then, she still put on a brave face and kept a smile on.

“You know one shot basically does nothing, right?” Granted, he didn’t need the extra energy most days and maybe she didn’t either. “Yeah? What happened? Did you decide you preferred the taste of milk one day and you just never went to it?” The first overpriced coffee he’d had changed his mind about coffee in general. He wouldn’t openly admit to his love of a good caramel macchiato, but his favorite drink to date had to be the pumpkin spice lattes that everyone always hyped up every season. “Guess I never thought about it like that. I’m sure you’ll be keeping busy. Seems like there’s always a wedding going on at the vineyard.” It was constantly packed with people and that seemed like good news for her. Smile grew wider as she asked questions that he felt all too eager to answer. “Well, first off, it’s a whole lot of everything. I mostly handle the wolves and their environment. My younger brother, he handles all the legal work, paperwork, and stuff about donations. I guess it’s a team effort.” Even if they made a shitty team in life, they weren’t half-bad at working together. “They’ve from here. I’ve lived here my whole life. Don’t see that changing. What about you? You from around here?”
“Maybe not but if I can trick my brain in to thinking it does... Don’t be ruining my imagination now!” Rosa joked. “Just didn’t need as much caffeine I guess and lattes just started to become the norm. Don’t get me wrong, I occasionally might get a decaf version of something with a bit more flavour but only when I fancy it.” She explained. “Yeah, we’re getting starting to get in to the summer wedding season prep now so things are starting to ramp up a little.” She agreed with his assessment. “That sounds really fun. Would that mean it’s fair to say you’re a dog person over a cat person?” Rosalia questioned, half joking but still, a valid question. “Nope, I’m a Cali girl. Raised just outside of San Diego. Moved here to be with my... husband. He was born and raised here too.” She hesitated on what to call Liam. She still wasn’t sure what to call him. Her late husband felt too formal and usually prompted the pity eyes from people. Still, though, calling him her husband felt too hopeful. It felt like he was still here and then the after thought of a reminder that he wasn’t just hurt. Either way, Rosa had mastered the smile that stayed on her face even after mentioning him.

“It might’ve worked! I could’ve at least tried, you know…” The brunette tried to keep a straight face yet struggled as she began to giggle. Everyone knew that the farmer loved his animals and would not give them up so easily. And while she may be cute, Asli knew realistically that not even she could be able to persuade him. Alex, potentially, but the woman needs to think of a masterplan. Glancing over, she smiled softly before shaking her head. “That’s so sweet of you but I don’t want you to overexert yourself, especially if you’re also feeling overwhelmed. You coming over is still a great idea; Perhaps you can do that and we can order some takeout? I don’t want you to become too overwhelmed.” And with the baby in the picture, Asli was ready to do anything to ensure that didn’t happen.
“It might’ve worked... but probably only temporary before you got caught.” Rosa teased. “I’m overwhelmed with the crowds, not you and Alex. Besides, you know I like to keep busy too.” It was the one thing since Liam was gone: she kept busy to distract herself. She went back to work quickly and as hard as it was, it stopped her from thinking about it when she was focused on other tasks - even something as simply as cooking a meal for a friend. “If you really want takeout food, we can but I really don’t mind cooking if not.”
nikolausstark:
“Mike’s dad was a douche, honestly. When I told my parents my dad laughed so hard he shot water out of his nose and I’m like, pretty sure my mom got a picture of it,” Niko said with a laugh. For all of the ways his parents could be hard-asses in their own right they’d spent most of Niko’s childhood and his life in general, really, being mellow and lovely and supportive. His dad had always had a mischievous streak and he was Niko’s biggest supporter when it had come to the ridiculous things he’d gotten up to on base as a kid. “Why’s that?” He asked, dark eyes flicking towards Rosalia curiously. “D’you have a bum leg I don’t know about?” He teased, reaching down to tap on his right leg where his prosthetic began.
“Yeah, he was. Your parents were always pretty chill whenever I met them.” Rosa pointed out. In some ways, she was a little jealous of how Niko’s parents were with him after how her own dad treated her following her mum’s death. The cold shoulder she received was icy and Niko’s parents always just seemed so warm to her. The thought went away when he tapped his prosthetic and made her chuckle a little. “Not really. I guess I just take things a little slower at the moment. Just tired probably.” Which wasn’t a lie. She was exhausted permanently at the moment.

It was a control thing and an integral part of her day to get a workout in. Whether it was early in the morning prior to going into the restaurant, midday in between meetings, or late at night, it was crucial for her to get a workout in. It developed during college whenever her stress level was above what she could process and had become a great outlet for her over the years. Any pent up energy, anger, or frustration, she was able to sweat it out and level her train of thought to be able to handle the situation at hand.
It was the weekend and Zarah was crossing over into the Downtown area when she noticed Rosa crossing the other side of the street. “Rosa! Hey!” she called out as she ran over to meet up with them. The Hadid hadn’t seen the woman in some time and had invited her to come to a spin class she was teaching. It’s been some time with her busy schedule but she had meant to reach out to them.
Rosa was leaving work when she heard a very familiar voice calling her name. “Zarah! Hey!” She called back and slowed her walking to finally stop when Zarah was getting close enough. In all honesty, following the loss of her husband and the baby news, she hadn’t really thought too much about exercising much which meant she hadn’t seen Zarah at the gym for quite a while now. She almost felt guilty for not reaching out to meet her outside of the gym setting.
“Long time no see, stranger. Sorry about that.” She felt she was saying that a lot to people she’d not seen in the past two months. “How are you doing? You look great!”

“It’s really hard. I thought I could do it, but somehow he weasels his way into everything he wants anyway,” Leila chuckled, a warm smile stretching across her features. Though she may make complaints about the dog, it was obvious that she loved him more than just about anything else in the world. Neck stretching to one side as she thought about it, Leila fell into step with Rosalia to follow along to the ice cream shop. “You know, I don’t think I really have a favorite. I just kind of like ice cream a lot. Maybe something with coconut in it, I don’t know. I’m open.”
“I mean, it does look like he’s got the puppy dog eyes down pat from what I can tell.” Rosa smiled down to the dog and back up to Leila. “I still think that’s a good choice. To be honest, I think with food in general, a lot of it is just what you’re feeling in that moment. I can say raspberry ripple is my favourite but when I turn up there, god knows, I might pick some totally random flavour.” She rambled before realising she was rambling.
wesxkennedy:
“I guess moving to a new state and town also added to his shyness,” he spoke with a soft sigh. Wes never planned to move but, he knew that being in his mother’s hometown and being closer to his grandparents were good. Plus, he knew he needed the support and plus Oliver’s grandparents loves him so much. “Nice to meet you Rosa, I am Wes and you’re right. We have not met before. Just moved in and been here for like a month.”
“That is a pretty big change but I do hear kids are pretty resilient... especially when they’re that young.” Rosa looked over to the toddler and then back to Wesley with a reassuring smile, whether he needed it or not. “It’s nice to meet you too, Wes.” She made note to condemn the name to memory. “Oh yeah, I do remember my in-laws saying the house next door was for sale but they never said it got sold. I hope you’re liking it here!”

“I’ve got two shots. What about you?” Just because he couldn’t taste it, didn’t mean that it wasn’t somewhere mixed into the drink itself. “Something had to help keep me awake after staying up all night. Figured straight coffee was the trick.” It beat all those sugary energy drinks that his friends opted for and it never failed to do the job. Whatever he’d expected to fall gracefully from her lips, it hadn’t been the work of a seamstress. “I didn’t know those were real things,” he admitted, a brow arched and a crooked smile on his mouth. “I work at a wolf sanctuary that my parents started up.” He wondered what went through people’s minds whenever he told them what he did, but the woman before him seemed bold enough to express those thoughts. “Alright, I’d be a little more into it, but caramel alone still wins.” It was an odd choice, but he just wasn’t much of a fan. “Coffee keeps me up but by the end of the night, it’s worn off.” Unless he added shots of espresso, then it did wonders. “Not like I’m doing much else today, so sure. Lead the way.”
“You got me there, I only had 1 shot.” Rosa admitted with a little laugh. “Yeah, honestly black coffee was something I survived off of when I was a teenager.” But that was mainly when she was acting out and drinking most nights and needed some coffee to get her through the day time. “Well, yeah. Someone’s gotta make ‘em. Most brides and grooms need some kind of alterations when they pick out a dress or suit so again, steady hands.” She wiggled her fingers when she mentioned steady hands. Rosa had heard about the wolf sanctuary but in all honesty, she hadn’t thought too much about it until he mentioned it. “That’s actually really cool but if I’m totally honest, I have no idea what a job like that actually involves. Looking after the wolves? Preserving their environment?” Rosa tried to guess. She guided him over to the table she’d claimed beforehand and sat back down after he agreed to join her. “If your parents set up the sanctuary here, does that mean you’re from here or did they move here to set it up?” She asked for the sake of getting to know him.
draslihanxfahri-bailey:
“Hopefully next year? They were these adorable little pygmy goats and I just did not want to let mine go. I nearly kidnapped it. Though I’m pretty sure Frederick would’ve come knocking at my door once he realized that Becky was gone. Something tells me he wouldn’t be moved by my puppy dog eyes.” A shame, truly. But heading back to the farm was always an option and might just be what she’ll take. As they headed on, she shook her head at her words. “Honestly? I think I might just head back home after we’re done. Take a nap or something… I guess I’m not really in the festive mood today.”
“Yeah... goat-napping might not be the best idea. I wouldn’t want to be on the wrong side of Frederick at the best of times.” Rosa chuckled at the thought of Asli stealing a goat to begin with. “That’s okay! This whole festival thing still feels a little overwhelming to me too. I mean, if you like, after you’ve had a nap, I’d be more than happy to bring some food over and cook for you and Alex?”
atlaswilliams:
“Beats straight milk with no espresso,” he countered smoothly as he attempted to bite back a smile but failed. “I used to drink black coffee as a kid because it’s all my parents had. Pretty sure they stopped making it because they knew I was the one draining the pot.” He hadn’t liked it and the caffeine crash always left him with regrets. “A job that requires steady hands. What is it that you do?” Sounded important, whatever it was. “Little bit of both? Not so much for chocolate,” he hummed, though that much should have been obvious by his choice of caramel. “What about you? Just drinking milk to keep those steady hands?”
“I think you’ll find we both only have a drop of actual coffee in our drinks so don’t come for me with that, Mr. caramel.” Rosa teased back, adding a little nickname on the end. “Yeah, I don’t think I ever got that bad... or my dad drank the pot before I could get to it.” She chuckled. “I’m a seamstress. I design wedding dresses and suits and well, some of the detailing on those dresses really needs a steady hand. What about you? What do you do?” Rosa explained and asked in return. “Okay, not so much for chocolate but what if the chocolate had caramel in it? You gotta admit, that’s a good version!” She suggested. “Mostly that and I want to be able to sleep tonight.” And there was the small matter of the baby but she wasn’t ready to talk about that with many people at the moment, let alone a stranger. “Want to come and sit down by the way? I had a table...” She offered.
leilabarak:
To say that Leila’s dog was spoiled would be a complete understatement. The dog had that loping, casual demeanor that people always seemed to want to give him anything he wanted, Leila herself included. “He does kind of always get whatever he wants, he’s very spoiled like that,” Leila admitted with a warm chuckle. She understood that she fell for it every time and was perfectly happy to accept that she was completely at his mercy. “But, oh, no I’m not busy at all. We’re just…wandering around, I guess. It’s a nice day, so,” Leila shrugged. It was nice out and there was a lot to see. Brock hadn’t fully flopped over to nap yet and seemed to be having fun, so Leila didn’t mind staying out there longer for him. “What uh - what kind of ice cream do you usually go for?”
“I think that’s exactly why I couldn’t have a dog. I wouldn’t be able to say no to those puppy dog eyes. It’d kill me!” Rosa half-joked. The main reason was the downgrade in her living space and not having a garden for it. As much as Rosa adored any kind of animal, she knew she couldn’t handle one at the moment. “Well then, let’s go!” The brunette gestured in the direction of the ice cream parlour before starting to walk. “I love a good raspberry ripple or anything with chocolate. What about you?”
