“you would think that being called the ‘most haunted hotel’ in washington would bring some life into this place, bring a bunch of curious minds and adventure seeking people.” joey ran her fingers across the window sill, gathering a layer of dust on her fingertips before dusting it off with her thumb. “but it really is just a disgusting waste of space.”

“Honestly, I’ve been here less than a day and the idea of moving back in with my mom and four other brothers isn’t sounding too bad right about now.” Rose replied. “But then again, I don’t think I can stand another year of being harassed and constantly irritated by them so looks like I’m going to have to settle here. What’s your excuse?”

“Well, in that case, I’m in no position to turn down any help. However, I advise you not to be so trusting of people. What if I just dragged all this luggage out here to lure you into my room just to add to my collection of skeletons hiding in my closet?” Rose chuckled, teasing the stranger. She pointed at the last few boxes she needed help lifting and led him into her room. “Nice to meet you, Nik. I guess I should offer my name as collateral as well. I’m Rose. Rose Cuevas.” She said.

“Well then, consider yourself lucky that your parents saved you from such embarrassment.” Rose responded. Rose didn’t really expect him to understand where she was coming from. She was incredibly self-conscious so any awkward encounter would cause her to be embarrassed, others may not have seen it as a big deal but Rose considered everything to be a big deal. She was just always so nervous around people, which is why she never really interacted with others, her often-cruel sarcasm became some kind of defense mechanism to push people away. “Yeah but we live in the same building so I’d still consider you a neighbor.” Once again, the stool that she was standing on almost managed to make her fall. Luckily, he caught her by the waist before she completely lost control of her balance. He grabbed onto her waist a bit tighter, carrying her down from the stool. She grasped his arms tightly and looked him in the eyes; suddenly it was like something had hit her. She couldn’t exactly put her finger on it but it was like one of those instantaneous moments, where everything was just moving in slow motion. “No need to apologize. Thanks for the help.” She smiled lightly, releasing him from her strong grasp. “You never told me your name, by the way.”

“I’m not ashamed, it’s just embarrassing. It’s kind of like when your parents call you corny nicknames in public, it’s not because you’re ashamed of them but it’s simply just embarrassing.” Rose turned around and looked over at the boy in the doorway. “Are you going to come in and help or just stand there and be useless?” She pulled out some window curtains from one of the boxes and climbed on top of a rickety, wooden stool to reach the top of the window. “No, like the thorn.” She replied sarcastically. “Yeah, looks like I’ll be here for a while too. Guess that makes us neighbors.” She said. She almost lost her balance on the stool but caught herself before falling flat on her face. “Hello? A little help here, please?”

Rose looked up only to see a girl, who was almost as pale as a ghost, standing in front of her. The girl’s eyes were dreary and almost looked dead. As Rose grabbed for the pads, the girl’s icy cold hands touched Rose’s and almost made Rose shiver a bit. Rose didn’t think much of it though, there was a bit of a draft in the hotel anyhow. “Uh, you don’t get your period anymore? What’s that about? Are you going through premature menopause or something?” She said, jokingly. “Sorry, it’s none of my business. But I’d very much appreciate your help.” She picked up the box and carried it into her room, the girl followed also carrying the last of the luggage into Rose’s room. “Thanks for doing this. I’m actually glad to see I’m not the only person residing in this dump. I haven’t really seen anyone around since I’ve been here. I guess it’s just pretty dead around here, huh? I’m Rose, by the way.”

Rose looked up at the stranger, blushing from embarrassment. She smiled lightly as he handed the pads to her. “Still doesn’t make this interaction any less awkward, to be honest.” She stuffed the rest of the stuff back into the box and began to make her way to her room as he offered her a helping hand. “I literally just met you two minutes ago and you’re offering to help carry my luggage into my room? How do you know I’m not some crazy serial killer trying to lure you into my room with my luggage?” She smirked.

Rose’s cheeks were incredibly red. She was pretty relieved by the way he reacted. Usually anything concerning feminine products would make any boy cringe but I guess he was more understanding than most guys. “Right. Well, lucky for you, it’s something you’ll never have to be ashamed about.” She quickly stuffed everything back into the box and carried it into her room. “I’m Rose, by the way.” She shouted from her room as she plopped the box on top of her bed. “Are you just moving in too?” She asked as she started organizing her new room.

Rose was growing weary carrying all of her luggage into her new room or what would soon be her temporary home for the next year or so. She wasn’t really sure how long she was planning to stay but she thought the hotel was a good place to settle, just until she figured out what her next step in life would be. As she picked up the last full box, all of her feminine products tumbled out of the box. She quickly tried to pick everything up from the floor before anyone would notice but it was too late. Someone was already holding a pack of pads in front of her face, “Are these yours?” The stranger asked. She was flushed and utterly embarrassed. “Um, no.” She said trying to save herself from being the hotel’s joke. “Actually, yeah. They are. Ugh, sorry. This is so embarrassing.” She admitted.
