Actually, my therapist has told me this is a healthy way of processing things. Because you can get the trauma out of your head And you can write the ending you wish it had. The trusted person rescue, the catharsis of getting to kill the one who hurt you.

It's good for your brain. It's healthier than bottling it up. Fiction is where we go for emotional release. That can be true with trauma too.

Every single person I knew (past tense) who has drowned was "a strong swimmer." Water in the wild does not care how good you are at swimming.

I mean this with all due respect:

You are not going to pass a skillcheck against a rip current once it has you.

Waves will not bow to your physical prowess no matter how impressive.

Shock does not care that you used to be on your school swim team.

If you hit your head, being good at swimming isn't going to turn you face-up while you're unconscious.

You may be unable to return to shore. Rescue may be unable to find you quickly.

Saying this as a former lifeguard at a communtiy pool AND a former competitive swimmer who likes to canoe.

Natural water sources are beautiful, wonderful, should be protected and honored, and don’t care about how strong a swimmer you are.

Even if you know one natural body of water REALLY well, it just means you know that particular one fairly well. But oceans, lakes, riversc creeks all have specific and unique tides, currents and geography that change FAST.

I’m also gonna point out that people really underestimate pollution and wildlife they are unfamiliar with, and even funny interactions (like a turtle hit my shin at a beach and DAMN did it hurt) can go south fast. Like…river bottoms suddenly drop out by a good 3-5 feet and change current. And its funny for all of 2 seconds when your pal biffs it walking along, and then 5 seconds later he is 50 yards off and screaming for help.

Treat the water like you treat a sharp cliff. Beautiful, majestic. But be mindful of it at all times.

Oh, and so you don't get surprised like I did, have an avoid: Hillsdale College is a conservative Christian site and not a valid MOOC place.
