Week 01 Lecture Notes

Week 1:- Introduction and Reverse History

The introduction to the Des106 module started off with Paul our lecture outlining how we are going to be assessed through this module of “Introduction of Communication Design.”  I felt that he explained this really well in which we were allowed to ask any questions if we were in doubt! The second part of this lecture involved Paul briefly mentioning “Five Secrets from 86 Notebooks” by Michael Bierut’s, he asked each of us to watch his video.

Quotes and Statements also mentioned in this lecture:-

 “The value of a solid knowledge and understanding of the history of design cannot be understated.” My significant of this statement underlines the importance of preparation and research by performing multiple design concepts before a final version is created. My strongly believe that creating a variety of design’s produces better results.

As Confucius wisely said,

“Study the past if you would define the future.”

 Otherwise, if you know what came before you will be better equipped to design for whatever is to come. No one can work effectively in a creative vacuum. Fact.

Dieter Rams developed his ideal design of the Braun Radio which influences by the ‘Ulm School of Design’. If Dieter Rams’ existence wasn’t familiarised by Johnathan, products that we love and utilise nowadays, the first iMac, iPod and current ranges of Apple devices would have never existed.

Paul then showed us how the inspiration of past artists has helped Guillermo del Tero develop the fascinating creatures shown in the movies ‘Pan’s Labrynth’ and ‘Pacific Rim’.

Designer Essay Research on Wolfgang Weingart

Weingart was most influential as a teacher and a design philosopher. He began teaching at the Basel School of Design, where he was appointed an instructor of typography by Armin Hofman in 1963. He also taught for the Yale University Summer Design Program in Brissago. Throughout his entire career he spent time traveling and lecturing throughout Europe, the Americas, Asia and Australia. He taught a new approach to typography that influenced the development of New Wave, Deconstruction and much of graphic design in the 1990s. While he would contest that what he taught was also Swiss Typography, since it developed naturally out of Switzerland, the style of typography that came from his students led to a new generation of designers that approached most design in an entirely different manner than traditional Swiss typography.

Designer Essay Research on Saul Bass

Saul Bass (May 8, 1920 — April 25, 1996) was a graphic designer and filmmaker, perhaps best known for his design of film posters and title sequences.

Saul worked side-by-side with his wife Elaine Bass for much of his career.

During his 40-year career Bass worked for some of Hollywood’s greatest filmmakers, including Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Otto Preminger, Billy Wilder, and Martin Scorsese. He became well-known in the film industry after creating the title sequence for Otto Preminger’s The Man with the Golden Arm in 1955. For Alfred Hitchcock, Bass designed effective and memorable title sequences, inventing a new type of kinetic typography, for North by Northwest,Vertigo (working with John Whitney), and Psycho.

Bass also designed some of the most iconic corporate logos in North America, including the original AT&T “bell” logo in 1969, as well as their later “globe” logo in 1983. He also designed Continental Airlines’ 1968 “jetstream” logo and United Airlines’ 1974 “tulip” logo which have become some of the most recognized logos of the era

Your essay should be well planned and researched before you start writing. Take a look at a few of the designers in question to see which one you wish to cover.

Your final essay should be in the form of a single page website, suitably illustrated with photographs and images of the designers work. You may want to consider designing your essay in the style of the designer chosen, or you may wish to use your own approach. All sources should be properly referenced; one of our former IMD students David Turner created this very useful tool ReferenceIt to help make the job easier.

Before taking your essay to the web you should submit it to Turnitin for a quick review of originality. I will run through this process in Week 08.

This project equates to 50% of your final mark for this module. 10% of this will cover use of proper grammar and spelling and another 10% will be given over to the final design.

You should write your essay with Markdown in the first instance. This will allow you to concentrate on the content at the beginning. Once completed you can convert it to HTML5 and add some CSS3 magic.

Bauhaus Typography Research

                                                     Bauhaus

The Bauhaus was a school whose approach to design and the combination of fine art and arts and crafts proved to be a major influence on the development of graphic design as well as much of 20th century modern art. Founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar, Germany in 1919, the school moved to Dessau in 1924 and then was forced to close its doors, under pressure from the Nazi political party, in 1933. The school favored simplified forms, rationality, functionality and the idea that mass production could live in harmony with the artistic spirit of individuality. Along with Gropius, and many other artists and teachers, both Laszlo Moholy-Nagyand Herbert Bayer made significant contributions to the development of graphic design. Among its many contributions to the development of design, the Bauhaus taught typography as part of its curriculum and was instrumental in the development of sans-serif typography, which they favored for its simplified geometric forms and as an alternative to the heavily ornate German standard of blackletter typography.

The design field I researched was Bauhaus, as it was highly influential throughout its design era. Therefore I was interested to design a Poster around ‘Bauhaus and the New Typography’. I gathered below examples of existing posters which helped influence my ideas which I designed my version using the tools within the Adobe Photoshop Software package. 

Remarks/Comments for this Assignment

Imagine the poster is to be used to promote an exhibition on the period of design history of your title choice.

You will find most of the material you need to know from Meggs' History of Graphic Design don't worry about rushing out and buying it (it's pretty expensive) the library will have a copy you can work from.

As with the previous one your poster should be A3 (420mm x 297mm) and ideally created in Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop, alternatively you may use Sketch.

Claude Garamond

Claude Garamond (1490-1561)

A native of Paris, Garamond was an engraver and letter founder of high repute. He was known as the best typecutter of his day. He was commissioned by King Francis First of France to make a new cast of type for his own exclusive use, now known as Grecs du Roi.

Garamond was the first to produce a reworking of the earlier typefaces of Aldus Manutius, creating a face called Garamond. This small roman type became the standard European type of the day and was still in use in the 18th century. During most of the 20th century, most leading foundries around the world have redrawn their own versions of Garamond's typeface, and Garamond's roman is still regarded today as one of the classic typefaces .

Deliverable 01 - Type Specimen Poster

For our first project in this module we were asked to produce a Type Specimen Posted based around one of the fonts:-

After conducting out research I decided to base my Poster around the Type Specimen ‘Garamond’ as this typefont is defined as excellent readability, elegance, and character. These characteristics are important when aiming to catch the audience’s eye so that it can be understandable. 

Below are examples of Garamond Type Specimen Posters that I researched before I decided to produce my own version using the Adobe Photoshop Software package.

You poster should be A3 (420mm x 297mm) and ideally created in Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop, alternatively you may use Sketch (students can avail of a 50% discount for this excellent product). If you are not familiar with any of these yet don’t panic. You could use (and it really pains me to say this) Microsoft Word until you get to grips with the former.
