eddie laughed        a typical loud yet dulcet laugh that was quite common to hear around hogwarts and easy to distinguish as his. “oh, DEFINITELY. d’you reckon they stay up late talking about boys and having pillowfights? might be the only thing after a long day of auror-ing that they look forward to.”

evan grinned in tandem with edgar’s laugh;  there was something kinda nice about getting a nice reaction outta someone.  “ listen,  I’m not about to put money on that being what they’re doing  ...  but,  like,  I really hope they’re gossiping and playing never-have-I-ever,  y’know?  picturing it makes them being here kinda bearable.  “

      “ so what I’m hearing is,  you think I could push james to get some answers on this. “  evan gave a decisive nod of his head  —  like he cared enough to press anyone for information about where the aurors were staying.  hell,  like he was close enough to james to get away with pressing him for information on anything.  “ I really wouldn’t be surprised if that’s how they were passing the time.  the ministry’s finest,  right?  this is probably a nice chance for them to feel like they’re back in their hogwarts glory days. “

“  you do know how much I hate the idea of being murdered for treason,  “  evan said,  nodding his head in concession to ted,  half a smile playing over his lips.  “ so,  yeah,  really,  it’s better for us that the school doesn’t seem to be all that concerned about someone disappearing from it.  luck’s on our side,  man. “  he nodded again,  a smaller motion,  more to himself this time.  he wasn’t worried,  yet,  but it felt like maybe he should start steeling himself towards something worse than a guest lecturer making herself scarce.  “ oh,  here and there.  every year,  I forget how much the professors love to start hard after winter break.  you?  enjoying yourself much? “

         tilting  her  head  caused  long  strands  of  blue  silk  to  slide  across  her  shoulders,  bright  eyes  falling  to  the  work  spread  out  on  the  table  in  front  of  him.   “   well  aren’t  you  a  flirt?   ”   she  smirked,  taking  a  seat  at  the  very  same  table  before  leaning  back.   “  history  of  magic,  hmm?  how  exciting.  and  it  is  due   …   tomorrow?  ”  like  many  people,  marley  had  a  habit.  aside  from  the  ever  present  mischievous  spark  in  her  eyes,  she  also  had  a  tendency  to  arch  her  brow  whenever  asking  a  question.  “   meaning,  should  i  leave  and  give  you  the  chance  to  run  into  me  some  other  time?    ”

            “ I  might’ve  been  called  one  once  or  twice  before,  “   evan  conceded,   leaning  back  in  his  seat  to  give  marlene  a  slow  grin  as  she  sat  down.   he  was  always  ready  to  welcome  a  distraction.   “  god,   mackinnon,   it’s  the  worst.   sometimes  I  don’t  even  know  why  I’m  still  taking  it,   y’know?   if  I  were  smart,  I’d’ve  dropped  it  after  o.w.l.s  when  I  had  the  chance.   but,   nah,   it’s  due  friday.   we’ve  got  a  loaded  practice  schedule  this  week  and  I  thought  I’d  take  some  initiative. “   he  raised  his  brows  at  her,   a  belated  mirror  to  the  delicate  arch  that’d  accompanied  her  question   —   though,   on  him,  it  was  clear  the  expression  was  making  fun  of  himself.   “ terrible  idea,  obviously.  I’d  love  the  chance  to  run  into  you  some  other  time,   but I’m  not  opposed  to  making  the  most  of  running  into  you  now,  either.  “

      “Not sure, but the pillow fights must get really intense.” Benjy gave a stern nod, his expression failing to hide his amusement despite the lack of a smirk. “This place is big enough, I wouldn’t be surprised if they had a million other rooms hidden about, if not at least five or six.”

          “ right?  just imagine getting whacked in the face with a pillow by someone who’s gone through auror training.  that’s gotta up the competition some. “   evan shrugged,  a lazy hand waving away benjy’s reasonable suggestion.  “ it’s definitely more fun to think they’ve gotta share than dwell on the fact that they’re here at all,  though,  I think. “

        “ aw,  hell.  I don’t think it’s,  like,  a courage thing.  I just don’t like talking to people.  there’s a time - honored rosier tradition of just bottling all your shit up until you die,  or your brother slips veritaserum into your eggnog at the family christmas party because he found out you’re sleeping with his wife.  I guess I could tell,  like,  slughorn that his parties are boring,  my step-mom that her chocolate cake isn’t actually my favorite,  and,  fuckin’  ...  uh,  listen,  that’s all I’ve got. “

“ c’mon,  now, “  evan said,  clapping a hand on ted’s shoulder.  it was in evan’s nature to shine a glossy veneer over things,  to avoid dwelling on the serious;   if ted really felt like brooding on the latest missing person’s case to sweep the papers,  he’d dip his toe into brooding,  too.  but it felt much better to joke,  and see if that’d do anything to drag ted’s tone away from bitterness.  “ a buddy system might’ve been the smart move,  here,  and we both know that’s never really been this place’s strong suit.  anyway,  we dodged a bullet not having one  ---  I can’t imagine how awful they’d be at matching up buddies.  our luck,  we’d get total drags. “

james’s eyes lit up almost the second evan started speaking.  while there was a moment he was concerned about someone getting hurt, it was quickly overcome with excitement.  that’s what they got for hauling their broom out to the forest.  “you had me at broom, mate.  i’m in.”  he slung an arm around the other’s shoulders, pulling him in closer.  “i’ll even give ya first go on his broom.  since you’re the genius who pointed it out to me.  what would i do without ya?”

evan allowed himself to be pulled in by james,  listing into him with a little more sway than he would’ve liked.  he made a mental note to steal someone’s water,  later.  “ alright!  I would’ve stood spectator alone,  but obviously it’ll be more fun with company. “  evan’s smile widened,  the edges of the expression sharpening to something just shy of a smirk.  “ listen,  I just did what any good samaritan would do.  it would’ve been cruel to see the broom and not share the news.  I’m doing,  like,  my civic duty here pointing you in its direction. “

regulus had consumed more to drink than he probably should have throughout the party, but post holiday parties were always the most fun, he was entitled to a little extra indulgence this evening. he glanced towards evan, face flushed a bright pink as he swirled what was left of the contents of his cup with a shrug. “i’m certainly enjoying myself.” he laughed slightly under his breath not entirely sure what at. “just hope i’m not the one doing anything stupid tonight.”

“ that’s what I like to hear! “  evan crowed,  slapping a somewhat over - zealous hand on regulus’ shoulder to accompany the words.  he was glad regulus already seemed to be indulging in the party,  and that he didn’t have to do his duty as,  like,  a friend or whatever and throw him into the fray.  evan was in the midst of a breather and didn’t know if he had it in him to throw someone into the fray just then.  he laughed,  trying for a reassuring tone when he said,  “ the gryffindors are acting like their usual selves tonight,  so even if you did something stupid later you wouldn’t be alone. “

emmeline would recognize that voice anywhere - even in a sea of students, she knew that evan rosier was being a prat somewhere in it, laughter spilled from her lips as she caught sight of him weaving his way through the crowd toward her - eyes widening as she watched him dig into the fifth year, “that was mean–” she chuckled, wrapping her arms around him to hug him tightly, “oh yeah?” smirk toying at her lips as she cocked a brow, “i know that the holidays must have been devastating without me, but come on love - have some dignity” eyes bright with mirth, she was kidding – that was the thing about evan, nothing was ever serious with him - at least from her scope, he was a good time and she needed that. “i’m about four in’ – evan, a fifth might take me under –” 

evan’s grin widened as he returned emmeline’s hug,  the expression shameless.  he shrugged when he pulled away and was sure to knock his shoulder against hers too  ---  even if it was far gentler than he’d been to the fifth year.  oops.  “ I don’t know if it was mean.  she gave me a look,  emmeline!  if she’d been the type to go for physical altercations over looks,  I’d be sporting a black eye right now,  I swear. “  parties were lawless lands and if he hadn’t jostled the fifth year,  someone else would have;  surely emmeline would understand why it had to be him.  “ absolutely devastating.  see,  you understand why I’ve gotta ply my brain with alcohol until I forget it. there’s no time for dignity when we have to fry my brain. “  he paused,  smirked;  he was sure there as room enough there for her to make a crack about his brain being plenty fried as it was.  “ no,  c’mon,  we’ll chug a cup of water each before the shot,  to cancel things out. “

evan slung an easy arm over regulus shoulders,  surveying the party before them with a relaxed expression.  the parties that welcomed students back after holiday were always the best;  evan was basking in the reprieve of hogwarts,  and felt magnanimous in sharing it with regulus.  “ having a good time,  man?   I think this particular party has outdone itself.  it’s got that aura that says something really stupid’s about to happen.  amazing.  “
