HO W DARE YOU
[egg noises]
i need asks or anons or something i’m dying currently right now and i am literally the worst at coming up with ideas for starters ,,
[quietly coughs up dust hoo boy did y’all even remember i ran this blog]
I couldn’t remember the word tumbleweed
roleplaying is all fun and games until you start feeling things
It’s not news anymore. Everyone kind of knows. No reason to tiptoe round the tulips here.
Vell, forgive me. I'm uninformed of a lot of zhings zhese days, unfortunately.
She could read his body language. Knew he was shutting down, sealing himself off. She shouldn’t have said anything. This was a mistake, and Shannon knew it.
Forcing a smile, she bobs her head in a half-hearted nod. “Yeah, well. That’s okay. I don’t need any answer now anyway.”
Emotion gets the best of her, knotting in her throat and lodging there. She sniffles once and picks his pastry box back up. She doesn’t question his want to leave. Instead, Miss Pauling just hands him his gift.
"Don’t forget this."
There is a very obvious hesitation before his hands emerge from his pockets. He didn't want her to see how they shook, but supposed he had no other choice. Hurt and majorly conflicted, maybe, but rude? No. He wasn't going to be rude.
Trembling fingers took the box and he inclined his head in acknowledgement and thanks. "Zhank you, Miss Pauling."
He turned on his heel to walk away, but stopped after only a few steps. He could not bring himself to turn around, but at least as long as she couldn't see his face, he was okay with saying, "I'll tell you if I zhink it's just a pipe dream vhen I have more information."
Better question, who are you?
I’m the Heavy Weapons Guy. Currently employed by one Grey Mann. You’re the kind of guy I’m supposed to ‘capture’ and ‘detain’.
I'm Nicklaus.
...Are you also supposed to give away your entire M.O. like zhat, or...?
rotenarzt started following you
I forget they got more than the one. You remind me or some kinda rodent.
Uh. Well alright.
I mean, at least I don't remind you of any sort of canine, I suppose. Rodentia, for zhe most part, are one of zhe cleaner orders of the animal kingdom....
But who are you, exactly?
Shannon lets him rant. She lets him say whatever he feels must be said, with her ceaseless patience. When she spoke, her tone was soft and steady. Impassioned, yes, but in a different manner. Tempered. A bit sad.
"I don’t pity you, Nicklaus. I miss you.”
"Whatever you think you’re worth, you underestimate. Because I do care about you." she paused, adjusting her glasses. "..Do you remember that feeling, when you’re young and you have this person in your life..and you meet them, and then you just..stay awake at night because you can’t stop thinking about them? You get butterflies and can’t get enough of just being with them. It’s not quite something, but by God you hope.”
"You hope it’s something. There’s not a feeling like it.”
Miss Pauling was trying hard to keep her composure, but emotion was getting the best of her tone.
"But something happens. And it comes between you, and you don’t know if you can get over it. If you can recover, because you feel so damaged. And it just builds, and gets worse, and it’s like..they’re not there anymore. And your chance is gone.”
Hypotheticals aren’t helping her, but she manages not to cry. This isn’t the time for that.
"What’s better? To accept that maybe its not meant to be, or dive back in and chase a pipe dream?"
Physically, he remained about the same...but something changed. Maybe half-way through her response, something in his face shifted. The line of mouth was harder and his eyes seemed just out of focus.
He withdrew. As the words she was saying and the meaning of them slowly registered, he withdrew. He didn't want to hear it...but he listened anyway, expertly blocking out any emotion he might have felt by those words.
This wasn't anything he wanted to know.
He should have left it alone.
"I see." He spoke, his eyes resting on her, but almost glassy in appearance. His tone was flat; mechanical. "Vell. I don't know vhat to tell you. I'm not exactly in zhe position to be giving adwice."
His back straightened and he shoved his hands into his pockets to hide the fact that they were shaking again. "I...have to leave."
As if Nick’s apology soothed the savage beast, Jin cleared her throat as he held up his two white flags. “Understandable…”
With his new approach, the Korean’s ominous glare slackened under the softening of her features, arms folding along her chest as those brown eyes kept up their glance in his direction.
"…If it makes you feel better, it was an accident. You weren’t in your right mind."
"Vell, if I vasn't in my right mind zhen I don't vant to know." He sighed, bringing his hand to his face. "Just as long as no one has been seriously hurt by me, I vill be fine not knowing...."
After a pause wherein he gathered his thoughts, he said, "I zhank you for your honesty, Jin, and I'm very sorry I don't remember you. I hope I haven't upset you...and zhat zhis is all somehow fixable."
"No, Nicklaus. It’s not." she disappointed him. She was wrapped up in a bad feeling. The same that plagued her when he’d looked at her not long ago, without even the dim flicker of recognition apart from the academic.
Miss Pauling.
Not Shannon.
"I’m selfish. I want you to remember. But I know it’ll hurt you, too."
So wrapped up in his own thoughts that he barely heard her tell him no. He deflated slightly. "Vell. Zhat's fine, I suppose. But I'm getting very sick and tired of begging people to give me some scrap of information about zhe last few months."
He tried to keep his temper under control, and if he knew Shannon anymore, he might have tried harder, but as it was... "I'm not stupid. I can tell things happened between me and other people. If it's anyzhing serious, I'm sure it vill hurt, but do you have any idea how it hurts to be pitied like zhis??"
He continued ranting, his long-winded nature getting the better of him, especially when he was so upset, "I notice too many zhings zhat other people don't to be treated like I'm so oblivious to zhe fact zhat people are keeping zhings from me. And maybe you aren't...but I'm still sick of it."
"I don't exactly know vhy it's selfish for you to vant my memories back, but be aware of how suspicious you look vhen you don't tell me vhy. For all intents and purposes, you should not care about me as a person, Miss Pauling. I'm just a mercenary."
Suddenly, he became aware of how loud he had become and he tried to perhaps fix it by becoming much gentler than he had been. "Just...Please don't treat me like I'm any different..."
"The idea of what now?" Klaus kept him pressed against the table just in case and glared right back. "Finish your goddamned sentence, you waste of space.”
Klaus wasn’t against the idea of making the first move, but only if the one he was with absolutely did not catch on - and it seemed to be the case with Nick. “Go on and tell me what you wanted me to hear.”
He turned his head, avoiding Klaus' eye. "Sorry. I seem to have forgotten."
Exactly how much he didn't want to say what he was going to say was practically tangible. He cursed himself for his lack of control over his own mouth. Now was really really not the time to be making that kind of joke.
He prayed that Klaus would just stab him or do whatever he planned on doing before he had to endure any more of his own stupid remarks.
"Nick—" she half-reaches out to him before her hands go to her sides. "I..don’t know what to tell you. I’m sorry."
Shannon sighs again, at a loss. She wants to helps, no needs to help, but has no clue if she can. “I think..either you need to remember what you’ve forgotten..or leave it that way.”
"...Is zhat some kind of ultimatum, Miss Pauling?" He asked, a tiny spark in his eye. He wanted her to say that it was. Just so that he would feel like he had something to prove....So that he wouldn't have to ask for anyone's help again.
There were ways to remember these things. Other amnesiacs who had things much worse than he had figured out what they'd forgotten. It was high time to stop asking people for help and time to just start throwing experiments at the wall to see what stuck.
Though Nick had to wonder why he only worked best under this kind of pressure...
And there it was, a splitting image of the man in his moment of weariness the first time the name had accidentally left insanity-induced lips.
Like a mirror of the past, Jin did not pry, but was outright and forward with what she knew. At least her respect for him had not dwindled, regardless of how she treated… most people.
"Very little," she responded, boring into him with a clear gravity unfamiliar for that naturally genial face. There was little she could do for his now prominent ailments, except restrain the urge to pull at them to figure out more about the enigma that was this woman. "I did not inquire any further on her—I told you shortly after…"
Her voice dwindled. It wasn’t… technically her fault, kinda, that cryptic information left an unhinged tongue. However temporary the ebbing of her strength was, it only springs back when his allegations garner her attention. That head snaps up with a fierceness in its eyes, challenging him to test her patience.
"…"
It doesn’t seem like she’s going to say how, anymore.
Those eyes make any suspicions he might have had shrivel up and die where they were. That vaguely annoying but cute girl was so suddenly replaced with that stern stare that he actually took a step back.
He reminded himself that Jin was no one to be spoken to that way...And then proceeded to mentally kick himself for being so effortlessly put in his place by a young girl's mere glance.
"I'm sorry." He said, holding up his hands as though she were going to strike him or something. "I'm sorry. It's just zhat I don't tell people about her often."
He gently persisted, "And...It is suspicious zhat von't tell me how you know. Is it...Somezhing I don't vant to know?"
