Polished Silver
Images of finished sterling silver jewellery. All pieces are polished with tripoli and then rogue for a mirror finish. In the future I would like to explore the use of colour and stones. I think it would be very valuable to experiment with precious metals to learn their properties and how to use those to your advantage. These are made with the concept that they are to be worn- I would like to push this idea to encourage un-practical jewellery.
Jesmonite hand mould- using alginate to capture the finest detail, jesmonite is poured into the hand mould. Once cured the jesmonite is a hard substance alike plaster but much harder and finer.
This is a very similar process to making teeth moulds. I am looking to use the hands to display jewellery made by myself. It could be interesting to see what effects can be done to the hand or ways to make it more abstract.

Shinta is a silversmith based in Japan. I am fascinated by the technique of forging metal into functional items such as vases and bowls. The metal is slowing hammered using certain hammers to create curved objects. I am going to purchase sheets of metal, starting with copper as its more affordable, to learn the basics of forging.
Castro Smith is a hand engraver and jeweller based in London selling his jewellery range that combines both European and Eastern techniques. Castro sells his work with Dover Street Market and works on a bespoke commission basis.
Castro Smith is a London based jewellery artist who trained as an engraver in Japan. His technique is very niche and takes years to skill. I would like to take aspects of his work and try to recreate using wax carving. I love the use of plating the metal in contrasting colours. Castro is able to create very accurate carvings in the smallest detail. The ones that take particular interest are ‘hells gate’. These are carved to give the effect of sharp shards or a textured surface with the metal.
Enamelling- testing two blues.the longer the piece is left in the kiln- the shinier the finish. A short 30 seconds will give you a ‘sugar’ finish.
I am looking forward to experimenting more with this using colours as well as different textured surfaces.

Oxidisation- a concentrate of oxidising solution mixed with water to oxidise the silver. Using fibreglass to ‘key’ the surface, the liquid will tarnish the metal. The solution highlights the keyed surface, creating depth to the eroded design.
I found that if you use the fibreglass brush and oxidising solution multiple times it will cause the silver to oxidise more. The only impracticality too tarnishing the whole ring, is with wear the surface will naturally polish itself so would need oxidising frequently.

Cleaning up the rings after casting- To remove the sprues from casting they are sawn off. Then a file is used to smooth the surface. I learnt its best to keep as much of the sprue in one large piece as it can be melted down and reused.
LOST WAX CARVING- Here are a few photos of rings I have made in a smaller style. They are thinner, concentrating on a more conventional style. I used various tools including files, hot wax pens and engraving tools.
ANNEALING- The process of using heat in order to increase the ductility and reduce the hardness of a material. After cold working the material gains yield strength, therefore to help ‘relax’ the structure of the metal.
The metal is heated evenly until the piece reaches a cherry red colour, then quench the piece to continue working.

The process of lost wax casting is one id like to explore when making rings. The handmade shape made from the wax is then used to create a silver cast.
Polishing wax
The wax moulds are polished using the finest grit, working your way up to 3000. The use of water helps to polish the wax to be ready for casting.
Clova jewellery
I love the fluidity that these pieces give. This is a particular style I would like the try. I think with this style, the less you sculpt the wax and allow the material to show its characteristics, will give a more organic form.

This is a company based in London. These take my interest as they are more suggestive of the teeth rather than metal covering all the teeth.
Wax Casting Ring
Following the same process as the Grillz. I carved and sculpted a piece of wax to create a ring. I am going to do tests with enamels and colour. The aim is to hopefully enamel this ring. I have carved irregularly to see how the enamel with react with different depths.
Cast wax
Here is my first attempt with a finished cast piece. It consists of two tooth caps with inlay. A final polish will be done to take out any remaining scratches.
