Okay so what if the sides first came in as their core functions already there- Yknow, Creativity, Morality, Logic, and wtv headcannon you have for Virgil, for me it’s Caution -but then as new things and situations and ideas were introduced to Thomas, each side sorta “claimed” what other attributes they wanted.
For example, the first time Thomas finds a boy cute, Roman’s like “THIS ONE’S MINE” and now he also has romance.
Or Thomas finds interest in something in one of his classes, and Logan discovers curiosity.
Okay idk what this is but wtv
And maybe Thomas’s first ever big test is coming up and there’s this horrible negative feeling and energy that they’ve never had before. It keeps trying to attach to one of them, and Logan avoids it, and Roman is disgusted by it, and Patton looks sad and scared but he’s about to take it on for the others’ sakes.
And then Virgil shows up and gets between Patton and the energy, and it grabs him, and now Virgil is suffering but he’s the protecter so he had to do it for them.
And the space under his eyes gets darker and his warnings get more frantic, more afraid, and he’s no longer just cautious.
He did it for them.
AHHHHHHHH S O B B I N G 😭😭😭😭😭😭 i accept yes
BITCH NO
Virgil taking anxiety for them is sweet but also makes me sad but this is so good!
(It’s been about two years since I’ve posted anything on here, but I was going through my drafts and found this so I figured I’d share it.)
It was in 8th grade when it happened. March 27th. The day had been long and tiring as Thomas had stayed up all night studying for a major test. This could be the final nail in the coffin that decided if he graduated into High School.
It sounded simple, and yet inside his mind it was chaos. In the mindscape, the sides had watched as a negative trait grew in the middle of the Commons. It wasn’t a new thing to happen, new traits were common. They would grow before moving around, searching for one of the sides to latch onto.
See, they all started off with a base trait. Roman was created to be Creativity, Logan for Logic, Patton for Morality, and Virgil for Vigilance. As time passed and Thomas grew, new traits grew before the sides absorbed them and became something more complex than what they had started as.
Roman became Thomas’ passion and ego. Logan had become his curiosity and common sense. Morality had become his love of puns/dad jokes and basically his emotions. Virgil had only adopted one new trait, paranoia. The trait was fairly small and so it didn’t affect him too much, but it was easy to see that Virgil was not the same.
Now the four sides watched as a dark swirling mass grew in the middle of the room. It was terrifying. Negative traits rarely appeared and when they did they were never so…big.
This one was one of the largest traits they had seen, and it was still growing. Suddenly a snap echoed through the mindscape just as Thomas took his seat in class. The teacher had given each student their test paper at the door and now it was just a matter of completing it.
Inside his mind the negative trait started to slowly float towards Logan causing the other to calmly leave up the stairs, his frame tense. The swirling mass soon attempted to attach to Roman who sneered at it before making a run for the kitchen.
Nobody wanted a negative trait. Especially not one that big.
Virgil slowly pulled Patton away, up the stairs, hoping that the trait would latch onto one of the sides eventually. For now, it was best to avoid it at all costs. There was no telling what it could do or if it would harm them, and he didn’t really want to find out. Curiosity was Logan’s job.
And so the hours passed, Thomas finishing his test and going home. Then days passed, the trait floating aimlessly through the mindscape, desperately trying to find someone to attach to. It was almost sad.
Still they all avoided it like the plague. Logan hid in his room while Roman glared at it with hatred and stormed away to keep his distance from the swirling black mass. Patton had stared sadly at the dark mass early reaching out to absorb it only to be pulled away by Virgil.
Sadly, it was inevitable that one of them would eventually have to absorb the trait. Patton had decided enough was enough and decided that despite not wanting to, it was up to him to take on this new trait. Logan refused to even acknowledge it while Roman despised it with deep seated hatred. Virgil acted like it didn’t exist most times.
So, there he stood in front of the swirling mass of dark energy, tears in his eyes as he shook slightly with fear. It wasn’t fair, but it wasn’t fair to any of them to absorb this trait.
The others were all upstairs doing whatever they do and it was the perfect time to bond with the trait. Was being the operative word. Just as he had reached his hand out, the swirling mass floating towards him a scream echoed through the mindscape before a body was in front of him.
Patton gasped as he stared at the form of Virgil that was now encompassed in darkness. His body crumpled to the floor as he screamed and writhed in agony, the trait breaking him apart as it made it’s way inside of him.
He could only stare in horror as his friend shook with pain. The others must have heard the commotion as Roman flew down the stairs, eyes widening as he stared at the scene in front of him. Logan hurried down soon after, his hair a mess as he stared at Virgil’s form.
“What happened!?” His voice was calm, but it was easy to tell that the calmness was only a façade.
“I-” Just as Patton had opened his mouth to recite what had happened, Virgil let out a heart wrenching scream that shook all of them to the core.
Then, just like that he was gone. They all assumed the worst as they made their way upstairs, only to find his door locked. No sounds came from inside and Patton feared the trait had forced their friend to fade.
It took weeks for things to change. Weeks of mourning and anger for the trait that killed one of their fellow sides. But it eventually happened.
The sound of a door opening and closing alerted the three sides that sat on the couch in the commons. None of the other sides were allowed in this area without permission. So, who was upstairs?
The stairs creaked as the three boys stared at them with wide eyes. A dark lanky figure crept down with near silent footsteps, shoulders hunched and coated head to toe in black attire.
“…. Virgil?” Patton spoke causing the figure to freeze as his head snapped in Patton’s direction. His eyes were wide with fear and panic and it was easy to see that his breath was stuttering and becoming more rapid.
From that day on it was decided that Virgil was no longer Vigilance. Though they never thought it possible, the trait he absorbed completely shadowed his original purpose. Now they called him Anxiety.
It was that day that marked future years of hate and spite for being so negative. Such is the way of life. He didn’t mind though. The trait caused him hell and made every agonizing second of life painful, but he never regretted what he did. He was the protector, and he had done exactly his job, and he would do it all over again.
