It is exactly three weeks since we introduced worms to our vermicomposting plant at Rongai. We're impressed by the results so far. Having started with 2kg of worms per bed, we've noticed a drastic increase in both the juveniles and eggs within the worm-beds. The positive results have been as a result of incredible support and guidance from our assessor, Prof Luis Gillen. Earthworms are generally essential to sustainable agroecosystems. For a long time, earthworms have been directly utilised in promoting sustainable crop and fish production. However, attention is shifting to the use of earthworm products as biofertilisers, most importantly to solve challenge of organic waste. Among earthworm products and derivatives that are used in agriculture are vermicompost and vermifluid. Vermicompost, also referred to as earthworm casts or vermicast, are egested organic matter or organic matter-rich soil, that has passed through the alimentary canal of earthworms. They are potentially rich in digestive and plant growth-promoting enzymes and microorganisms, deposited onto them in the course of passage through the alimentary canal of earthworms. Vermicompost is widely used in organic farming in place of chemical fertilizers. Vermifluid is an earthworm fluid exudate that positively impacts plant growth and mitotic activities. The use of vermifluid or earthworm fluid as biofertilizer has the advantage of flexibility as it can be applied in the nursery and on the farm, in controlled dilutions or concentrations, to improve growth and germination. It contains plant nutrients and growth hormones that impact plant aerial growth in the natural ecosystem. When applied as a foliar spray on the farm, vermifluid increases the rate of photosynthesis in crop plants. I've always taken risk for the past 22 years; just to make as many mistakes as possible so as to learn from them. This is was just a 4 hrs or so training that redefine on how I viewed myself. Back in mid 2017, courtesy of @mshauri_yep; then Mshauri Trust Foundation. Allow me talk about giving yourself time to grow, for today 👌. Time is something we all seem to be short of yet its one of the commodities that give the most significant results. It takes time for a baby to grow, you don’t call a timeout because you don’t see results in the first two months. It takes time to change your life. It takes time to build your career; it takes time to grow, to learn, to develop and produce more significant results. Consider how long it takes to become a doctor, Becoming a doctor can take nine or more years of education and training: four years of undergraduate study, four years of medical school, plus one year or more in residency. To achieve great things realize that it takes time. If things aren’t working out right now, don’t give up, it’s just lag time. Stay committed, stay determined and keep moving forward. Since then, the journey has been inspiring. Founding @dream_rise_foundation that champions implementation of global goal on quality education, in line with lifelong learning. Uneasy past one week; Thank you so much to all friends and family who've been with and supported us in anyway. Shosh, you lived a life that was full of joy and happiness. Short: As we say goodbye to the August month and welcome September; it was a very blessed, special and fulfilling month. It started with my friend and team member @gitz1o1 graduation from Technical University of Kenya, followed by mom's birthday. Day's later, @njuguna_diana and I won a fellowship that will accelerate the grow of @golden_waste_initiative; to create lasting social impacts within communities in Kenya. This is something we've been working on since 7th December 2019. And finally, proud of one of my best friends @nzilani_muthio on securing admission at USIU through MCF and most recently the inspiring transition of @peter__wanjiru to Harvard College. There is so much inside you, and you have what it takes to make the most out of life! You are an embodiment of potentials and opportunities. Don't wait for life to make things happen for you, with your words, take yourself to the next level of your life by making things happen. Stop wishing you looked like someone else or wishing people like you as much as they liked someone else. That will only make you unhappy, and especially unhappy with yourself. Accept no one's definition of your life if it's inconsistent with God's definition of you; define yourself through God's word. The pen that writes your life's story must be held in your hands, particularly in your mouth. Refuse to be intimidated by life's challenges, no matter how tough they are, they'll bow to your destiny. Do that one thing you always want to do. At times you might feel very low, get discouraged, feel that you're so drained and even almost giving up. My take, keep going. You never know who's watching or following. When that opportunity presents itself, it might be the game changer and a redefining moment. Unfortunate thing is, most of us anticipate immediate results, forgetting that success is like a staircase. One step at a time. Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year B) Today had a chance to celebrate the Homily at my home church and I would like to reflect on Calming Life’s Storms. A violent squall came up and waves were breaking over the boat, so that it was already filling up. Jesus was in the stern, asleep on a cushion. They woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” He woke up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Quiet! Be still!” The wind ceased and there was great calm. Mark 4:37–39 This passage is what we may call a “prophetic action” on the part of Jesus. His action of calming the storm is a way of speaking to us about our own lives. The first thing to reflect upon is that Jesus was there in the center of the storm. He was on the boat while the waves came crashing over. But the key is that He was there. This tells us that whenever we experience a “storm” in our lives, Jesus is there in the midst of it. He is not far away; rather, He is right there. But we also notice that He is asleep. One thing we can take from this is that Jesus awaits our prayer. He waits for us to turn to Him in the midst of the storm. That must be our first thought whenever we feel overwhelmed or challenged by life’s circumstances. Notice that the “prayer” of the Apostles is similar to how we may pray at times. “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” So often we turn to God saying, “Lord, where are You? Why are You not helping?” But we should know that God is often silent as a way of calling us to Himself so that we turn to Him in trust and confidence. Jesus took their prayer and responded. His response was simply to manifest His authority over the storm. He rebuked it and said, “Quiet! Be still!” With that, the storm had no ability to continue and all was calm. We must know that Jesus did this so that we would have confidence that He can handle any hardship we face. There is no storm too great for Him. Nothing He cannot handle. Reflect, today, on what frightens you the most each day. What is it that shakes your faith? Weeeh😪😪😪. It's hitting different here in Nairobi with this lockdown stuff 😪😅😅😅😅. I've been wondering why I'm I experiencing this emptiness since on Sunday. For the past 14 years; I've never missed a mass on such a week (Holy Week). Besides, my holiday is always characterised by travels before ending up country for celebrations with the family. I'm always proactive in my local church (Sacred Heart of Jesus, Ntirimiti Catholic Church), on such occasion. Either being an Altar Server and/or taking part in readings, especially the Psalm or the Long today's Gospel 😌❤. It's such a vibe😅. I think this what has created the whole difference 😅😅😅. I have had that feeling of some things not adding up. Well, let's hope and pray for everything to improve because this emptiness, it's not welcoming 😅. That aside, with my team of passionate volunteer mentors at @dream_rise_foundation , we are anticipating the establishment of the resource center. This project is going to be implemented in two phases: Phase 1 : Establishment of the Community Library. Phase 2 : Establishment of the ICT Hub. For the Library, we're looking forward to having its launch done come August this year, while for the ICT Hub, since it's going to need a lot of funding, we're hoping to have achieved the objective by end of December next year. Grab some popcorns🍿; Royfiey has a story of a baby girl😌😂😂. Let's get to 2010 when Dr. Babe joined me at Mary Mother of God Primary School. A very humble, hardworking and generous person she was. I don't know of her personal goals then, but I know she was that person very passionate to support students that needed her support. As students, coming from one of the most minority community in the region, she always motivated and pushed us to work harder. I will highlight only three lessons I can draw from her; 1. She kept me on toes to ensure that I delivered the set targets. Gave me assignments, marked them for me and corrected me where I went wrong. (We used to have motivation bread for the top best students; a program by the school to motivate students to exploit their potentials. She always wanted me to take almost every 😅😅😅When I happened to miss, she would encourage me to keep on pushing) 2. It might sound unfamiliar, but I had inadequate of reading and revision materials while at Primary School. Upon completion of her Primary School Education Level, she invited me at her home to pick the books that she was using. Her notes, revision books and text books. All that she requested was for me to utilize them fully and take good care of them. ( I later as well gave someone else these books, including those that Mom had bought for me) 3. She happened to secure admission to Starehe Girls Center. To me, this was a great motivation that yes, coming from a very humble background, we can work our way up the ladder and secure admission to some of the best schools in the country. Anyway, Education after all is the greatest equalizer. While at primary school, we used to have friendly conversation to motivate each other, and she vividly knew I was working hard to join Starehe Boys' Center. Although I didn't make to secure the opportunity, I joined Nairobi School, that shaped and equipped me with networks and skills that I live to benefit from even to date. Thank you for always keeping check on me and aligning me when needed. I could draw many lessons from her. But today is her day, Congratulations @rosekim_onye .
