Indie Game Spotlight: RPG Time:Â The Legend of Wright
And weâre back with your fave, another Indie Game Spotlight! This week we are talking RPG Time: The Legend of Wright (@rpgtimes). This epic adventure begins with a child in elementary school who wants to be a game developer. Schoolâs out, but he stays sitting in the classroom and creates a role-playing game, packed with surprising ideas, in his notebookâall drawn by hand!
We chatted with development director Tom Fujii about the game he has been developingâin a team with only one other developerâfor over six years.Â
How did the team come up with the concept behind the game?
The concept came from memories of a childhood spent making and playing handmade games with friends. Those times of creating and playing handmade games were very special to me. We started developing the game because we want to share that wonderful experience with many people.
Do you have any major influences?
I still love childrenâs play picture books like Choose Your Own Adventure, Whereâs Wally?, I SPY, and the Japanese childrenâs magazine Syougaku Ichinensei (âfirst graderâ). In Japan, we value games that can be played in the classroom. Our elementary schools had many analog games for learning in class, and many handmade games were passed down among children. Having had access to video games from a very early age, we are also greatly influenced by those that we have loved since childhoodâRPG is irreplaceable.
Many people have commented that the gameplay trailer brings them a sense of nostalgia. What else do you hope people take away from the game?
The fact that people from different countries and generations commented that they felt nostalgic about our work was a surprise and a delight! Perhaps the experience of playing with a notebook and pencil in the classroom is common to all humanity. RPG Time: The Legend of Wright combines nostalgia with innovative gameplay and challenges expressed in new ways. Itâs packed with a lot of different ideas, just like a rush hour train!
What are some gameplay mechanics used in RPG Time: The Legend of Wright?
There is a mechanism that we call âGame-in-Game Developer.â He not only creates games but also plays along and takes on the role of game master in âTable Talk RPG,â guiding the player through various games. The general foundation of RPG Time: The Legend of Wright is RPG, but we have included many different types of games within, such as action, puzzle, adventure, shooter, boardgame, escape game, etc.Â
If you could take anything out of your game into the real world, what would it be and why?
We have been asking ourselves how we have managed to continue developing this game for so many years, but we recently came upon the answer. Itâs because the boy who handcrafts The Legend of Wright has a passion for creativity that has taught us the joy of making games and the pleasure of playing. People who play this game may also want to create a gameâif you receive it, we recommend that you follow that impulse!
