Okay time for another slytherin ramble, but a little different this time bc this character is commonly sorted into slytherin, and this is a celebration of that.

Zoya Nazyalensky. fuckin LOVE this girl, like seriously you have no idea. She is vicious and harsh and arrogant and ambitious and cunning — which are all (stereotypical) slytherin things, so it makes sense that people would sort her into slytherin. BUT, the reason it is so special to me that she is sorted into slytherin is because people do it EVEN THOUGH she is shown to have such compassion, shown to be a protector, shown to be loyal, and shown to be so brave. Do you know how rare that is? That a character who is genuinely good and genuinely compassionate be sorted into slytherin by their fandom?!

Zoya protects bear cubs when she is a child from a giant male bear, gets hurt, but fricking SURVIVES it. But she still protected those cubs — saved them from those she was on the journey with, actually — she still saved them out of compassion. AND YET PEOPLE SORT HER INTO SLYTHERIN!!!

She does much more like this (I’m just too tired to write it all out rn), and people still sort her into slytherin! And as a slytherin who considers themselves to be very compassionate and brave at points (like I would one hundred percent save those bear cubs), it makes me so happy that people can still recognize that she’s a slytherin regardless of those actions that most would consider to be gryffindor (even though they aren’t, the way she does them is very slytherin), and it just warms my scheming slytherin heart.

OKAY BITCHES I’m making another Slytherin Inej Ghafa post, bc everyone thinks she’s a gryffindor and so I’m going to flood the internet with my opinion to convert people and no one can stop me. Also I have the authority on this bc I am a slytherin so there

You wanna know WHY this wonderful girl is a slytherin instead of a gryffindor?

Because Gryffindor does not own morality.

Everyone automatically places characters who want to help people or have any amount of bravery into either Hufflepuff or Gryffindor, BUT GUESS WHAT? Nowhere does it say that only those two houses have morals, or that Slytherins can’t have morals Or compassion.

Slytherins are also very brave — Snape is brave, even if I dislike him I can still give credit where it’s due. Regulus fucking Black is crazy brave, and no one acknowledges that. But they are brave in a way that is more thoughtful instead of impulsive in the average Gryffindor way. They think before they leap, and they only leap if they consider it necessary.

Sound like anyone we know yet? Yeah, Inej. This girl has nerves of steel, yes, but in a much more Slytherin way. It’s because she *refuses to lose*.

When she’s fighting, it’s because she refuses to lose, refuses to be taken down without taking down her attackers either. That’s a slytherin amount of pride and spite, if you ask me.

You wanna know what else makes her a slytherin? She’s fiercely determined, and ambitious. When she’s climbing the furnace, what gets her out? Realizing she has a goal she wants to accomplish. She realizes she wants to help other girls and people who were in her situation — and not only that, she wants to bring the slavers down to their knees. That last part especially makes her seem even more slytherin.

More examples of ambition? How she continued to try and try and try again to get good at the tightrope as a child.

How she refuses to let Kaz dissuade her from anything, even loving him, and she refuses to let loving him keep her from her ambition, and instead learns how to handle both.

How she fights for her freedom and autonomy, even with morally gray actions, even through killing.

She’s also very cunning and clever, and a bit of an opportunist. This is shown through her general spying skills, and how she offered to help Kaz when she thought it would get her out of the Menagerie. She’s also the only person to have ever outwitted Kaz. We see it in her fight with Dunyasha, how she’s resourceful.

So, morality and compassion do not a Gryffindor make. Inej is a Slytherin and I will die on this hill.

Because while yes, she is more moral than Kaz, and she has fought hard to keep her compassion and kindness intact whereas he rejected his, and she’s more openly warm, I think we often forget just how vicious and clever and morally gray she is as well.

She cried when she first killed someone, yes, but she didn’t let it stop her from pursuing her freedom.

SHE GOT A FUCKING BUTCHER TO CUT OFF HER TATTOO FROM THE MENAGERIE WITH ONLY A MOUTHFUL OF WHISKEY FOR THE PAIN.

She climbed a furnace not just for Kaz, but for her own ambition, because she had something she wanted, she found a purpose and she wouldn’t let weakness get in her way.

And also keep in mind that goal of hers is to hunt down and kill slavers. Which, like, is so fucking vicious and I love that about her.

When the gang was beating the shit out of Kaz, her whole monologue about ‘piling their bodies to the rafters’ was just as intense as Kaz.

She is the ONLY person to have ever outsmarted Kaz Brekker, truly.

For fucks sake, this is the girl who fought another woman on the roof of a church (or smthn, been a bit since I read that) and when that other girl gave a whole ass speech about how Inej had ‘spilled the blood of kings she wasn’t worthy of that blah blah blah’ Inej our bitch just straight up went ‘okay and?’

Also, this girl has PRIDE. Is she more humble than Kaz? Yeah, but also ‘Ghana’s don’t use nets >:(‘ like excuse me she was just straight up NOT having that.

This girl fights with her teeth, uses her mind and fierce determination to get what she wants, doesn’t always use moral ends, and fought to keep her kindness as well. So yes, she is kind. But she is just as fierce and sharp as Kaz.

My favorite thing about this series is the multi-faceted characters. Inej is kind and has strong moral fiber, but she has grit and is willing to fight, kill, and deceive to do the right thing; just as Kaz is cold, calculating, and utterly ruthless, but has a strong sense of right and wrong and a surprising amount of compassion for the downtrodden.

Okay I’m actually so happy for this addition because of what you said about Kaz. I was going to make a separate post about this another time, but now I’m excited so I’ll just do it now.

KAZ HAS COMPASSION! Does he have nearly as much as the other crows? That could be put up for some debate, but I think he does have a strong sense of compassion even if he handles it differently/won’t acknowledge it.

This is a boy who was horrifically left to die alone, to suffer, and no one cared because he was not rich, or powerful, or otherwise what his society would deem as ‘important’. He was left without a family, he was left to fight and do horrible things just to survive on his own. And this turns him into a monster, it turns him into something ruthless and twisted — but it does NOT take away his sense of justice/right or wrong. It does not strip him entirely of his ideals.

Kaz Reitveld died alone, having watched his brother die. Kaz Brekker becomes one of the lowest of the low in the Barrel — a child with no attachment, someone shunned by society. So what does Kaz Brekker do? How does he react to this? Well, just look at how he manages the Dregs.

He takes in the underdogs of the Barrel. He gives those who have something to prove a chance, an opportunity to obtain control over their lives, and — this is the important part — a *home*. A *family*. The very thing he lost, that he knows many of *them* have lost.

He joins the gang specifically called ‘the Dregs’. He *wants* to be around those who have been cast out by society, who have been wounded like him, he wants to be allied with them.

He would frame this purely as pragmatism, I’m sure. Because it’s true that those who have been hurt the most, who have the most to prove often turn out to be the most vicious and ambitious of people, at least a lot of the time. So if anyone tried to prove this as evidence of his dying compassion, he would frame it merely as allying himself with those who would do anything to get what they needed. But I think that that is very not true by the way he goes about things.

Does he still do heinous things? Absolutely. Is he still cold and cruel? Yes. But, the way he views it is that it is *necessary*.

Also, a little bonus point of Kaz’s sense of compassion is the talk he has with Wylan when they’re breaking into the safe. He didn’t have to reassure Wylan at all. He could have ignored and avoided that entire conversation. But the way Kaz shows his compassion is by showing others the power they truly possess, and by showing them how to avoid losing it. He does it by enabling others to grow into their strength.

And, even if he’s definitely not a good person, I think that that’s is actually a beautiful way to show compassion. Even if, again, I don’t think he’d acknowledge it.

You’re not bothered?? I’m not only not bothered, I’m freaking invested. I’m having actual empathetic sadness for The Grinch. I want them to go into couple’s counseling. I want the “ten years later” when Tony visits Whoville on business and meets the reformed Grinch whose heart has grown 3 times its usual size. I want them to reminisce over a shared dinner of roast beast and wine, then spend a drunken night together, then realize that maybe things are different and people really do change. I want a 3-act story where there’s a long dark night of soul searching and the realization that maybe we’ve all got a little bit of bad banana with greasy black peel inside us, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make a damned fine banana bread if someone will give us a chance.
