Paris holds the key to your heartâŠ
âYeah, kinda does.â Kovu teased, even though it was far from the truth. âThatâs a white people thing and you know it.â He pointed threateningly at Dimitri. âAl though it might piss off Remy to see you with me, donât worry. Loosing you as my informer isnât worth it, even if getting a reaction out of him would be fun. How is he doing, by the way? Havenât seen him since we had dinner two weeks ago.â
âWhat does ethnicity have to do with leashing a brat like you?â Dimitri chuckled, finding the idea of tugging a mob boss around town by leash quite amusing. He went still at the mention of Remy, only for a short time. Seriously? This kid was either a true fool or foolishly brave to ask Dimitri about his families rival. Kovu didnât actually think heâd get a straight answer out of Dimitri, did he? âOh... heâs floundering about, much like you.â
Joseph nodded curtly âGood, good.â He said in his usual, soft-spoken voice. âUh, well, yesâ I have a new⊠doctor, and the office happens to be just a bit further down this street.â He cleared his throat and offered a polite smile âI suppose weâll run into one another from time to time.â
Dimitri slipped his hands into the front pockets of his dark jeans and bit his lower lip thoughtfully. A new doctor. Detective Oda was just full of issues, wasnât he? The forger, thief, and con man was anxious to learn which physician Joseph would be visiting from here on out, but that would only require asking a few questions around the neighborhood. No one would be the wiser. âIt wouldnât surprise me, detective, but I do hope the best for your health.â He leaned his shoulder up against the neighboring wall and gave a cat like smile. âIf you ever need a hand or company, donât be a stranger, Iâm the guy who helps after all.â

âYouâre right there,â Henrik admitted, as he licked his lips, thinking for a moment before replying to the last question. âNot really. Itâs actually my thing. Again, I love animals, and I am a nerd for science and zoology. So being a vet just feels like the right career for me. I need the degree so thatâs why school.â
He smirks, âOh, I see. That would take a couple thousand dollar books and tools to master.â It was lucky Dimitri never had a hint of interest in healing--the surgical kind at least. He could fair well with a needle, thread, and a first aid kit, but Henrikâs education was clearly more involved. âI suppose all that matters is that youâre happy after all of this.â His words dripped with sarcasm, he could guess a boy like Henrik was in debt, especially since his family werenât proponents of higher education.
âI am flattered for your concern regarding my personal hygiene. And honestly? It is getting exhausting already, but well, same story has been in the last semester of every school year so I cannot complain much.â
âHygiene isnât so personal, kid, the city already smells like piss so every bit helps.â Dimitri chuckled to himself. âWhy school anyway? Your family pressure you into it?â
âOkay, I take care of dogs in an almost daily basis, but that doesnât mean I do not take showers, you know?â
âYouâre doing yourself a favor as much as youâre doing one for me. How is school treating you?â
âItâs actually relaxing, you know? I love animals, so it does not bother me. Guess itâs just my thing, bud.â
âYes. I guess so. As long as you donât go around smelling like a dog I will find some capacity to forgive you.â
âThanks..? I mean, it is harder to clean up a dogâs mess than, a catâs for example. Cats just need their litter and thatâs all, dogs are a whole other thing. One gets practice over time, though.â
âI donât know how you can stand spending day after day with either, Henrik, I really donât.â

Joseph straightened his tie and inclined his head âRight, sorryâ uh, thank you.â He offered a hesitant smile âI trust youâre doing well, mister Burkov.â
âNever been better, detective.â The Russian fibbed with a usual grin. âI would have never guessed youâd come anywhere near my building again after our first encounter. Are you looking for directions or... are you right where you mean to be?â
âAnd we are. Iâm paying you good money so I can drink your whiskey and chat. Instead of being followed by Tweedledee and Tweedle dumbfuck out there.â He gestured out the window. âWhy do you always have to say call me kid. Because it doesnât make me sound young, just makes you sound old.â Kovu blinked a fake innocent look at Dimitri as he sipped from the glass of whiskey. To be honest Kovu actually enjoyed these banters, the teasing between the two of them. If he even tried something like that at home it would end with some getting a butter knife thrown at them.Â
âWell text whoever you want, work. I just need a place to breatheâŠâ Kovu leaned back into the leather couch, still drinking from his glass.
âDoes it?â Dimitri muttered, feigning interest toward Kovuâs sass. He certainly wasnât getting any younger but at least his age didnât physically show in his face. And certainly not his body.
âI plan to. ânot really one for day trips, especially with you; Iâd have to buy a safety harness for toddlers before taking that kind of risk.â That certainly wasnât the biggest problem. Should Dimitri be seen in public with Kovu Luciano, many local ties, that happened to include the Genovese family, would not be impressed. As much as Dimitri loved to know all about others he could never let such people know of his own life and secrets. information had to be treated delicately, the very reason this city needed a man like Dimitri Burkov around.
âYouâre getting paid better than average to begin with, so donât start that with me.â Kovu shoots the informer a smirk, stroking his palm over the sleeve of his jacket. âI think Iâll refer to myself as dapper whenever I chose. Dimi. So you got something good for me today?â
Humming a low chuckle Dimitri digressed. Babysitting had never been in his list of services, but money from Kovuâs family spoke louder than Dimitriâs twisted conscience--whatever was left of it. âIâm present, physically, and thatâs saying a lot. What else do you want from me, kid? Our agreement was to, and I quote, hangout sometime.â He was inventing down time, for a multi-talented criminal informant there was always work to be done.
âIt is. Prada. Worth more than what some people pay for a car. Sick.â Kovu took a little turn, showing off his new jacket.âKinda like it, makes me look all fuckinâ dappper and shit.â
âShould I be asking for a raise?â Dimitri grinned, offering a short glance while he wrote a text on his mobile. âDapper... yeah, you shouldnât use that word again, hot stuff.â
