The last leg, Yorkshire marathon 2018, 16 and done...for now đââď¸
All week at work it had dragged, all I could think about was Sunday, I was weirdly excited about it all week, really couldnât wait!!!!! I had everything planned, what I was taking, gels, drinks, clothes and what I was going to do and eat all day Saturday. Finally we were here.
I woke up around 5am Sunday, and began the religious preparation I go for through for any race, overnight oats is the key one!!! Today was different as all my family was coming along and Sarah (Stephâs sister) was running the 10mile event.
We were all ready and out the house by 630am...and it was chucking it down!!!!! The last race and the weather was horrendous, out of 16 races I had been blessed for 15, seems the power that be had other ideas for this one đ.
So we arrived at the park and ride and it was rammed! We also missed our allotted time to get on the bus and inside I was beginning to panic! But we ended up just walking onto a bus and taking the short 15minite ride to the uni. The weather was getting worse at this time. I had managed to plaster all bits of my feet that may blister, I felt confident but nervous now, I new I had done all the training, but the weather had me thinking!!!!!
My friend, Helena was running, I had been messening her most of the morning, and managed to bump into her before the start, it was nice to see a familiar and reassuring face!
So to the start I went, in the driving rain, as I was crossing the bridge I heard the gun go off and I thought I had missed the start, was just the start of the wheelchair race...few! I was supposed to be in zone 2, but couldnât get anywhere near this and ended up in zone 5. As we started I spent the first 4/5 miles battling to a position where I was running with people my pace. I also managed to pass Helena and have a few minutes talking with her, which was nice as it broke the run up abit.
Running through York was beautiful, but somehow I missed the minster đ. The rain was still relentless. The route was actually ok until around 16miles, I felt good and strong at this point, I just got disheartened here. This section doubled back on it self, so you had runners either side. I was running well and thinking we will be turning back shortly, but it kept going on, I then saw a sign on the other side that said â19milesâ!!! There was still another 2 to the turn then another two back to the top đđđ. So I regrouped and got my head down and plodded on. That section was hard, but just after 19 I saw H again!
20miles....wow what a wall!!! I literally started to cramp up due to the cold, I quickly smashed two GU Gels and that eased the pain!!! I had the ring Steffi as well for a pep talk, the was amazing during this, she rang me three times between 20 and 25 to get me going and it was awesome to hear such a kind, loving, supportive and reassuring voice.
I also strongly had two full on proper panic attackâs at 21 & 23 miles. I just got really emotionally and couldnât breath, I donât know how but I managed to get it then under control quickly and carry on running...I didnât want to stop!!!
Just as I thought it was nearly over, at 25.5 there was a hill, a bloody hill!!!! I was barely running as it was, I think I may as well crawled up that hill haha, but then over it was the finishing line, such a beautiful site! No sprint today, just a stagger over the line...so I thought. I cramped up with 50metres to go, WTF!!!! I couldnât move, every time I did I nearly fell over. I managed to get to railing and the support was amazing, I was stretching and stretching but nothing was easing up, an amazing lady gave me her lucozade which helped massively! So I tried again, nope! Then someone shouted run over the line backwards. I remember doing this in a precocious half and it helped...so I ran over the line backwards to massive cheers lol. It was quite a buzz.
I managed to find my family which was amazing at the end, but I could barely speak or stand, I wasnât much company lol.
Then it hit...I was soooooooo cold! I got my free isotonic, and normally I take pictures and do my video, but I just couldnât do anything, I was violently shivering and think was starting to go into shock. Me, the boys and Steffi managed to get back to a changing tent, we met Sarah there. There were both amazing, Sarah entertained the kids and Steph proper sorted me out, I couldnât change myself let alone think haha, she dried me off and dressed me. I was still sooooooo cold! I even fell asleep on the bus journey back to the car!
And to finish off we had a nice meal at chamos Brazilian bar in Beverley with family and friends, I ate soooooo much!
This last week has been awesome, I took 3 days off to rest, and then went back on my bike Thursday and first run was Friday, just a short 2 miles.
So thatâs it, the end! Itâs been an amazing journey since March and I have loved every second of it, am gutted itâs over tbh! But 2019 brings new challenges and hopefully the 2019 London marathon, I find out Monday 22nd!!! Fingers crossed.
Much love everyone, you have all been awesome!!!!
