ââIâm happy for you,â he told her. She sighed. âDonât tell me that.â âWhat? Why not?â he asked. âBecause,â she said, âI donât want you to be happy for me. I want you to say âforget himâ â that itâs supposed to be me and you. I want you to sweep me off my feet and take me somewhere far away so that itâs only us. I want you to say you still love me and you never stopped.â She rolled her eyes. âScrew âhappy for you,â I want you to fight for me. I want you to win.ââ

âSo glad Iâm only sixth year, just looking at all these cocky seventh years realising that this is end is sort of cathartic. Knowing I have another year until I even reach this level of stress.âÂ
âYou say that now, Black,â Augustus started, turning to face Sirius with a smirk on his face, âbut you havenât the slightest idea..â He trailed off, chuckling, and shook his head. âItâs alright, though. No need to fuss over it now while youâre at peace. You can just say youâre gonna miss me, Iâll say it back, and weâll both pretend we meant it.â

Wandering the halls, Augustus was in his own little world as his fingers traced over the stone walls, following the path he took through the castle. âIâm sure gonna miss this place,â he muttered to himself. The sound of something, likely someone, behind him, though, brought him from his reverie. âAlright, there?â
ââDo you love her?â âYes.â âHow do you know?â âBecause nothing makes sense without her.ââ

She tried not to show the brief flash of amusement at his snarky comment, instead she cleared her throat. Everything inside her was telling her to just walk away. She had managed this long, who knew that maybe after a couple more months sheâd be no longer hung up on him.Â
But she found herself unable to move any more, but the distance between them was enough to make her feel more comfortable, although her hand instantly started to play with the cuff of her sleeve.Â
âIsnât everything already done between us? I thought I made my intentions quite clear.â she replied, voice void of much emotion. âI donât see how we can come back from all of this, so perhaps itâs just better we get everything out and go our separate ways. School ends soon, after that weâre free to move on with our lives without being forced into this closed environment.â
âYou did make your intentions clear, Skeets. You did,â he agreed, nodding. He shifted on the ground, twisting around until he was facing her properly, though he did not rise from his spot on the ground. If she didnât want to come closer, he wasnât going to send her running by closing the distance himself; he wasnât a total moron. âBut I never really got the chance to make mine clear,â he added. âThough, I can understand that you may not want to know my intentions. All the same, Iâd like the chance to make them clear, as well. I know yours, but you donât know mine. Not really.â He gave her an easy smile, leaning back on his hands once more, the way heâd been doing before sheâd come up.
âI think we can come back from this, Skeets, and truthfully, though I know youâre right, and it would likely be easier, I donât want to go our separate ways.â He tilted his head for a moment, taking a long look at Rita, and feeling nothing but fondness for her. âI know, I know, it sounds impossible, and crazy, I get that. You want him, I want you, how could we possibly bounce back from that? Itâs easy,â he said. âIâm not going to interfere with your relationship. Weâve been best mates for a long time, Skeets, and Iâm not willing to let that go. Iâm not willing to let my feelings get in the way of it, either. Iâm not fooling myself, I know I missed all of my chances. Thatâs something I have to deal with, but it doesnât mean that we should miss out on the beautiful future we had planned out. Visits and vacations, New York City and the Ministry of Magic; weâre going to do big things, Skeets, youâre going to do big things. I still want to share that with you. I still want to share the adventures, and the stories, and the craziness. I want to have busy weeks, and read rambling letters about yours. I want to pop in for a surprise visit, and meet you in the office after a long day in a long week in a long month to cap it all off with a drink because the both of us are very busy people, and maybe your last letter sounded like you just needed a taste of home. I want to be there for all of it, Skeets, thatâs my intention; to share my life with you the way we planned. At the end of every day, the only person I want to talk to about everything that happened is you. That hasnât changed throughout all of this, and itâs not going to change just because we leave the castle and try to go our separate ways.â

It had been two months and twenty eight days, thirteen hours and twenty two minutes since they had argued. Not that she was counting. Since they had stopped speaking to each other, apart from that one night after the game, when she had drunkenly sought out to find him, only to walk away when things had got too much. Although she never let it show, she was hurting. Every time she saw him in the corridor or in a shared lesson, she could feel the pull towards him, wanting to be near him, next to him.Â
But she was stubborn and things were back on track with Peter and she was determined to make it work. Even if it meant burying down the feelings she long fought to keep dormant. She liked Peter, he was good for her and she wanted to give it a shot, even if they only had months left. But Augustus, despite her feelings was also her best friend and the months had felt lonely without him by her side.Â
She found herself trailing out to the grounds, she was on top of her workload and wanted to enjoy her free period. She had grabbed some pieces of fruit and began the walk down to the lake. She had seen Augustus head out this way, although she didnât know what she would say or even if she wanted to see him, if she was asked, she would deny following him. It was almost pathetic, borderline stalking. She kept looking around her, trying to see a flash of brown hair and black and blue robes. There were numerous students out, enjoying the beginning of summer. Continuing on her way, she reached the lakeside and suddenly stopped in her tracks. Oh. There he was. She dropped the apple in her hand, it falling to the pebbled ground with a dull thud. Okay, she wasnât prepared for this.Â
âBollocks.â she hissed, instantly turning on the spot to try and walk away.

Two months, twenty eight days, thirteen hours, twenty two minutes, and forty seven seconds and even his cat was tired of his sulking. Heâd seen Rita, of course; it was hard not to when they shared so many classes, and knew each otherâs study and revision schedules, even if they werenât studying together. And Augustus, if you asked him, which no one had bothered to, would tell you that he wasnât sulking. Augustus would tell you that everything was fine, and there was nothing to worry about. He would lie directly to your face.
That afternoon, when even Lucifur wanted nothing to do with him, found Augustus shore-side, down by the lake, soaking up the sun and pretending that everything was the way it was supposed to be; at this juncture in the year, all he could do was try to enjoy what little time he had left at the castle. Heâd said a lot, or, heâd tried to, and sheâd walked away from him before he really got the opportunity to fully flesh out what it was heâd been trying to say. That had been fair, heâd decided; she was drunk, and wholly unprepared for a chat of that magnitude. Now, though, awkward as it would likely be, Augustus really just wanted the chance to patch things up before they graduated, even if it meant he had to swallow everything else down. She was happy with Peter, and he knew that, could see it for himself, and it was smarter, really, to just accept that things really were what theyâd claimed all along- he and Rita were best mates, and nothing more.Â
With a sigh, he shifted, leaning back on his hands as he surveyed the water, willing himself to clear his mind. It was like heâd conjured her up out of wishful thinking, though; he felt her presence before he heard her, smelt the familiar scent that was purely Rita, and for a moment, he couldnât help himself, smirking as he replied to her soft curse with a, âWell, you know I prefer Augustus, Gus, or Rookie, but I suppose just this once I could make an exception.â He twisted slightly, removing one hand from the ground as he looked back at her over his shoulder.
âDonât go, Skeets,â he said simply. âItâs been long enough, donât you think? Mock if you must, but I miss you. And I think we both know that if you walk away right now, thatâs us done for good. I canât have that. I promised you forever, and I meant it. Give me one more chance to keep that promise. Please.â
i donât want to. youâre not that nice to me and youâre weird.

Frustrated and angry, Regulus marched to his seat and sat abruptly, his face dropping, along with his stomach, at the snap! that accompanied his quick action. âPlease donât be my wand. Or my quillâŠâ
âWould you rather it be your pride, perhaps? Or your dignity?â Augustus asked slyly, turning to grin at Regulus. He was only teasing, and he knew that unlike some of the Blacks, Regulus could at least recognize a joke when he heard one. âOoh, maybe youâre getting fat,â he suggested, âand you broke the seat.â

"Not you, too,â he groused quietly, sighing as his book was knocked out of his hands by the cat laying on his stomach. âWhy are you being so needy, today?â he asked Lucifur, paying no attention to anyone who might have been around him. âWhat, didnât get enough head scratches from the girls?â he continued. He wasnât mad at his cat, he could never be, and a little smile graced his face as his fingers toyed with the catâs ears. âAlright then, come on. Up here.â He patted his chest, laying his book aside to give the cat his full attention.

The contrary part of Severus (composing roughly 3/4th of him) Â wanted to point out that Augustus was arriving on time and therefore his rambling explanation was neither required nor appreciated. The more efficient part of himself realized that it was probably too early to start an argument just for the fun of it when they were to be be stuck together. He didnât have anything particularly against Augustus anyway, so he could reign himself in. At least a bit.Â
âSo ready.â He replied in a dull tone, immediately taking a step back to a distance he was more comfortable with. âLetâs get outside, so I can chain smoke while I reveal surprising truths about being more of a cat person or whatever.âÂ
Augustus chuckled, shaking his head. âWell, look, thatâs already one thing we have in common,â he said lightly. âNow, maybe, this wonât be like growing bones.â He chuckled again, gesturing for Severus to lead on to whichever spot on the ground he would prefer. âIâm a cat person myself,â he admitted amiably. âNever thought I was, until a cat adopted me. Heâll probably pop up at some point, he doesnât usually let me too far out of his sight.â
He walked with Severus, taking a moment to scan over the things he âknewâ about Severus in his head; most of the information was secondhand and arbitrary, the opinions of other people. Augustus truthfully had never spent too much time with the Slytherin, aside from when Lily had brought him to Slug Club meetings, and, he was all too aware that the Slytherins were often unfairly awarded a poor reputation. âIâm sure youâll be just as surprised by some of my truths,â he offered, speaking again.Â
