P!ATD’s first tour was announced in summer 2005 while they were still in the studio. Acceptance was the headlining band and the other opening bands were Cartel, Augustana, and The Receiving End of Sirens. The first night of this tour was the third show that P!ATD had ever played – their second show had happened while they were driving from Vegas to Baltimore to start this tour. So they were pretty green and this season was all sorts of adorable…

P!ATD was often the first band to play each night, but they were bumped up to third billing at the Vegas show so they could play a little longer in their hometown.

Their usual set lasted for around 20 minutes and fit about 5 songs. They opened with The Only Difference and typically stuck with IWSNT, Nails for Breakfast, and Time to Dance. Esteban or BIBIYD were the other songs most often thrown in the mix. They weren’t playing Camisado much at this point and told a few fans that that they were still trying to figure out how to play that live.

The band relied a lot on Spencer’s iPod for backing tracks since they didn’t have touring musicians yet.

Brendon had done a lot of keyboard stuff during the band’s first couple shows, but Spencer said they realized “it was almost like it was a more entertaining show if he was just the lead singer and didn’t have to hide behind an instrument.”

Matt Squire had invited The Receiving End of Sirens to a bbq that summer when AFYCSO was being recorded and he told them to take P!ATD under their wing. Nate Patterson sometimes played guitar during Nails for Breakfast (pictures + a video).

Ryan turned 19 during this tour, Spencer turned 18, and Brent turned 18. Brendon was already 18.

Ryan talked to Upbeet Music about being on tour for his birthday: “Birthdays were never a really huge deal in my family so it’s not like I’m bummed out that I didn’t get a party or anything so it’s cool. I actually have a lot more friends now then I ever did. So I got a lot of happy birthdays today.”

The guys were in their van with a trailer. They had to set up their gear & mics themselves and Spencer tuned his own drums. So they might have shot to the top ridiculously quickly, but they did have some experience on a “normal” tour.

Brent had been to Canada, but otherwise it sounded like the other guys hadn’t done much traveling before this year. They all really loved seeing the Pacific Northwest… it seemed like they gushed over the weather & trees every time they played a show in that region ha.

The band paid for this tour with money that their parents lent them and slept in their van (most of the time).

I was offered a ticket for this tour & my mom didn’t let me go, but I remember it being pretty affordable… like under $10. And I think the t-shirts at their merch table were around $10 too (the green dinosaur shirt + white shirt with the yellow kite are from this tour).

P!ATD merch also showed up in FBR’s webstore during this tour.

Dan was their merch guy from the start and was also in a tour manager role & whatever else they needed.

At this point the band was able to hang out by their merch table or by their van and chat with fans for hours (if they didn’t have to be to a city super far away the next day). There were a lot of stories of kids going to restaurants with the band and goofing around for a decent chunk of time.

The guys seemed to be genuinely surprised that anyone wanted their autograph haha. A ton of fans reported that the guys were all incredibly kind & funny, but very shy. They weren’t used to people knowing who they were yet.

The internet was still a strange concept to some adults, so it was funny watching older journalists trying to explain how people could possibly find music online.

Spencer was still the super responsible one dealing with some of the business aspect of the band.

Brendon was in dressy clothes for the band’s first shows… he did wear jeans for some of the earlier shows on this tour, but he was in nicer clothes again once the tour stopped in Vegas. He only wore a t-shirt onstage for a show where the venue had no AC and got super hot. He also tended to change his sweaty clothes after getting offstage, so that’s why a lot of fan pictures will have Ryan in super dressy clothes with Brendon in jeans & a t-shirt. But yeah – the whole band was into dressing up right from the start.

Ryan’s & Spencer’s early band bios

Here are their earlier bios! I think these are Pet Salamander bios, but there’s a chance they were from the start of The Summer League. I don’t remember which site they were pulled off of and I only saved the files as “old.” And I might still have Brent’s somewhere but I really doubt I would’ve hung onto that (or even saved it in the first place in the early Fever-era since I never had a strong sense of him or cared as much). Panic! at the Disco playing the first song they wrote together at one of their earliest live shows… vs the final time they ever played together.

It’s late afternoon in the Nevada Desert and Panic! at the Disco are, if not dicing with death, at least risking a nasty bump… the quartet have decided to amuse themselves by getting strapped into dune buggies and racing around the deserts outside their hometown at 50mph.

… the hazards here are plentiful: rocks and rusting cars dot the landsape. When the shadows lengthen, bobcats and rattlesnakes lie in wait for any unsuspecting arena rock dandies. “Oh great, we’re all going to die,” moans guitarist Ryan Ross, checking his safety buckles.

A bulldog-necked tour guide delivers some last-minute instructions. “If the car rolls over, do not put your arms outside the vehicle,” he warns. “You will suffer an injury. Apart from that, it’s 10,000 acres of fun!”

The 21-year-old Ross shrinks into his seat and sighs fearfully. In the adjacent cart, perennially animated singer Brendon Urie is whooping with glee. With his fighter-pilot goggles, flight jacket and scarf, he resembles a particularly hyperactive Biggles.

“Thank you, Jesus, for desert!” he screams, excitedly air drumming on the steering wheel. Urie squeezes the accelerator pedal, sending the sand beneath his wheels into the air. Worryingly, [this journalist] is sitting in the passenger seat next to him.

As the cars set out across the dunes, some breakneck steering propels Urie into the lead. Drummer Spencer Smith and bassist Jon Walker cruise behind. In the distance, Ross brings up the rear. “What do you expect?” shouts Urie. “He drives a Mercedes-Benz.”

With another shunt of the pedals, Urie flies over a hill and towards an immovable boulder. A quick spin of the wheel sets him on a collision course with a fearsome-looking bush. Rather than attempting an evasive manoeuvre, he crashes through the foliage and burns triumphantly towards the finish line. [This journalist] feels unwell.

“Wow, that was sick,” he laughs, his face now smothered in dust. “See, there’s more to Vegas than drinking, gambling, and boobies. I’ve got sand in orifices I didn’t even know existed.”
