Holistic nutrition makes a point to study not just the foods we are eating, but a personâs mental health as well. We all know how periods in our life marked by stress, anxiety, fear, or any number of other negative emotions can be hard for our minds to handle. Not only can negative emotions cause this, but lack of sleep as well. A lack of sleep is hard on a body by itself, but when coupled with the negative emotions that are often associated with those in need of sleep, it can be disastrous. The link between sleep and our mood creates a vicious cycle, as negative feelings can cause lack of sleep, which can in turn cause negative feelings. Our bodies are also struggling to keep up during these times. Have you ever gotten sick after having a week or two of running around, trying to keep up, and feeling stressed and anxious? There are many stories as well of a personâs mental status determining their health. There are people in the hospital that should be doing alright, but have checked out mentally, and their bodies soon follow. We have also heard stories (although rare) about meditation alleviating symptoms in cancer patients, along with those suffering from other diseases. Some people even believe that cancer is caused by physiological stress over a long period of time. Though our bodies have a stress response for a reason, it was not designed to continue for long periods. âAccording to the American Psychological Associationâs latest stress survey, 66 percent of people regularly experience physical symptoms of stress, and 63 percent experience psychological symptoms.â
These are all examples of our environment, mental state, or a combination of the two can cause adverse health effects. Americanâs are known for our fast-paced lifestyles, and these normally lead to the stress we should be avoiding. If we can understand this, maybe we can work toward discovering which things in our environment or our thoughts can help us to maintain or increase our health. As future professionals in the field of nutrition, it is a good idea to keep our minds open to more than the diet of our patients/clients. If we can take into account their environment and mental state, along with diet, we are more able to help them in leading healthier lifestyles. If this isnât what weâre working toward, what is?
